In line with the Breastfeeding Month Celebration 2014 with the theme “BREASTFEEDING: A WINNING GOAL FOR LIFE” National Nutrition Council Regional Office 9 together with Zamboanga City Breastfeeding Multi-Sectoral Monitoring Council and Zamboanga City Health Office Celebrate Breastfeeding Awareness Month last 8 August 2014 at Plaza Del Pilar Zamboanga City.
Key personalities present during the launching were Dr. Rodelin M. Agbulos the City Health Officer and City Nutrition Action officer of Zamboanga who gave his warm welcome to all the visitors, Vice Mayor of Zamboanga City Hon. Cesar S. Ituralde who delivered the message from the Hon. Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco and Congresswoman Lilia M. Nuño the Author of the local ordinance on Breastfeeding who also gave her message and support on Breastfeeding in Zamboanga City.

The National Nutrition Council together with the Regional Nutrition and Anti-Hunger Committee successfully conducted the Stakeholders’ Forum with Media Partners on July 25, 2014 and July 28, 2014 respectively. The activity was conducted in observance to the nationwide celebration of Nutrition Month with the theme “Kalamidad Paghandaan: Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan!” to create awareness among the general populace, stakeholders and partners on the importance of preparedness, how to respond and what measures to be undertaken when disasters and emergencies strike.
Almost two hundred participants were in attendance in separate venues that include Nutrition Action Officers, Stakeholders, Regional Nutrition and Anti-Hunger Committee members, Academe, NGO’s, officials of the top twelve coastal barangays and Media partners. Key personalities were invited as Resource Persons like OIC RD of PHILVOLCS IX Engr. Allan Rommel Labayog, OIC RD of Civil Defense Mr.Jose Eric Castillo, Chief Meteorologist of PAGASA Miss. Maribel Enriquez, Disaster Focal Person of DILG Miss Teresita Catalbas, Regional HEMS Coordinator Dr. Marcos Redoble, City Health Officer & CNAO Dr. Rodelin Agbulos, Medical Officer IV Dr. Sharon Francisco-Maliksi from City Health Office and the City Social Welfare Development Officer Miss Ma. Socorro Rojas. Each speaker shared their expertise and experiences with regards to risk reduction management and how Zamboanga City managed and respond to the situation using the cluster approach.

The National Nutrition Council Regional Office 09 had initiated the training of IYCF Peer Counsellors in selected barangays in the region. From January of this year 2014 at least 108 mothers from seven barangays in the cities of Dipolog, Pagadian, Isabela and the municipality of Diplahan in Zamboanga Sibugay were given the basic knowledge and skills on counselling other mothers in their communities, especially new mothers, on the appropriate Infant and Young child Feeding (IYCF) practices.
The Peer Counsellors will be promoting of the IYCF practices primarily to mothers with infants and children below two years old to encourage them to practice Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF) from birth of the infant until six months old and to start timely and adequate complementary feeding from six months onward with continued breastfeeding until two years of age and beyond. This practice on IYCF as espoused by the World Health Organization and as adopted policy of the Department of Health is proven to be the most effective intervention to reduce child mortality and malnutrition.

The National Nutrition Council Region 9 in partnership with the Department of Health Region 9 successfully conducted an Information Caravan on Nutrition in Emergencies (NIE) in the provinces of Zamboanga Del Sur, Zamboanga Del Norte and Zamboanga Sibugay on July 8-10, 2014 respectively. A total of 150 Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs) and members of the Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC) were in attendance. The activity was conducted relative to the 40th nationwide celebration of Nutrition Month with the theme “Kalamidad Paghandaan: Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan!” (Prepare for emergencies to prevent hunger and malnutrition). The activity aims to create awareness among the general populace on the importance of preparedness during emergencies, how to respond and think of what recovery measures can be done to prevent death and worsening of malnutrition of the affected population.

National Nutrition Council in partnership with SKY Cable Zamboanga and its Local Telemagazine--VEZTV“Vale El Zamboanga” and the City Nutrition Committee of Zamboanga held a fun run dubbed as ONE RUN:”Flag, Nation and Nutrition”.
The ONE RUN held in 15 December 2013 was open to the public and gathered over a thousand running enthusiasts from children to adults, private individuals, students, government and NGOs among others. The crowd filled up the grounds of the Paseo del Mar where run had its jump start and finished. A ceremonial run by the event organizers’ officials bearing the flag of the Philippines opened the Run that had three categories -- 6 km, 3 km and kiddie run at the Paseo del Mar with 5 minutes interval for each category. The crowd of running enthusiasts coming from different sectors and groups was perfect for the launching of the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos which was done during the assembly, NGF leaflets were distributed for their personal copies, the NGF billboards in three languages were posted all around the stage area while the locally produced NGF Video plugs were shown in the big screen during the assembly.ue for the National Nutrition Council to launch and introduce to the public the 2012 revised Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos and for the City Nutrition Committee of Zamboanga City to raise funds for the Nutrition on Wheels Project and to support the Supplemental Feeding program of undernourished children in the City. The run also encouraged people to be physically active and was an occasion for Zamboangueños to unite and participate in the recovery efforts of Zamboanga City after the armed crisis and flooding in September and October.Nation and Nutrition.

The National Nutrition Council Regional Office 9 together with the members of the Regional Nutrition Committee joined the city of Zamboanga on the Launching of the 40thNutrition Month Celebration. The activity started with a motorcade around the city proper and ended up to the west coast Barangay Tulungatung, one of the transitory sites where evacuees of the Zamboanga siege were transferred.
Key personalities were present during the launching of the nutrition month. Congress Woman Lilia M. Nuño and Mayor Isabelle “Beng” Climaco gave their message. Present also during the activity were Dr. Rodelin M. Agbulos, City Health Officer and City Nutrition Action Officer, Hon. Ester F. Del Rosario Barangay Chairperson, Dr. Ruth Yanga of Department of Education, other organization like Nutritionist-Dietitian’s Association of the Philippines (NDAP) and the Academe. Several activities were conducted like the launching of the 6 months dairy milk feeding for 300 school children IDP’s in Barangay Tulungatung and awarding of the graduates of Severely Acute Malnourished (SAM) and Moderately Acute Malnourished (MAM) Children.
