Cebu City – Despite the bad weather, five hundred (500) delegates participated in the Nutrition Month 2014 Launching activities last 01 July 2014. NNC 7 led by RNPC Parolita A. Mission in collaboration with the Cebu City Nutrition Council chaired by Mayor of Cebu City, Hon. Michael A. Rama, a series of activities were done to officially open the month’s celebration. In line with the theme, “Kalamidad paghandaan: Gutom at malnutrisyon agapan!”, the activities planned out aimed to focus on informing the public about Nutrition in Emergencies.
The day’s celebration was started off with a parade dubbed “Walk for NiE”, a total of one hundred fifty (150) delegates participated in the walk which started from Plaza Independencia, Cebu City to Plaza Sugbo fronting Cebu City Hall.
Following the Walk, a Mass was held to ask the intercession of the Holy Father for the month-long celebration. The mass was celebrated by Mon. Ruben Labajo.
Highlighting the day’s kickoff activities was the Nutrition in Emergencies (NiE) Exhibit. Following the mass, a short ribbon-cutting program followed. Gracing the program was Cebu City Vice-Mayor Edgardo Labella, Cebu City Health Officer Dr. Daisy Villa and NPC Parolita A. Missionm, who delivered speeches and then proceeded to the ribbon cutting ceremony to formally open the NiE exhibit. The Exhibit showcased food-based interventions, nutrition assessment, IYCF in Emergencies, micronutrient supplementation, nutrition information and communication education. Booths were manned by different organizations and institutions such as the Office of Civil Defense, Nutrition Center of the Philippines, Feed the Children Philippines, Cebu Normal University, Cebu Doctors University and University of San Carlos. The Exhibit ran for three (3) days from 01 to 03 July 2014.
With visitors coming to the Exhibit, it was foreseen that the residents of Cebu City and Region VII through the different media outlets would be informed and be equipped to act responsibly during emergencies. //DFB

Bohol Province – Ms. Josephine A. Caduyag, the Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) of Barangay Matin-ao, Sierra Bullones, Bohol bested all the BNS nominees from the different provinces and cities of Central Visayas.
Ms. Jospehine A. Caduyag, “Josie” for short, started working as a BNS last 2006. Believing that the family is an important unit of society, her endeavours as a BNS in the community is centered in ensuring that all members of the family get quality health and nutrition services. Doubling also as a Barangay Health Worker, aside from the regular monitoring activities, she initiates the annual Pabasa sa Nutrisyon in all the puroks in the barangay.
Together with the BNC, Josie actively monitors and gives assistance to all the puroks consequently one of the puroks has been declared Outstanding Purok last March 2013. Constant advocacy of IYCF practices and ensuring that families are food secured is her formula for a winning purok.
A BNS is a volunteer community worker who is trained in implementing health and nutrition programs in a locality. Major tasks of a BNS include: to determine the nutrition status of young children through Operation Timbang, formulate action plans with the Barangay Nutrition Council, referrals of malnourished women and children, Gulayan sa Paaralan projects, deworming and immunization of preschool children, distribution of multivitamins, backyard food production and environmental sanitation to name a few.
Together with the City Outstanding BNSs, Ms. Sofia N. Rosatas of Canlaon City and Ms. Lucia A. Flores of Dumaguete City, Ms. Caduyag, will be receiving trophies along a cash prizes on August 8, 2014 during the Grand Nutrition Awards that will be done at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino, Salinas Dr, Cebu City, Cebu City.

Cebu City – The City of Cebu and the province of Bohol together with the municipalities of Batuan and Lila were recognized for their Good Nutrition Practices and Projects during the recent Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held last 08 August 2014 at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, Cebu City.
Bohol Province with their “Purok System Nutrition Initiative”, which aims to bring nutrition services close to the grassroots, raised the bar of nutrition program management by giving purok officials the responsibility to manage the purok’s nutritional status. Overall, the project has contributed to Bohol province’ goal of reducing under nutrition, with its decline from 6.26% in 2011 to 5.29 in 2013.
Cebu City with their “Collaborative Efforts in Addressing School Children Malnutrition” serves as an impetus for a collective effort of the different member-agencies of the Cebu City Nutrition Committee and various non-government organizations operating in the City. Implemented in all elementary schools of the City, the daily feeding program provides nutritious lunch for all of wasted and severely wasted school children by providing the schools with food stuff needed by the kids. Only on its third year, the program was able to able to rehabilitate 68.9% of the children targeted.

Cebu City – The municipality of Pamplona, Negros Oriental is awarded the Outstanding Municipality of the Region for 2014. Besting other municipalities in the region, this is its second year to receive the Green Banner Award, as it was awarded Outstanding Municipality in the Province in 2013.
Resulting from the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team deliberation meeting on 15 July 2014, where members validated scores from the 2014 Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI), Pamplona garnered a 90.99% score overall basing on the program efficiency and program effectiveness along Home, School and Community Food Production, Micronutrient Supplementation, Food Fortification, Food Assistance, Nutrition Education, Nutrition in Essential Maternal and Child Health Services, Livelihood Assistance and Program Management.
The municipality of Carmen in the Bohol Province came a close second is awarded the Oustanding Municipality in the Province of Bohol.
Clearly deserving of the awards, these municipalities, represented by their mayors, will be receiving their plaques and green banner awards on on August 8, 2014 during the Grand Nutrition Awards that will be done at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino, Salinas Dr, Cebu City, Cebu City. FINAL-BREAD-TABLET-cebuanoCanlaon City – To further the push for good nutrition and healthy lifestyle campaign in the region, the National Nutrition Council 7 produced a Cebuano version of the 10 Ten Kumainments and launched the promotion during the 10th Regional Barangay Nutrition Scholars’ Congress last 06 November 2013 at the Canlaon Cultural and Sports Center, Canlaon City, attended by more than 1,000 participants.
Dr. Parolita A. Mission, NNC 7 Nutrition Program Coordinator together with Hon. Jimmy Jayme L. Clerigo, Mayor of Canlaon City, officially unveiled the life sized tarpaulin of Mang Moi carrying the Cebuano version of the 10 Kumainments. The 10 Kumainments are the popularized version of the 10 Nutrition Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF) that was approved by the NNC Governing Board to promote a healthy lifestyle among Filipinos. Mang Moi, a campaign character Moises Dalisay was patterned after Moises of the bible who handed down the 10 Kumainments for the people to follow.

Cebu City – The nutrition community in Central Visayas once again recognized exemplary Local Government Units (LGUs) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) during the recent Grand Nutrition Awards 2014 held on 08 August 2014 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, Cebu City.
Besting the other contenders, the municipality of Pamplona, Negros Oriental won as Outstanding Municipality in the Region for their 2013 performance. With the strategy of “Working together for a healthier Pamplona”, the Municipal Nutrition Committee and all members of the community have have collaborated on various programs and activities to address the malnutrition situation of the municipality which ultimately has helped the municipality in being recognized. Additionally, the municipality also won Outstanding Municipality in Negros Oriental Province for this year, which they also won last year, 2013. They received a Green Banner Award which speaks of the outstanding performance achieved by the local government unit (municipality, city, province) in its quest for nutrition improvement. The award is given to the first ranking municipality in a province, and the first ranking province/ city/municipality in the region in recognition of efficient implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition.
