NPC Mission briefs to USC ND PracticumersCebu City – Some 18 students will be deployed in Mandaue City barangays after they were given orientation on the nutrition program.

The orientation was given by Dr. Parolita A. Mission, Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC 7 to Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics students of the University of San Carlos last 10 February 2014 at the Narra Conference Room, DOH – CHD 7, Cebu City.

To equip the students field exposures at the barangay level, the orientation focused on the background of the National Nutrition Council, the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, Nutrition Program Planning and Management and the Barangay Nutrition Committee. The objectives were to broaden knowledge of students in gathering data as basis of their nutrition assessments; to better understand the framework for nutrition planning; to define nutrition program management; and, to explain the relevance of understanding nutrition program management to the roles and functions of Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC).

Bantayan Island Nutriiton Committee Chairs get oriented on NiEBantayan Is., Cebu - So that local chief executives are equipped with real time emergency capabilities, NNC 7 organized a consultative meeting with local chief executives, municipal nutrition action officers, municipal nutrition program coordinators and other nutrition stakeholders for Yolanda-affected municipalities on 13 February 2013 at the Municipal Trial Court Conference room, Bantayan, Cebu.

In attendance were fifteen (15) individuals from the three municipalities of Bantayan Island namely, Bantayan, Santa Fe and Madridejos. The objective of the meeting was to to engage LCEs and nutrition stakeholders in planning and implementing nutrition rehabilitation efforts in Yolanda-affected municipalities; and, to agree on mechanism of coordination by the local government and regional line agencies with nutrition programs.

Discussed during the meeting was an introduction to Nutrition in Emergencies, Updates from the Local Nutrition Cluster, Nutrition Strategic Response Plan, Review of the Reporting System and Community Nutrition Response Strategy. Highlighted during the meeting were key interventions that would require support from the Barangay Nutrition Scholars/Barangay Health Workers and Municipal Nutrition Action Officers which encompassed of Infant and Young Child Feeding (setting up support groups, one-on-one counseling, mother/baby friendly spaces), MUAC screening and referral to CMAM, support the achievement of high coverage for Vitamin A supplementation and deworming and Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation.

Local government units may have to rationalize governance styles to include the nutrition agenda.

Concerns about low honorarium and politicized treatment of barangay nutrition scholars were raised during a meeting among presidents barangay nutrition workers of Cebu Province held last February 26. Another meeting among Presidents of nutrition scholars of the region was held on February 27.

DNPC Julieta talks about IYCF counselling at the IYCF Refresher TrainingTagbilaran City -- Targeting the recent earthquake’s hardest hit areas, NNC 7 conducts the 3rd and 4th batches of the IYCF Refresher Courses with Gender Concerns after its postponement due to the Bohol earthquake . The refresher courses were held on 10-12 February and 13-15 February respectively at the Reyna’s the Haven, and Garden Hotel and Restaurant.

The training is a kick-off activity of the Bohol Provincial Nutrition Committee as it resumes its normal nutrition program activities in addition to the on-going relief and rehabilitation activities.

Closing said training series, as the last two batches to be conducted in Central Visayas, participants and facilitators gave special attention to the earthquake rehabilitation plans in the issues and concerns they have raised during the event. Such concerns included the increased Global Acute Malnutrition rates (11.8%) recently reported in the area as well as the possible influences of support groups in the rehabilitation of these GAM cases.

Canlaon Cabbage Plantation for Malnourished FamiliesCanlaon City – The City Nutrition Committee of Canlaon, province of Negros Oriental pushed cabbage planting among families with malnourished children in the city. Canlaon City is known to be the summer capital of the Visayas, also famous for vegetable basket. Vegetable Production is one of the sources of income for farmers in the place. Low income and families with underweight kids were given assistance in the form of seeds, planting materials and technical assistance so they can start their cabbage production.

        For a farmer who is lucky enough planting one hectare of cabbage seeds, will yield and have a net income for three times harvest for two months duration is Php 120.000.00 or more. Expenses for planting until harvest time is Thirty Thousand (30,000) to Thirty Five Thousand (35,000) per hectare.

RNC Full Committee Meeting Review Strat PlanCebu City – Taking into consideration the calamities that have rocked and swept the islands of Region 7 recently, the Central Visayas Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) approved target adjustments in the updated Regional Nutrition Strategic Plan (RNSP) last 20 February 2014 during the 1st Semester RNC Full Committee Meeting held at Club Ultima, Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City.

The RNSP 2012-2016 is a plan document which provides for specific strategies and actions of the RNC member agencies and local government units consistent with the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2011 – 2016. The plan is also anchored in the Social Development Chapter of the Philippine Development Plan 2011-2016 and the Millennium Development Goal 1 of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger.

Presided by Mrs. Elizabeth P. Tabasa representing RNC Chair, DOH Regional Director Jaime S. Bernadas, with RNC Secretary and NNC 7 NPC Parolita A. Mission and the thirteen attendees composed of representatives from the different national line agencies, the group discussed the hurdles and the appropriate actions with the change of targets for the year.
