ASec Tayag at the 9th NAO CongressCebu City – “We should walk, what we talk.” The closing line of the keynote speech of Assistant Secretary of Health Enrique A. Tayag during the 9th Regional Nutrition Action Officers’ Congress and Grand Nutrition Awards held on 02 August 2013 at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel, Cebu City.

A/Sec Tayag talked about the Roles of Nutrition Action Officers in hunger and malnutrition mitigation. He underscored the importance of key local interventions, actions and policies to curb malnutrition, the promotion of Kalusugang Pangkalahatan (Universal Health Care) and their contribution in achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Tutor with her stakeholder promiseCebu City – Twenty five participants coming from the cities and provinces of Region VII, regional line agencies, non-government organizations and the media signified support in the promotion of the new Nutrition Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF) through a ceremonial putting of a personal pledge in the Oath to Health wall during the closing ceremony of the Roadmap to Healthy Filipinos: NGF 2012 Communication Planning Workshop held on 07 - 08 August at the Wellcome Hotel, Molave St. Cebu City.

The Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) initiated the revision of the 2000 NGF to keep up with the changes in the nutrition situation in the country as well as new information on nutrition and related interventions to address nutrition and related health problems. The NNC Governing Board approved the revised 2012 NGF in October 2012. The NGF consists of 10 messages that include both food-based and behaviour-driven guidelines that address current nutritional and dietary concerns. 

Dr. Parolita A. Mission, Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC 7 shared that NNC 7 spearheads the formulation of the “Roadmap to Healthy Filipinos: NGF Communication and Promotion Plan” to ensure the widest dissemination and use of the 2012 NGF. 

NNC 7 and NNC 8 take a group photo for team buildingBiri Island, Northern Samar – With the weather seemingly encouraging the group to continue the team building, NNC Region 7 and Region 8 travelled land and water to reach Biri Island, Northern Samar to have the 3rd Visayas Cluster Team Building on 26-28 September 2013.

Despite Region 6 unable to join the team building, the fourteen (14) NNC staff members coming from NNC Region 7 and Region 8 participated in the team building activities which were a mixture of structured and un-structured activities. Professor Faustito Amador Aure, Vice-Chair of the Region 8 RNC – TWG and also the VP for Community Extension and Research at Eastern Visayas State University facilitated the activities.

The activity’s main objective is to strengthen the bond between and among the staff in the region, and the Visayas cluster and establishing a work support group to improve productivity and enhance nutrition service for the people of the Visayas region.

Mothers attend BF Congress 2013Cebu City – Maintaining and strengthening its linkages with private institutions, NNC 7 co-organizedwith SM City Cebu and Cebu City Nutrition Committee the National Breastfeeding Awareness Month Culmination Activityon29 August 2013 at SM City Cebu.

More than one hundred pregnant or breastfeeding mothers from select barangays of Cebu City together with their respective city nutrition scholars attended the program. Starting with a Breastfeeding Rally at the lower ground floor of SM City Cebu and finishing at the Event Center, the culmination activity aimed to educate the mothers and mall-goers about the benefits of breastfeeding and the advantages that a mother, the child, the family and the community can get from breastfeeding. 

Ms. Mary Ann Alcordo–Solomon, Board Secretary and Health Committee Chair of Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) gave an inspirational message.  She shared the efforts of CCCI to encourage companies to set-up breastfeeding stations in their workplaces. She also emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive attitude toward life. NPC Parolita A. Mission of NNC 7 in her message underscored this year’s theme “Let’s bring breastfeeding closer to mothers!” She said that even when mothers are able to get off to a good start in exclusive breastfeeding, all too often in the weeks or months after delivery there is a sharp decline in breastfeeding rates and practices. Hence the need of community support for mothers is essential and her circles of support comes from the family and social network, healthcare, workplace, government/legislation and response to crisis or emergency, all surrounding women.

Cebu BNS SummitMandaue City, Cebu – The Cebu Provincial Barangay Nutrition Scholars Association (CPBNSA) organized the 1stCebu

Provincial Barangay Nutrition Scholars Association Summit last 27 September 2013 at the Cebu International Convention Center, Mandaue City. The event was attended by close to 1,000 Barangay Nutrition

Scholars representing the 1,203 barangays of Cebu province.

With the theme “BNS; Pag-Abag Mo, Kalusugan Ko!”, the summit aims to emphasize the contribution of the BNSs in the nutritional improvement of the Cebuano children and their importance in ensuring that the future generation would develop their optimal capacities starting in their pre-school age. The Municipal Nutrition Program Coordinators coming from 53 municipalities and cities of Cebu province also attended to lend their support.

 

NHA Evaluation Team gives feedback to Inabanga MayorBohol Province - The Regional Nutrition Evaluation team conducted a monitoring and evaluation of the Nutrition Honor Awardees (NHAs) of Region VII last 16-18 September 2013. The team led by Ms. Cheryl M. Dela Victoria of DA 7 with members Ms. Daphne Joyce B. Embradora of DSWD 7, Ms. ClarindaB. Paquibot of NCP 7 and Ms. Nasudi G. Soluta of NNC 7 visited the past NHA municipalities of Calape, Talibon and Inabanga to assess and evaluate the efficient and effective management and implementation of the municipal nutrition program. The municipalities should get a score of 95% in the evaluation to maintain their status as a Nutrition Honor Awardee. The team visited 5 barangays in both Calape and Inabanga and 4 barangays in Talibon.

Activities undertaken by the team included the review of the municipal nutrition committee records. The reports include the 2012 nutrition action plan, physical and financial accomplishment reports and related documents and looked into the nutritional status of the pre-school and school children, validation weighing of sample preschool children equivalent to 10% of the total preschool population or a maximum of 50. The team also visited barangay projects, i.e.   livelihood projects,  communal and demo gardens, waste management projects, as well as conducted interviews with the Mayor/Barangay Captain and nutrition committee members. The 3 LGUs have continuously implemented innovative programs and projects that contributed to the reduction of malnutrition in their areas, have strong advocacy to promote good nutrition, provided support to the maternal and health care program, and the showed political will in implementing related laws and policies toward the development of nutrition and health of their constituents. Findings were presented by the team to the different LCEs during the exit conference.
