Madridejos Health Workers first to be CMAM trainedMadridejos, Cebu – To empower the community of local health and nutrition workers of the municipality of Madridejos, the Nutrition Cluster led by UNICEF Surge Staff, Ms. Angela W. Kangori and DOH – CHD 7 Nutritionist-Dietitian IV, Ms. Julieta G. Tutor, RND facilitated the Training on Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) last 18 to 19 December, 2013 at Barangay Poblacion, Madridejos, Cebu.

The CMAM involves timely detection of severe acute malnutrition in the community and provision of treatment for those without medical complications with ready-to-use therapeutic food or other nutrient-dense food at home. If properly combined with a facility-based approach for those malnourished children with medical complications and implemented on a large scale, community-based management of severe acute malnutrition could prevent the deaths of hundreds of thousands of children. Severe acute malnutrition remains a major killer of children under ?ve years of age. Until recently, treatment has been restricted to facility-based approaches, greatly limiting its coverage and impact. New evidence suggests, however, that large numbers of children with severe acute malnutrition can be treated in their communities without being admitted to a health facility or a therapeutic feeding centre.

NNC 7 Staff plan for new yearSan Francisco, Cebu – With the different activities beckoning on the horizon for 2014, NNC 7 held its annual planning session last 08 to 09 January 2014 back to back with the 2013 Program Implementation Review at the Santiago Bay Garden and Resort, San Francisco, Cebu.

A review of the 2013 activities was made wherein the highs and lows of each activity were identified and how it contributed to the achievement of the major final output of NNC regional office and the over-arching goal of improving the nutritional status of the people in Region VII. The things discussed would be taken in to consideration in the 2014 activities.

After the review an extensive planning session followed. Planning is a crucial component of good management and governance. The process enables the team to look into the future in an orderly and systematic way. It provides a clear focus to the official and staff for program implementation and management of the regional office. It also provides an avenue wherein the activities that are deemed important are taken into account first with consideration of the existing workforce who can accomplish such tasks and finding alternative solutions to certain activities that need additional support. It provides a basis for monitoring progress, and for assessing results and impact.

Cebu City – Aiming to enable local government units to effectively and efficiently manage their local nutrition programs, the National Nutrition Council Region VII conducted one (1) batch of the Nutrition Program Management training for Cebu Province last 20 to 24 January 2014 at the Golden Valley Hotel, Cebu City. This was in addition to the two batches held last year.

NNC recognizes that the slow reduction in malnutrition and the persistent problem of hunger can be partly due to the insufficient abilities of local governments in nutrition assessment and in planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of nutrition programs. Because the problem of malnutrition and hunger is complex, the solution lies on the critical analysis of the nutrition situation at the local level and finding appropriate interventions that directly address the multi-factorial causation of malnutrition.

Around twenty (20) participants from the province of Cebu and Cebu City attended the four (4) day training. Participants of the training were composed of Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAOs), Municipal Nutrition Program Coordinators (MNPCs), Public Health Nurses, Rural Health Midwives and District Supervisors. Facilitating the training were Bohol Provincial Nutrition Program Coordinator Ms.Julieta B. Manliguez, Mandaue City Nutrition Program Coordinator Ms.Florita G. Olandria, NNC 7 NO III Ms. Susan Y. Orpilla and NO I Ms.Nasudi G. Soluta.

The training covered topics such as an overview of the millennium development goals, understanding food and nutrition, improving leadership skills, enhancing communication skills, honing advocacy abilities, planning skills, as well as, documentation and report writing.

After the end of the training, the participants were able to craft a one-year re-entry plan focused on the organization and/or the reorganization of their respective Municipal Nutrition Committees.

With the improved capacities of local government units to manage their nutrition programs, it is foreseen that Cebu’s prevalence of undernutrition which is 7.28% (OPT, 2013) will be further reduced. /DFB

Cebu City – NNC 7 is reminding the public to “Stay Hydrated” this coming 2014 Sinulog celebration. Dehydration is one of those conditions that one may not notice directly. Dehydration not only impairs one’s abilities, in certain cases it can be fatal.

Certain signs can be attributed to dehydration include feeling tired, sluggish and slow. It can also lead to fainting and difficulty in breathing in some people. With weather forecasts saying that it would be a sunny Sinulog and with walking being the only mode of getting from one place to another near the parade area, the public is reminded to drink water and carry with them a water bottle all the time. It is recommended that at least 2 liters of water be consumed on that day. On top of being hydrated, it is advised that Sinulog attendees eat a heavy breakfast to have enough energy to sustain in the morning and have an adequate meal during lunchtime to sustain the energy in the remaining hours of the day. Candies would also come handy to maintain glucose in the blood. Not only will one feel better, one will surely enjoy Sinulog better.

Don’t forget to drink water and Pit Senyor!

Knowledge ManagementCAMOTES ISLAND, CEBU -- Scaling up nutrition in 2014, the National Nutrition Council 7 is adopting and incorporating Knowledge Management as a major organizational strategy for all its activities this year. This was shared by Dr.Parolita A. Mission, Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC 7.

In a three-day assessment and planning session in Camotes Island, NNC 7 officers and staff members said that there is a need to look into the overall components of NNC 7 within the framework of systems thinking to be able to assess and maximize the intellectual capital within the organization, map out and knowledge management strategies and improve organizational and communication flow.

In management circles, Knowledge Management is a business process and an art of acquiring, assimilating, creating, capturing, retrieving, using and sharing knowledge and its outcomes to direct decisions and precipitate or create transformation. The management of information assets of an organization that may include databases, documents, policies, lessons learned and even un-captured expertise or knowledge in the minds of the staff that needs to be shared.

NNC 7’s Knowledge Management scheme will allow officers and staff to have load-balancing schemes, content and context management analysis in its external and internal communication and knowledge audit and knowledge sharing among its staff and agencies within NNC and its regional offices and line agencies. Knowledge management circles point out that the lack of knowledge exchange within and among regional offices illustrates weak knowledge management.

Knowledge management is the mark of a learningful organization. NNC 7 believes that to be able to share its Knowledge Management operational mantra, it must be able to harness and harvest its intellectual capital from within.
