flower plateFlowers have been part of the Filipino culture in festivals to courting and dating to home beautification to honoring of guests, but little did we know that there are flowers that are edible, nutritious, and medicinal.

Malnutrition in the Philippines is still a national problem. The 2015 FNRI survey reveals that the prevalence of underweight in the Philippines is 21.5%, stunting is 33.4% and wasting is 7.1%. The 2008 UNICEF framework for undernutrition shows that inadequate dietary intake/ household food insecurity is one of the immediate causes of malnutrition.

However, there are lots of food sources readily available around us that we usually waste away because we are unaware that they are edible and nutritious, like the flowers in your garden.

Here are the five (5) common flowers we grow in the Philippines with their nutritional value and common recipes:

samar 18MCatbalogan City, Samar-The Provincial Government of Samar through the active leadership of Governor Sharee Ann T. Tan in collaboration with the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process (OPAPP) the Department of Education (DepEd) came up with a holistic approach in addressing malnutrition among school children in the Province of Samar.

The project is entitled Parent Teacher Community Association (PTCA) Sustainable Organic Vegetable Production and Processing in Sixteen (16) Selected Public Schools with High Incidence of Malnutrition in Samar. The project aims to improve the nutritional status of wasted and severely wasted school children through the PTCA sustainable organic vegetable production and food processing to complement the School-Based Feeding Program of DepEd. The establishment of organic vegetable gardens will serve as the main source of food to complement the school’s supplementary feeding program. Likewise, these schools will serve as learning site which will showcase small-scale production models in schools that can be replicated at the household level and which will eventually provide food security for the family. Further, to provide the community with livelihood project, the proposal included the establishment of four (4) processing centers for the production of “vege chips” as substitute of junk foods at school canteens and even at the barangay stores.

NiEm san juan 4Introduction to basic concepts on Nutrition in Emergencies and planning workshop was conducted in the Municipality of San Juan, Southern Leyte on 4-6 April 2018 at the AVR, Southern Leyte State University-San Juan Campus.
Thirty-eight (38) participants completed the training implemented under the local government unit Bottom-Up Budgeting Health Emergencies Management System (BUB-HEMS). The training-workshop was aimed to come-up with a municipal nutrition plan which subsequently be incorporated in the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Plan. According to DRR-HEMS Coordinator through the Municipal Health Officer, Dr. Eliza R. Coraza, the training workshop is necessary as the municipality is one of the pacific coastal municipalities in the province. Likewise, terrorism and natural calamities may pose a threat in the municipality. Being ready to threats and disasters will reduce the casualty and will prepare the rural folks on the life line needed specifically food security.

Ready to collaborate and provide social services, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Philippine National Police (PNP) commit actions to be in one way with the government in reducing malnutrition in the region.

Nowadays, where does women’s rights stand? What are the differences of treatment and privileges for women before and today?

If we already have human rights for all, why is it important to talk about women’s rights? Women’s rights are significant because in the past, women were only limited to stay in the house, to serve and care for her family; she is not entitled to work and decide for her family. While today, the society and government has given women the right and privilege to make a living of her own; she can work and decide for her family including the right to have good nutrition and nutrition of her children.
