What is a keto diet? Is it good or bad for the body?

A keto diet or ketogenic diet is a 70-80% high-fat diet with moderate protein intake, according to an article published on the website of Harvard University School of Public Health. It was originally designed for children with epilepsy to prevent seizures. With this diet, the body is deprived of glucose from carbohydrate foods and replaced by “ketones” from stored fat in the body. When ketones accumulate in the blood this is called a state of “ketosis”.

Too much ketones in the body can increase acidity of the blood or ketoacidosis This can lead to serious health consequences especially if practiced extensively. Some side effects include increased risk of kidney stones and osteoporosis, and increased blood levels of uric acid.

Keto diet should not be used without medical supervision because of serious health consequences.

Almost everybody knows exercise is good for the body, but not everyone likes to run, dance, lift weights or simply walk the extra mile.

Although the health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity are hard to ignore, many may have even tried changing routine but kept sliding back to old behaviors eventually. Exercise doesn’t need to be such an all or nothing commitment, as it can be a fun time to socialize with friends and working out with others can help keep you motivated. Committing to exercise for an hour a day in a gym may be too challenging for some, as compared to a 30-minute brisk walk three or four times a week.  If you have not exercised before or you’ve tried an exercise program in the past and was unable to stick with it, it’s important not to set unrealistic goals.

Once these short windows of activity become a habit and you start experiencing the benefits, it’s easier to progress to the next level.  Find an exercise that you enjoy doing, which could be as simple as a walk, or as unique as washing the clothes while mopping the floor.

Remember that if you hate what you are doing, you are far less likely to stay engaged.

In and around your homes, you can clean the house, wash the clothes, tend to the yard and garden, mow the lawn with a push mower, or sweep the sidewalk.

Many convenient food items flood the market but noodles have emerged as one of the most popular item. This is because noodles are tasty, affordable, easy to prepare, have longer shelf life and are good sources of energy.   With the rise of “on-the-go” eating, even noodles have transformed into a fastfood item similar to snacks like potato chips.

The Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) developed technologies on veggie noodles, like canton with squash, seaweeds and saluyot; miki with squash and seaweeds; and instant noodles with squash and saluyot in cups.  The DOST-FNRI’s research and development efforts on veggie noodles address vitamin and mineral deficiencies in the country through natural fortification with vegetables incorporated in the noodles.

Rice fortification technology is now more affordable for rice millers with the low-cost blending machine designed by the Department of Science and Technology’s Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) in partnership with HDN Technologies, an equipment fabricator.

This is in line with the Philippine Food Fortification Act of 2000 or RA 8976 which mandates rice fortification with iron to address the problem of anemia mostly due to iron deficiency anemia. About 11.1 % of the Filipino population is anemic according to the DOST-FNRI 2013 National Nutrition Survey.

The blending machine is a vital equipment used in rice fortification. It blends the iron rice premix with ordinary rice without damaging the grains and achieving uniformity even in higher capacity.
