vice govCABARROGUIS, Quirino – Vice Governor May Calaunan, provincial nutrition action officer (PNAO) on Budget and Legislation, has urged all employees of the provincial capitol and national government offices to give due attention to proper nutrition.

Speaking at the launching of the 2018 Nutrition Month at the provincial gymnasium recently, Calaunan told the employees to be models of nutrition by ensuring that their families get the correct amount of nutrients such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals that they need to maintain good health.

The lady vice governor has underscored the importance of vegetable gardens in every home as the main source of healthy and safe foods for the family.

Citing results of the previous Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) survey that named Quirino as one of the provinces in the Philippines with the lowest recorded average height, Calaunan said this is partly due to the lack of vegetable gardens in the homes as sources of healthy and nutritious food.

KalesaTUAO, Cagayan, - In its aim to advocate proper nutrition especially among schoolchildren in this town, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in Region 2 conducted one-of-a-kind nutri-kalesa painting contest on July 12.

Twenty teams composed of high school students competed in the nutri-kalesa painting contest with the theme "Ugaliing Magtanim, Wastong Nutrisyon ay Aanihin".

Emerging as champion are students from Itawes National Agricultural and Technical School (INATS) Bulagao campus with their masterpiece depicting the long term benefits of food gardening.

According the NNC, it was the first time in the history of the Nutri-Kalesa painting competition that a student with special needs successfully competed in the contest.

Nurition Officer John Nestor Ballad said the participation of 12th grader Albert Caguiao of the INATS Alabug campus, who despite special condition conceptualized his team’s design entry.

Frank Daguio, his coach, said Albert is really creative and passionate in doing arts. Though Albert’s team didn’t win, he vowed to perform better next competition.

Batang Radyo sa Nutrisyon Congress 2018Bearing this year’s nutrition month theme ‘Ugaliing magtanim, sapat na nutrisyon aanihin!’’ The Kiddie broadcasters here in Cagayan Valley once again took the center stage in the 6th Batang Radyo Sa Nutrisyon (BRSN) Congress held on 30 May 2018 at Palazzo Marceline Event Center and Café, City Road, Santiago City.

The active young 156 nutrition broadcasters in their colorful attire proudly registered their presence and participation.


Organized by the National Nutrition Council Region 02 in partnership with the Department of Education Region 02 and Local Government Units, the BRSN members were clustered in six groups as to the local government unit they represent. Armed with training, confidence and support from the LGUs, BRSN members once again showcased their talent and learnings through their active participation in the different activities during the congress.

Flores who led the National Evaluation Team of the NNC during the validation of the province in May this year recognized the strong support of the local government units of the province that paved the way for the sustained implementation of nutrition programs and activities.

She mentioned in a report that some of the best practices/programs of the province, which contributed to the province’s outstanding performance in nutrition are the "Search for Idol kong Pamilya," a program that recognizes poor families whose children have good nutritional status and regularly attend school, parents have no vices, absence of debt delinquencies and negative history of domestic violence.


chips-2BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, (PIA) -- The barangay nutrition workers in this province has come up with a ‘Nutri Snacks’ to encourage healthy eating among malnourished schoolers.

Produced by the Nueva Vizcaya Barangay Nutrition Scholars Federation (NVBNSF), the ‘Nutri-Snacks’ is made from banana, carrots, saluyot, malunggay, squash, taro, sweet potato and monggo/rice while some are even flavored with cheese.

NVBNSF members will be selling and distributing these ‘Nutri-Snacks’ to schools and to interested retailers. The group made the ‘Nutri Snacks’ using the funding assistance given earlier by the SN Aboitiz PowerMagat Inc. (SNAP-MAGAT) amounting to P600,000 as part of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program.

Dr. Edwin Galapon, provincial health officer, said the ‘Nutri Snacks’ is one of the interventions made by the nutrition workers to lower the malnutrition incidence in the province.

NNC R02 Balay ni IFAN Media Group shares best practices to CARMENu

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, June 18 - - Members of the Balay ni Ifan Media group here shared best practices in the advocacy and promotion of good nutrition with the members of the Cordillera Administrative Region Media Educators on Nutrition (CARMENu) recently.

The Ifan media, already on its ninth year of operation, is recognized as the first media organization on nutrition in the country, established by the National Nutrition Council (NNC), Region 02 in 2009 as part of the government’s accelerated hunger mitigation program.

Ma. Gisela Lonzaga, nutrition program coordinator, said the local media has been a great partner of the NNC in educating the public on the best ways to achieve good nutrition among family members, especially children.

“The group became a pillar of the NNC in improving the nutritional status of the region as members played significant roles in encouraging every family to sustain healthy living,” Lonzaga said.

During the benchmarking activity, Teresa Campos, member of the Balay ni Ifan, presented the evolution of the organization, its accomplishments and partnership initiatives with other organizations and local government units.

On the other hand, Marilou Guieb, president of CARMENu, appreciated the openness of the Ifan members in sharing ideas on how to ensure sustainability of the organization and good relationship among members.
