17 December 2013, Tuguegarao City- - The National Nutrition Council Region II staged its first Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF) Summit held at the Ninoy Aquino Hall, Pulsar Hotel, Tuguegarao City. Invited resource speakers were Ms. Evelyn Gamurot, National President of District/ City Nutrition Program Coordinators Association of the Philippines (DCNPCAP), Dr. Julie Ann Bingayan, and Municipal Nutrition Action Officer of Quezon, Nueva Vizcaya, and Ms. Nareta Maximo, City Nutrition Action Officer of Cauayan City, Isabela. The first ever NGF Summit convened the nutrition officers and district/ city/ municipal nutrition program coordinators in the Cagayan Valley region to build awareness on the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos and to encourage the Nutrition Officers/ Nutrition Program Coordinators as role models in practicing the guidelines.
Technical updates regarding the revised Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos and initiatives were given by Ms. Ma. Gisela M. Lonzaga and Ms. Benjielyne E. Estudillo, Nutrition Officers III and II of NNC RO2, respectively. Some of the invited resource speakers also shared their own NGF Initiatives which inspired the participants.

TUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN- Regional Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF-R02) warns the public with the increasing number of uniodized salt in nearby region as revealed by the inspection of Regional Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF) last June 9 at Ilocos Norte.
Strengthened RBATF headed by Ms. Rhodora Maestre, NPC of NNC R-02 and Mr. Alexander Michael Palma, Development Consultant of UNICEF together with its monitoring teams from the different government agencies and Local Government Units, organized the conduct of the said inspection.
RBATF discovered in a salt factory located at Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte the insufficient amount of iodine in the salt that they are producing. Based from the tests administered by RBATF, it revealed the salt products only contain 0.5ppm of iodine content which is lower than the prescribed 30ppm and above iodine content. According to reports, insufficiency of iodine in salt products can pose a health risk to a person which results to Iodine Deficiency Syndrome or IDS.

Lal-lo, Cagayan- The Municipality of Lal-lo, with the leadership of Mayor Florante C. Pascual, continuously maintains and promotes its health and nutrition programs and projects even after winning the National Honor Award.
For this year, two of the main activities of the Local Government Unit, in partnership with the Rural Improvement Club (RIC), headed by Board Member Maria Olivia B. Pascual, are the School Canteen Visit and the Citronella Planting and Propagation.
School Canteen Visit
Due to the alarming news on food poisoning in some parts of the country, Lal-lo deemed it necessary to repel the happening of the same in the town. As such, the RIC visited the school canteens around the town in order to ensure that every food product in the canteens is safe and nutritious for the children.
During the visit, the RIC checked the safekeeping and sanitary conditions of the canteens. They likewise checked the products and where they are coming from.
“If we want to invest the good future in the hands of our children, then we should start by feeding them only the right ones. More than the quality education our schools can provide, safe and nutritious food is even more important,” said BM Olive.

TUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN- National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region 2 participated in a double celebration of High Impact 5 sponsored by the Department of Health Regional Office 02 last June 18 and June 22 at Nueva Vizcaya and Tuguegarao City respectively.
The programs, under the UHC-HI-5, are geared towards reduction of maternal and infant death cases, improved under-five children, combat HIV and AIDS and establishment of functional service delivery network in all areas of the country High Impact 5 HI-5 was created to boost the implementation of said health programs in the provincial and municipal levels especially focusing on those under the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR).
Rhodora Maestre, Nutrition Program Coordinator, represented the agency in the Regional breakthrough celebration of the said activity. NPC Maestre together with different Nutrition expert and Nutrition related field of specialization were gathered in order to strengthen such affair. NPC Maestre praised the agency in coming up with this kind of endeavor that the main purpose is to alleviate the country’s health status that can directly help in combatting nutritional issue. The affair started with a caravan around the town proper of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya followed by a program that shared different thoughts and ideas that can help balancing the health status in the country.

TUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN- To address the increasing number of obesity in the country, the National Nutrition Council (NNC R-02) commenced its annual celebration of Nutrition Month this July first with a theme “Tamang timbang iwasto sa tamang nutrisyon at ehersisyo.”
As stated by the Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director Maria-Bernardita T. Flores, there is an increase of overweight cases among adults aged 20 years old and above which climbed up to 15.5 % from 1993 to 2013.
The National Nutrition Council R02 headed by their Nutrition Program Coordinator Rhodora Maestre, initiated a Zumba dance in their celebration of nutrition month as their response in addressing the pressing problem of obesity. Zumba Dance started at 8 o’clock in the morning at Department of Agriculture Gymnasium, Nursery Compound Bagay Road that lasted an hour.
Regional Directors from regional agencies including Cagayan Valley Association of Career Executives (CVACE) and Regional Nutrition Council together with their members participated in promoting this year’s nutrition month celebration theme. A total of 215 members of the agencies attended the said activity.

TUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN- The National Nutrition Council Region 02 through the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET), concluded its Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) for year 2015 with its visit in municipalities of Aparri and Lal-lo on July 2 and 3. This year’s MELLPI started last April in Batanes. The RNET led by the NNC Region 02 Nutrition Program Coordinator, Ms. Rhodora Maestre in collaboration with the interagency evaluation team has been roaming around the region to monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the local nutrition program implemented by the different local government units in the region.
This year composition of RNET were Chaired by Ms. Nerissa Mabbayad of the Department of Health (DOH), Co-Chaired by Ms. Nenita Yabis of the Department of Agriculture (DA), and its members were Mr. Dave Escalante from the Department of Interior Local Government (DILG), Ms. Delia De Guzman of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Ms. Arlene Tacuycuy of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource (BFAR), Mr. Richard Francisco of Department of Agrian Reform (DAR), and Ms. Edita Ubiña of Department of Education (DEPED). They evaluated cities of Cauayan and Ilagan in Isabela. Furthermore, municipalities in the province of Nueva Vizcaya, Batanes, Quirino and Cagayan were also visited by the team.
