ro2 coastal 2013To determine whether a child is growing normally or has growth problem, the National Nutrition Council Region 02 organized a training for Barangay Implemeters on WHO – Child Growth Standards which was attended by Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Rural Health Midwife and RN Heals.

The training course, is designed for health-care providers who measure and assess the growth of children or those who supervise these activities, so that implementation of the new growth standards will be accompanied by good measurement and plotting techniques.

Topics discussed during the one-day training included the Rationale for the Adoption of the WHO – Child Growth Standards in the Philippines composed of Measuring a Child’s Growth, the Interpretation of Growth, Counseling on Growth and Feeding, and the Weighing and Measuring of Children and an actual weighing of day-care children.

Ater the lecture proper, the participants went to an on-site practicum at the day-care center in Palanan.

ro2 nutri magazine 2013The National Nutrition Council Region 02 has significantly utilized the mass media in its information campaign to combat malnutrition and hunger. As a result, the NNC’s messages have been given exposure in the three formats of public information: print, radio and television. Thus, print media can only absorb a limited amount of articles considering the general information format of most community papers. A number of press releases and feature stories about the different activities of the NNC fail to see print due to editorial preferences of most local papers.

As part of it's linkaging and network building with local media and regional nutrition network, announced it's plan to launch an NNC-style gazette which aims to release information relating to nutrition, health, local current events, and other relevant facts.

The announcement was made by Nutrition Program Coordinator Rhodora G. Maestre during the 1st Quarter Regional Nutrition Committee meeting. Along with the event, the full-blown schematics and framework were discussed, and those present agreed upon the name “SPOON.”

Requirements:

- Graduate of a 4 –year bachelor’s degree course. Preferably allied health and nutrition related.

- At least one year related experience
• Prepare training modules and similar documents for training programs, foras workshops, orientations and similar activities in line with nutrition advocacy and human resource development

• Prepare materials for print and audio visual presentation in support of the program’s advocacy and human resource program

• Assist in the conduct of activities along nutrition advocacy and human resource development

• Document proceeding of meetings, trainings, and similar activities

• Prepare news, documentation report, feature articles of RNC and NNC 02 activities for release to nnc website and facebook page

• Collate, Consolidate and Analyze data submitted by the RNC members and LGU

• Coordinate and network with RNC members, Local Government units, media members and other partner stakeholders

Interested applicants can personally submit / send their application letter and resume to NNC Region 02 Office in 2nd floor Popcom building, beside Tuguegarao Post Office, Corner Bagay Road, San Gabriel Village, Tuguegarao City and look for Mr. Leendon Vilgera.

Deadline for submission will be on friday, June 28, 2013.

ro2 magna carta 2013The Regional Development Council 2 in its last quarter meeting held in this province, has moved to pass a resolution supporting the re-filing of House Bill No. 5365 or the Magna Carta for Barangay Nutrition Scholars aimed at providing security of tenure for BNSes regardless of political affiliation and benefits not provided by PD 1569.

The bill was introduced by Cong. Roger Gaviola Mercado of the lone district of Southern Leyte at the fifteenth Congress, second session on September 29, 2011 and it is still pending at the Committee on Health.

In the bill, a BNS after undergoing a training shall serve for three years in the barangay with a yearly evaluation after which he/she will be given a permanent position after two years of continuous satisfactory rating.

He/she can also avail of second grade civil service eligibility by filling proper application and meeting the requirements.

TUGUEGARAO CITY -- As an effort towards promotion of nutrition-related programs to ensure good health and nutrition of the people, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region 2 will conduct dialogue with the newly elected local chief executives (LCEs) regionwide.

Nutrition Program Coordinator Rhodora Maestre said that they need to explain intensively the programs on nutrition which the new LCES should list down as one of their priority agenda in his term of service.

Maestre said newly-elected officials ought to know that nutrition is vital towards the attainment of the communities’ development.

“There are lots of newly-elected mayors and one governor which we need to reach out to discuss the nutrition program so that they will understand how important the continuity of the nutrition programs in their areas,” said Maestre.

In line with the observance of Nutrition Month his July, NNC targeted four cities to conduct the dialogue with the LCEs, the cities of Tuguegarao, Santiago, Cauayan and Ilagan.

Maestre said the towns and provinces will have separate days for the advocacy campaigns until such time that they have penetrated all areas for the nutrition programs advocacy.

She is confident that the new LCEs will understand and embrace the programs on health and nutrition.

The National Nutrition Council Region 02 hand in hand with the Regional Nutrition Committee will open the 2013 Nutrition Month through the conduct of the "Goodbye Gutom and Malnutrisyon Caravan" and the "Nutri-kalesa Painting Contest." The commencement of these activities will take place on July 9, 2013.

In the caravan, RNC member agencies will set up their help desk stations in Ugac Sur Gymnasium as designated by the City Nutrition Committee of Tuguegarao. These helpdesks will serve as an information station on the services offered by the agency, and at the same time served as an action center for concerns regarding these services. The caravan intended to give couples listed under the National Household Targeting System direct access to government services in order to be provided assistance in order to augment their opportunities for income and employment, among others; thereby safeguarding their health, reducing hunger and malnutrition.

The caravan in Tuguegarao City will be the first of a series of drives to be held across the cities of Region 02. The caravan will follow with Ilagan City on July 10, Cauayan City on 11, and Santiago City on July 12.

In the Kalesa Painting Contest; 25 contestants will showcase their artistic talents in design by executing themes related to the 2012 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos to be painted on July 7 – 8, 2013. These contestants will each have one kalesa to paint whilst focusing on the theme: "Gutom at Malnutrisyon, Sama sama Nating Wakasan!" the same emphasizing the need to reduce hunger and malnutrition in the country.

The winning entries will take home 1,000.00, 2,000.00 and 3,000 for Third, second and first placers.
