r02 Batanes wins nutrition honor awards 2012BASCO, Batanes, Oct 23 (PIA) -- The governor announced here yesterday that Batanes won the 2012 Nutrition Honor Award (NHA), the highest award in the implementation of the nutrition program.

Governor Vicente S. Gato said, as per communication he received from Assistant Secretary Bernardita T. Flores, career executive service officer II and executive director-IV of the National Nutrition Council, Batanes won the 2012 NHA after it has been a consistent regional outstanding winner in nutrition awardee for three consecutive years, 2006-2009, as per evaluation of the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team.

r02 Cagayan Valley bags most number of national nutrition awards 2012TUGUEGARAO CITY, Nov. 15 (PIA) – Cagayan Valley Region is this year’s grand champion in nutrition after bringing home five major awards in the recently concluded 2012 National Nutrition Award held at the Philippine International Convention Center, graced by President Benigno Aquino III.

Batanes Province and Santiago City, Isabela are both Nutrition Honor Awardees (NHA), the highest national award in the exemplary and outstanding performance of the LGUs after nine years of maintaining satisfactory programs and projects on nutrition geared towards the eradication of malnutrition and institutionalization of programs to ensure good health and nutrition in the communities.

Lallo, Cagayan and Quirino province are also both Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) awardees while Victoria Gabbac of Dagupan, San Mateo, Isabela is the 6th placer as best Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) nationwide.

Rhodora Maestre, nutrition program coordinator, said the awards conferred to the Local Government Units of region 2 are manifestation of the serious commitment of the local officials and their partners towards eradication of malnutrition and institutionalization of programs to further people’s good nutrition.

“This is rare. We have been receiving national awards in different categories but it is our first time to receive five awards wherein four of them are major awards,” Maestre stated.

r02 NNC Region 02 conducts HAIN Post Disaster Project of Aglipay Quirino 2012December 13, 2012 – The National Nutrition Council Region 02 in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of Aglipay, Quirino was successfully implemented in the four targated Barangays the Integrated Action for Hunger Alleviation and Improved Nutrition (HAIN) Post Disaster Project, a post disaster project for the municipality of Aglipay, Quirino.

This was mainly due to the vulnerability of the area and the impact of the said typhoons to the former, wherein vast units of crops were destroyed which exacerbated the challenges that the locals were facing. HAIN project’s implementation aims to alleviate hunger and malnutrition and to provide temporary employment for a full recovery from their downfall during the typhoon. The cash/rice for work scheme was implemented for the municipality.

Beneficiary validation and orientation was initially executed by the Provincial Nutrition Committee of Quirino. With these finalized, the HAIN project launchings were held simultaneously in the different barangays in October 1, 2012, attended by MNC members headed by Hon. Jerry T. Agsalda, Municipal Mayor/MNC Chair together with Hon. Teresita DC. Quebral, Vice Mayor and other officials and MNC members.

r02 Cagayan Valley Region Nutrition implementers undergo training on Promote Good Nutrition 2012

Nurses and midwives of the Rural Health Units (RHUs) and nutrition officers of the province have undergone seven-day training on Promote Good Nutrition (PGN) at Baguio City last November 13-19, 2012.

Luningning Pacudan Rhodes, provincial nutrition officer, said the training included orientation on Infant and Young Child Feeding, Pabasa sa Nutrisyon, Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), and the promotion of eggs and vegetables.

The nutrition implementers were briefed on the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition for 2011 to 2016 which spells out how the country will reduce malnutrition under the Aquino administration.

The plan consists of priority nutrition actions at national and local levels that target families particularly mothers, infants and children who are most vulnerable to malnutrition.

The overview of the IYCF was also tackled to build capacities of local health workers and volunteers on counseling on IYCF and to organize community-based support groups in monitoring the strict enforcement of the Milk Code and to conduct nutrition classes on breastfeeding and complementary feeding.

r02 Feature Cagayan Valley The Nutrition Champion 2012Cagayan Valley region has been consistently bringing home pride and honor in receiving recognition from Malacañang in the annual National Nutrition Awarding, honoring the exemplary performances of different Local Government Unit (LGUs) in maintaining good nutrition status.

Since 1997, Region 2 has already received nine Nutrition Honor Awards (NHA). This is the highest award given to a Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) awardee in maintaining exemplary performance in nutrition for three consecutive years.

Rhodora G. Maestre, Nutrition Program Coordinator, said the awarding zeroes-in on the efficiency and effectiveness of nutrition program implementation. It also aims to encourage LGU officials to strive hard to achieve zero malnutrition rates within their areas, and to continue advocate and promote good nutrition.


In 1997, Solana, Cagayan was declared the first NHA awardee of region 2 followed by Echague, Isabela in 2000, Isabela province in 2002, Dupax del Sur, Nueva Vizcaya in 2003, Tuguegarao City- 2005, Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya- 2008, Cagayan province in 2009 and Santiago City and Batanes province in 2011.
The said NHA awardees were also CROWN awardees before they were conferred the highest award. For this time, the CROWN awardees namely: Mahatao, Batanes; Lallo Cagayan and Quirino province.
