TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – Expect more multi-colored, artistically designed and message-laden Kalesas to ply the secondary thoroughfares of this city as the National Nutrition Council Region 2 zeroed in on the public transport as a folk medium for its advocacy programs and projects.
This after the City Nutrition office of Tuguegarao city conducted the kalesa painting competition on nutrition messages participated by secondary schools in the city last July 20, 2012.
This year the kalesas were painted with vegetables as it relates with the theme Pagkain ng Gulay Ugaliin, Araw araw itong ihain.
“The Council believes in the power of the kalesa to promote good nutrition and health concerns as it is one of the more popular mode of transport in the city particularly in the barangays,” Maestre said.
With the total number of participating kalesas at 8 this year, that would make 43 kalesas now plying the streets of Tuguegarao, it was learned.
With print and broadcast saturated by the NNC in its information and education campaign, City Health Officer and City Nutrition Action officer Dr. James Guzman said it is just proper to utilize the kalesa not only to provide messages but likewise promote a cultural icon among the Ibanag of the City.

BASCO, Batanes -- Nutrition talking points, a supporting project of the provincial nutrition council (PNC) dubbed as nutri-uplift, has been aired at Radyo ng Bayan-Batanes since July 17 and ends today, July 31.
In the one-hour radio program held every morning in the said duration, the listening public is informed of the objectives of nutrition month celebration, importance of vegetables to the body, the nutrients derived from vegetables, what a healthy diet is, the comparison of organically grown vegetables and the traditionally grown, how to encourage children to eat vegaetables; and common questions about vegetables, like the technologies in vegetable gardening, factors or reasons for low consumption of vegetables.
Provincial nutrition action officer Roel Nicolas said the daily radio program aims to inform every citizen of the significance of good nutrition.
"The more often the information is aired, the more listeners are reached including the senior citizens," Nicolas said.
Among the PNC members who have disseminated facts on nutrition are DWBT-Radyo ng Bayan-Batanes, Provincial Health Office, Department of Health, Department of Agrarian Reform, National Statistics Office, Provincial Social Welfare Development Office, Provincial Agriculturist Office, and Department of Agriculture, and the Philippine Information Agency. Tuguegarao City--- The National Nutrition Council Region 02, through the initiative of Dr. James C. Guzman, City Nutrition Action Officer and Ms. Amy Calubaquib, City Nutrition Officer, conducted a follow-up training regarding the situation of OPT in the City and the province of Cagayan.
The training was held last August (31), 2012 in the City Health Office with the Barangay Nutrition Scholars attending the morning session, and the City midwives attending the afternoon session. The activities included an orientation on the Implememing Guidlines on OPT, Maintenance, Verification and Fabrication of Height boards and forum on the condition of the requests regarding height boards intended to be procured by the City.
The participants also underwent a “crash-course” on the use of computerized data based management tools.

TUGUEGARAO CITY, The National Nutrition Council 2 (NNC) in partnership with City Nutrition Committee of Tuguegarao and Philippine Broadcasting Services – DWPE Radyo ng Bayan launched August 17, 2012 a daily 30- minute Nutrition School on the Air program dubbed “Paaralang Panghimpapawid.”
NNC Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Rhodora G. Maestre said the Nutrition School on the Air aimed to bring across messages on good nutrition and efforts of the government to address hunger and malnutrition to the general public.
“The Nutrition School on the Air has three batches of classes and PBS and NNC piloted Tuguegarao City its first batch of class,” Maestre added.
The radio program has 20 lessons which will be aired from August 14 to September 2012, every 11:00 – 11:30 am, at DWPE Radyo ng Bayan hosted by Mercy B. Quinan while Vivian de Guzman is in charge of the overall NSOA operations.
Enrollees are the barangay nutrition scholars (BNS) with their 4 recruits from the community and initially, there were a total of 170 enrollees from different barangays here.

TUGUEGARAO CITY -- Some government employees have participated in a bloodletting activity today, organized by the Cagayan Valley-Association of Career Executives (CV-ACE) as part of the Civil Service Month celebration.
Avelino Marallag, Commission on Population regional director and chair-committee on health and wellness, said a hundred of employees from different agencies have confirmed their participation in the said activity to meet the demand of blood units in hospitals.
“This effort is not just for CV-ACE members neither to the government employees but for the patients across sectors as we show our social responsibility as public servant to those who need blood transfusion,” Marallag said.
He also encouraged capable blood donor employees to donate blood and make it a habit and commitment to help prolong other people's lives.
During the bloodletting activity, medical technologists and nurses from the Cagayan Valley Blood Service explained first to donors the benefits of donating blood regularly, as well as the criteria/requirements for donating blood.

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region 2 launched the “Batang Radyo sa Nutrisyon” program, August 24, 2012 at DWRL 95.1 FM in partnership with the Municipal Nutrition Committee of Lal-lo and Sangguniang Panlalawigan Board Member Maria Olivia B. Pascual.
The program is aimed to enhance school children’s skills in broadcasting towards the promotion of good nutrition.
31 school children, aged 6 to 12, were selected from different elementary schools and divided into three; they will take alternate schedules in going on-air. Each team is composed of an anchor, co-anchor, and five reporters. The "Batang Radyo" is aired every Saturday 7:00 – 8:00 am.
