With the help of its partner agencies, the National Nutrition Council Region 02 (NNC) crafted a regional communication plan for the massive promotion of the 2012 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF) in Cagayan Valley.
This is in line with its goal to create a “regional communication plan that would effectively and efficiently disseminate information regarding the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF).”
The two-day 2012 NGF Communication Plan Formulation Workshop on August 8 – 9, 2013 “Endeavors to protect and promote the nutrition of Filipinos by providing a solid foundation and starting point for nutrition workers in developing information, education and communication materials and in conducting educational and advocacy activities. This aims to keep up with the changes in the nutrition situation in the country as well as new information on nutrition and related interventions to address nutrition and related health problems.”
Rhodora G. Maestre, regional nutrition program coordinator, said that the NNC leads in promoting and ensuring the widest dissemination and use of the 2012 NGF.
The NNC has been spotlighting hunger as a critical issue in the problem of undernutrition and malnutrition.
The workshop was attended by NNC-2 key partners from Balay ni IFAN media group, Regional Nutrition Committee, Local Government Units represented by the Nutrition Action Officers who identified the various channels, strategies and avenues that NNC-2 can tap for the effective and efficient promotion of the 2012 NGF.
The goal of the NGF is the improvement of the nutritional status, productivity and quality of life of the population, through adoption of desirable dietary practices and healthy lifestyle. (BEE)

The Regional Sub - Committee for the Welfare of Children under the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional office and its partner agencies where National Nutrition Council Region 02 is a member agency set several activities to highlight the celebration of the National Children’s Month this coming October.
Lucia Alan, head of the Program Standard Unit of the department, said this year’s theme “Kahirapan Wakasan, Karapatan ng Bata Ipaglaban,” highlights that poverty reduction starts with children.
The celebration aims to encourage stakeholders to help reduce poverty and to advocate for stronger holistic actions, particularly preventive measures to address problems on poverty.
Among the activities identified is the conduct of press conference through he Philippine Information Agency’s (PIA) regular program “Tipon-Tipan sa PIA” to draw awareness among the populace on the significance of the celebration. Children leaders will also be invited to inspire other young children on their role to help fight poverty.

In support of the BNS program, the National Nutrition Council- Region II conducted the Training of Trainers on Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars at New Rajah Hotel in Baguio City last August 12-16, 2013. The 5-day training is directed for BNS’ trainers and supervisors to improve their capacity in supervising and mentoring one of the most critical human resource in delivering effective nutrition and related services, the BNSs.
District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators, City/ Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, Nutrition Officers, Nutritionist- Dietitians and Nutrition Staff/Desk Officers all over the Cagayan Valley region passionately participated the said training facilitated by Ms. Ma. Gisela Lonzaga and Ms. Arrian Nika Dumaliang, Nutrition Officer III & I of National Nutrition Council- Region II, respectively. Ms. Nancy Castro, Nutrition Officer III of Nueva Vizcaya and Ms. Magdalena Lara, Nutritionist- Dietitian III of Provincial Health Office- Cagayan was also present on the said training as resource speakers.
The training in a modular strategy became very productive through the lecture-discussions, group activities, exercises, role-plays, demonstrations, and presentations participated by the trainees with eagerness. Last day of the training was filled with happy and rewarded faces of supervisors and trainers taking along with them new knowledge, values and skills that will help them to inspire and mold the BNSs in becoming dedicated community workers and experts in nutrition.

This seems to be the message of Region 02 Nutrition Program Coordinator Rhodora G. Maestre of the National Nutrition Council as she delivered her opening essage in a two-day communication planning workshop held last September 10-11 at the Holiday Inn Clark Pampanga.
Speaking before some fifty nutrition officers from the seven provinces and fourteen cities of Region 03, and media practitioners of Pampanga, Maestre intimated that the Central Luzon Nutrition Community expects full support at putting more energy in promoting nutrition programs in her temporary leadership as NNC Region 03 Officer in Charge.
True to her words, a native kapampangan herself by birth, Maestre brought the powerhouse of her NNC Region 02 staff to help in the initial stage of activating NNC-local media friendship in Central Luzon.
Meanwhile, Broadcaster Ding Fugaban and Nutrition Officer Benjielyne Estudillo took turns in re-impressing the complan workshop participants on the various accomplishments of Balay Ni Ifan (House of Juan) Media Task Force, a built-in media core group of NNC Region 02.
Impressed by the outstanding achievements of Balay Ni Ifan, Veteran Broadcaster & Pampanga Press Club President Perry Pangan took the cudgel in organizing and leading the pledge of a new Pampanga Nutrition Media to counterpart various upcoming promotion activities of NNC Region 03.
The newly born Nutrition Media Task Force of Central Luzon is a mixture of old and new breeds of broadcasters and government information officers.
For her part, Maestre is overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the participants as manifested by their intelligent outputs in their communication plans that are realistic and comfortable to execute.
It could be gleaned from their output presentations, Central Luzon nutrition effort targets a combat against malnutrition at an early age and to emboss the message of breastfeeding without let up.
NNC Region 03 covers the provinces of Pampanga, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Tarlac, Zambales, and Bataan, as well as the cities of Cabanatuan, Gapan, Palayan, San Jose, Angeles, Mabalaiat, San Fernando, San Jose del Monte, Science City of Munoz, Meycauayan, Malolos, Tarlac, Balanga, and Olongapo.

The National Nutrition Council Regions II and III merged the conduct of their staff development and team building activity last September 11-12 2013 at Holiday Inn, Clark, Pampanga. Headed by Ms. Rhodora G. Maestre, Region II Nutrition Program Coordinator and Region III OIC Nutrition Program Coordinator, the activity went very productive and fun. All Staff of the said regions attended the activity with positive outlook in upholding their capacities to work for nutrition.
As part of the opening program, NPC Maestre gave a heart-warming and meaningful message where she stated the goals and expected outputs of the said training. According to her, the staff development and team building activity intents to improve the skills and capabilities of NNC Staff in coordinating nutrition programs. Moreover, she stated that the activity targets to build camaraderie among RO2 and RO3 staff and to develop a firm mind-setting in working as sister regions. NPC Maestre also said that NNC Staff are expected to formulate their own Citizen’s Charter and report regarding the role of NNC during disaster emergencies in response to DOH Department Order.
The team building activity proceeded with a lecture-discussion on basic concepts regarding team building and staff development. Short and simple activities were also facilitated which can help in building excellent work relationships. After the lecture-discussion, several games were contested to empower the application of the different skills and capabilities in real life situations. The two-day activity culminated happily with the NNC Staff determined to work hand in hand and to continue in producing nutrition champions.

Baguio City- Amidst the gustiness of storm Maring, the National Nutrition Council- Cagayan Valley held the Nutrition Program Management (NPM) training last August 19- 23, 2013 attended by the courageous and dedicated City/Municipal Nutrition Action Officers and Nutrition Officers of the region. The NPM training aims to improve the capacity of local nutrition workers for them to effectively and efficiently coordinate and implement their local nutrition programs.
NNC Technical staff and Nutrition Officers from Cagayan, Quirino and Nueva Vizcaya facilitated the said training.
Participants were very cooperative and eager to learn new skills, values and terminologies in the areas of nutrition program management. Furthermore, the cold weather in Baguio City turned very hot with the fruitful and constructive lecture-discussions, group workshops, presentations, exercises and sharing of experiences handled by the trainers/facilitators. The NPM training culminated victoriously with the fulfilled participants challenged to continue their dedication and commitment in working for nutrition improvement.
