mellpiMarch 24, 2014- The Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) of NNC Calabarzon started its Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) and the Search for the Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) and Outstanding Barangay. The first two cities that were visited were Batangas City and Cabuyao City.

Batangas City was monitored last March 25, 2014 and the evaluators were Ms. Diane Sadorra-Kabisig ng Kalahi, Ms.Lewina Tolentino- National Food Authority and Teamleader Ms. Lourdes Bulante from NNC IV-A. Cabuyao City were monitored last March 24, 2014. They were evaluated by Ms. Karen Soltura- Department of Interior and Local Government, Dra. Annaliza Araojo- Department of Education and Ms. Mary Mei Javier from NNC IV-A.

The MELLPI will run until September of 2014. This yearly monitoring and evaluation of the nutrition programs conducted by the RNET will help the Local Government Units (LGUs) to improve and be guided thoroughly on how they can continually  eradicate the malnutrition situation in their respective jurisdiction.

naopa assembly10 April 2014 – 51 Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs) and 22 representatives from the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon gathered at the Makati Palace Hotel for the first Meeting and General Assembly of the Nutrition Action Officers Association of the Philippines (NAOPA) – Calabarzon Chapter. The meeting was comprised of discussions on the various issues and concerns of the NAOPA including the organizational concerns and its Constitution and By-Laws, updates on NNC programs and activities, and a lecture on Nutrition Management in Emergencies.

Ms. Carina Z. Santiago, the NNC IV-A regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, and the NAOPA – Calabarzon Chapter President, and Laguna Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) Ms. Teresita S. Silo presided the discussions during the meeting. Morever, Ms. Carmelita Abalos, the NAOPA National President, and Mandaluyong City Nutrition Action Ofiicer (CNAO) delivered updates regarding the association and its activities. Clarifications on the association’s structure and regulations were done through an interactive forum among the NAOs.

The updates on NNC programs and activities intended to prompt the NAOs in being effective and efficient in their work, not only in planning and implementing nutrition programs, as well as in their monitoring and evaluation, and documentation. On the other hand, the lecture on Nutrition Management in Emergencies was to equip the NAOs with knowledge on nutrition activities in times of disasters.

The meeting gave chance for the NAOs to meet their counterparts in other provinces. The time to mingle with each other was not too long but it gave them a head start on being acquainted with each other.

FNRI dissemination forum17 October 2014 – The Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) through the Department of Science and Technology IV-A (DOST IV-A) divulged during the Regional Dissemination Forum on the 8th National Nutrition Survey (NNS) at the Traders Hotel, Pasay City that Calabarzon region is presently facing a double burden of malnutrition: high undernutrition prevalene concurrently exists with high overnutrition prevalence. Around 50 nutrition stakeholders including nutrition action officers, nutrition program coordinators, information officers, regional line agencies representatives, dean and director of state colleges and universities (SUCs) and non-government organizations delegates in the region attended the forum.

The survey results showed that about 9 in every 100 (8.7%) pre-school children in Calabarzon were underweight for their age (or wasted). Compared to the national prevalence of 7.9%, the Calabarzon region shows higher prevalence. Moreover, wasting was also widespread among the school children of the region, having 9.2% prevalence compared to the 8.6% national prevalence. In addition to this, adolescents in the region also suffer from wasting. The survey showed that the regional prevalence of wasting among adolescents was 3% higher than the national prevalence of 12.4%. The same holds true with the underweight prevalence among lactating mothers in the region having 1.6% higher than the national prevalence. Also, the occurrence of nutritionally-at-risk pregnant women in Calabarzon (28.7%) was higher than of the national level (24.8%).

calabarzon niem forum 201415 July 2014 - National Nutrition Council (NNC) Calabarzon gathered nutrition action officers for a two day forum and workshop on nutrition in times of emergencies and disasters in line with the 2014 Nutrition Month themed “Kalamidad paghandaan: Gutom at malnutrisyon agapan” at the Makati Palace Hotel from July 14 to 15.

The forum highlighted the need for nutrition to be given high priority especially during times of disasters. Office of Civil Defense – Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (OCD-RDRRMC) Regional Director Vicente Tomazar, Department of Health – Health Emergency and Management Staff (DOH-HEMS) National Coordinator Dr. Ronald Law, NNC Nutrition Officer Margarita Enriquez, UNICEF Consultant Alex Iellamo, Save the Children Coordinator Dr. Amado Parawan, UNICEF Nutrition Information Management Officer Dominik Koppel and Laguna Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Teresita Silo-Ramos served as resource speakers on sharing good practices and expertise during disasters and calamities.

fbns 4thquarterly meeting20 November 2014 – Presidents of the Barangay Nutrition Scholars Federation from the cities and provinces of the region convened for the 4th Quarter Meeting held in Tagaytay International Convention Center. The main agenda of the meeting was to firm up the plan for the federations’ resource generation project. The group proposed for a raffle draw in the following year. The mechanics and ticket assignments were discussed among members.

The raffle scheme assigned in the Ways and Means Committee was reported by BNS Teresita H. Arines of Dasmariñas City. The fund raising activity was set to be held on January 2015. The printed raffle tickets shall be distributed to the FBNS IV-A members on December 15, 2014. Proceeds of the raffle will be used for the federations identified needs and others will be kept in bank. Raffle prizes to be given away will be further discussed by the group.

On the other hand, Treasurer BNS Norma Gonzales of Rizal Province reported the status of the associations’ funds. Each officer and member also reported the status of the annual dues and membership fees collection. The organizational issues and concerns of the members were then discussed and settled. Lastly, RNPC Santiago updated the BNSs about the 10 Kumainments which is the popularized version of the 10 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos.

NAOs Conference CALABARZON23 – 24 October 2014 – Nutrition Action Officers all over Calabarzon participated at the 3rd National Conference of Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs) with the theme “I Need You NAO and Forever” held at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. During the event, NAOPA – Calabarzon Chapter President and Laguna Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Teresita S. Ramos was elected as NAOPA Vice-President for Luzon. Moreover, the Calabarzon NAOs won 3rd place at the Regional NAOs Talent Showdown.

In partnership with the Nutrition Action Officers Association of the Philippines (NAOPA), Inc., the National Nutrition Council conducted a 2-day event full of activities and lectures which not only added knowledge and developed the skills of NAOs but also equipped them to be effective and efficient nutrition advocates, catalysts, and prime-movers in local nutrition programs. Aside from filling the NAOs with information, the event gave the NAOs an opportunity to meet and mingle with their counterparts from other parts of the country.

Furthermore, the convention gave the NAOPA, Inc. a chance to discuss various concerns of the association. Included in this assembly was the election of the association’s new set of officers. The elected Vice-President for Luzon Ms. Teresita S. Ramos will be one of the organization’s pillars who will guide the association in its endeavors and ventures. On the other hand, the NAOs were given a chance to showcase their talents and prowess through the Regional Talent Showdown.
