stakeholders forumA Stakeholder’s Forum on Hunger Mitigation” was held on 23 July 2013 at the Bayview Hotel in Manila as part of the Nutrition Month celebration in the Calabarzon region. The event was attended by local nutrition program implementers to include : the Provincial/City Nutrition Action Officers (P/CNAOs), District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators (D/CNPCs), Officers of the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars in Region IV-A (FBNS IV-A Inc.), Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) on Nutrition from various line agencies and Calabarzon local media group –Communicators’ Network for Nutrition in Region IV-A (CNN-4A).

The Scaling-Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Framework presented by Ms. Loida Y. Sevilla of Plan International Philippines was the highlight of the forum. This was followed by the expression of statement of support by the various stakeholders to support the SUN Movement, with the other participants also signing in the SUN Movement Pledge board.


Scaling Up Nutrition, or SUN, is a unique Movement founded on the principle that all people have a right to food and good nutrition. It unites people—from governments, civil society, the United Nations, donors, businesses and researchers—in a collective effort to improve nutrition.

ms calabarzon bns10 September 2013 – the Pre-pageant Event for the 1st ever Search for Ms. Calabarzon BNS 2013 was held at the Ynares Hall, Provincial Capitol in Antipolo City.

The pageant had two (2) categories namely: the category A for BNSs aged 20 to 39 and; category B for BNS aged 40 to 60. A total of 18 Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) from various municipalities and cities in the region competed for the special awards such as “Best in Casual Wear”, “Best in Sports Wear”, “Best in Long Gown” and “Best in Talent”. The candidates ramped with their casual wear, sportswear and long gown and showcased their talent through dancing, singing and acting.

The awards committee of the BNS Congress composed mainly of the Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) on Nutrition served as the judges which included: Ms. Gualberta C. Florendo (Regional Rural Improvement Clubs); Ms. Precilla S. Escalante (DSWD); Ms. Josephine Santos (PopCom); Ms. Bezaleel Soltura (DILG); Ms. Dianne G. Sadorra (Kabisig ng Kalahi); Dra. Saniata Milagros Sumangil (National Commission for Indigenous People); Ms. Gloria Arenillo (NFA); and Mr. Red C. Alano, Vice-President of the Communicators’ Network for Nutrition in Region IV-A (CNN-4A).

Results of the pre-pageant will comprise 60% of the total score of the competition while the remaining 40% will be determined during the question and answer portion which will be held on the Congress proper.

The Ms. BNS competition is being held by the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars of Region IV-A (FBNS IV-A) to foster camaraderie among BNSs, boost their morale, and showcase their talents. It is hoped that with this competition, the high morale will eventually translate to a more vigorous fulfillment of their duties and responsibilities in promoting good nutrition.

Who will be crowned as the 1st ever Ms. Calabarzon BNS 2013? This we will find out on the 1st Regional BNS Congress on 18 October 2013 at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

 team bldg sis rivkha29 October 2013 – the Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs), members of the Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) on Nutrition and NNC IV-A regional office staffs have undertaken the phase one (1) of Essence as part of the team building exercise given by the National Nutrition Council – CaLaBaRZon held at the Mary Ridge Good Shepherd Convent and Retreat House in Tagaytay City.

Sister Mary Rebecca ‘Rivkha’ E. Rogacion facilitated the said activity. The Essence aims to: recognize  the gifts and limitations of the self and others; to be appreciative of the peculiar gifts of one another in the group; recognize the complementariness of the different Essences; identify strategies for enhancing one’s gifts; affirm one’s contribution to achieving goals in any given group; and recognize the equality of men and women.

nmptraininglucenacity2-6 and 16-20 September 2013 – The Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs) of CaLaBaRZon region had recently undergone a series of trainings to capacitate them on the Nutrition Program Management (NPM) and Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) at the Eurotel Hotel in Makati City.

NAOs from selected municipalities of Quezon province and other municipalities and cities in the region comprised the participants of the said trainings. The activity aimed to empower the new and/or untrained nutrition workers in managing the local nutrition program as well as the Barangay Nutrition Scholars in their respective localities.

The action officers were given various workshops and exercises to upgrade their knowledge and skills specifically in the area of nutrition program planning and management, and in supervising the BNS, for them to become effective nutrition program managers. They also made their re-entry plans which are expected to be implemented once they return to their areas.

nmptraininglucenacityThe former PNAO Agripino R. Tullas initiated the said activity in support to the newly appointed PNAO Mr. Roberto D. Gajo. The member agencies of the committee were called together to assess the trends in nutrition situation of the province as well as to review on the roles and responsibilities of the members of the PNC.

During the 3-day activity, the group was given inputs on the phases of nutrition program management facilitated by RNPC Carina Z. Santiago of NNC, NO III Bulante, DNPCs Emma F. Coronado, Elenor Jetomo and HEPO Milagros Flavier. The lectures given were basics that the group needs to know for an effective and efficient management and implementation of nutrition programs in the province. Along with the lectures were series of workshops to determine their level of understanding and to formulate the outputs being asked. The PNC successfully formulated their goals, objectives, problem tree and local nutrition action plan including the interventions to address the different nutrition problems.

PNAO Gajo said they definitely need to do series of meetings in the coming days for the PNAP to be completed and enhanced. Meanwhile, PPDO staff committed to help in integrating the plan to the LGUs AIP for supplemental funding for 2014 and for inclusion in the AIP for year 2015 and 2016.

Quezon PNC trusts that they can alleviate and eradicate the malnutrition through proper identification of necessary interventions and through convergence of efforts from various PNC member agencies and other nutrition stakeholders. He also said that the Honorable Governor David C. Suarez Jr. is in union with them in their quest/battle in fighting malnutrition in the province.

iycf refresher1-4 October 2013 – the National Nutrition Council- Calabarzon headed by RNPC Carina Z. Santiago conducted its first batch of Orientation on Mobilizing Community Support for Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) program at the Eurotel Hotel in Pedro Gil, Malate, Manila. A total of 30 Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs), Municipal Health Officers (MHOs), Nurses and Midwives from 16 municipalities and 1 city in Quezon province comprised the participants.

The 4-day course aims to orient the health and nutrition workers previously trained on IYCF counseling, as well as update them on some developments since the training of the IYCF counseling course, which includes the use of IYCF counseling cards and the Guide for mobilizing community support group.

Further, the said orientation intends to guide the participants in the creation of IYCF support groups in their respective localities and to establish functional peer groups and counselors who will help in the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding and complementary feeding to target mothers and caregivers.
