She also informed the pregnant mothers that there is a breastfeeding station located at the 3rd floor near the Lavish Lashes studio where they can breastfeed their babies and shop thereafter.

A total of 20 participants composed of 9 DNPCs, 2 CNPCs, 1 PNAO, 5 CNAO and 3 nutrition staffs from the 5Provinces and 17 Cities in CALABARZON Region attended the Competency Development Training on the Verification of Wooden Height Boards and Weighing Scales on May 17, 2013 at the Conference room of the National Nutrition Council in Taguig City.
The aim of the training was to equip the local nutrition workers on the correctprocedures of verifying the height and weight measuring instrument which was used during the Operation Timbang and Growth Monitoring activities to ensure and validate the accuracy of data.
The training was a collaborative effort of the National Nutrition Council and the Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Engineers Joel B. Bañares, Jr. and Rommel N. Coroña, Senior Science Research Specialists of MIRDC were the speakers/ during the training.After the lectures and demonstration, the participants were given hands-on activity which also served as their practicum session to gain the necessary skills in verification.
In order to be a certified heightboard and weighing scale verifier the participants need to successfully pass the competency examination. Only those who successfully passed are qualified to do regular quality assurance and control of height boards and weighing scales in their respective local government units (LGUs).

19-20 July 2013 – a communication planning workshop for the promotion of the 2012 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF) was held at the Bayview Park Hotel in Manila. NNC 4A, headed by RNPC Carina Z. Santiago call on the Information officers from the provinces and cities in the region as well as the media practitioners in the said activity. The workshop aims to come up with a comprehensive regional communication plan to promote the 2012 NGF.
NO II Bulante presented the regional nutrition situation of the region to allow the group to have a clear picture of the nutrition issues or concerns and also to prioritize the NGF communication messages which they shall deliver to the target audiences. The guidelines on the promotion of 2012 NGF were also discussed by NO III Palencia.
Information Officer IV, Mr. Carlo Gonzaga of PIA- Calabarzon, facilitated the planning workshop and explained the system of implementation for the promotion of NGF. He emphasized on the importance of conveying the right message from the communicator, to the right audience through the right channel at the right time. He also mentioned the different channels that the group can utilize such as the interpersonal/group, mass media, special media and the new media.

19 August 2013 – When typhoon Maring and habagat hit the country affecting the whole Metro Manila and some of the provinces in Ca
RNPC Carina Z. Santiago called on the Nutrition Action Officers of the affected provinces to perform their duties in Nutrition in Emergencies specifically conducting rapid nutrition assessment (RNA) in evacuation centers, providing vitamin A supplements for children, and counseling for mothers on infant feeding in emergency.labarzon specifically Cavite, Laguna and Rizal, deep floods again displaced families and transferred to the evacuation centers.
Ms. Jellie Anne C.Palencia (NO III) and Ms. Lourdes B. Bulante (NO II) of NNC Calabarzon visited Barangay Palingon Evacuation Center in Calamba City, while Ms. Aleli Catalina Y. Jimenez (CNAO) and the Ms. Divinia Obaña (BNS) conducted RNA including measurement of MUAC among 6-59 months old children and resulted to identification of 1 MAM and no SAM. Ms. Obaña also distributed Vitamin A capsules to target children. A toal of 178 families with 649 individuals and 115 children ages 6-71 months were assisted.
Another activity was conducted by the Emergency Response Team of the DOH-CHD Calabarzon and Ms.Jane Christine B. Guballa of NNC Calabarzon in two (2) evacuation centers in Taytay, Rizal (Exodus Elementary School and E. Rodriguez Elementary School). Identified number of evacuees was 3,365. The team conducted interview with MSWDO and some barangay leaders regarding the food and water supply in the evacuation centers. Samples of the water supply were also subjected to testing.
NNC Calabarzon in coordination with the LGU shall continue to monitor the affected families and ensure that all priority groups will be given appropriate nutrition services.

26 July 2013 – Coinciding with the observation of Nutrition Month, around 1,000 school children from Sumilang Elementary School in Barangay San Jose, Antipolo City benefitted from the 1st Regional Nutrition Service Caravan jointly spearheaded by the Regional Development Council (RDC) and the National Nutrition Council (NNC) of Region IV-A Calabarzon in cooperation with the city government of Antipolo and the provincial government of Rizal.
Elementary and day care students were given health and nutrition services such as: medical and dental, nutrition assessment and counseling, lectures, film showing, information campaign on deworming, among others. Selected families also received seedlings and food packs as beneficiaries of the ‘Food-For-Work’ program by the DSWD which then encouraged the families to be self-sufficient through planting.
NNC 4A Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Carina Z. Santiago said that the convergence of different national government agencies in Antipolo City showed their desire and commitment to fight and end hunger and malnutrition in the country.
Meanwhile, National Economic Development Authority (NEDA 4A) Regional Director and RDC Acting-Chairman Ms. Agnes Espinas said that the event is not a one-stop activity. Rather, RDC will continue to monitor the development of the community and its people. Furthermore, she said that the nutrition service caravan was hoped to be replicated in the other areas of the region.

23 August 2013 – SM City Calamba tapped NNC Calabarzon in celebration of the National Breastfeeding Awareness Month through a mini symposium held at the Cyber Zone Activity Center in SM City Calamba. The participants include pregnant mothers from the five (5) barangays in Calamba City.
NO III Jellie Anne C. Palencia of NNC-Calabarzon provided technical assistance by giving a lecture on the 2013 Breastfeeding Awareness Month theme, “Let’s bring breastfeeding closer to mothers” emphasizing the importance of peer counseling.
Ms. Palencia discussed the circle of support for mothers and children in pursuing breastfeeding practices namely from the: family/social network; workplace and employment; health care system; government/legislation and; response to crisis or emergency. She also mentioned one of the campaign strategies of DOH to promote exclusive breastfeeding – the Breastfeeding TSEK or “Breastfeeding Tama, Sapat at EKsklusibo” and some of the myths and misconceptions on breastfeeding. She also gave recommendations on how breastfeeding can be done comfortably and successfully.

13 August 2013 – NNC Calabarzon celebrates Breastfeeding Awareness Month with this year’s theme – “Let’s bring breastfeeding closer to mothers” via on air through the radio station DZJV 1458 kHz in Calamba City. RNPC Santiago guested for an interview with the news director and news anchor of DZJV, Mr. Emil Delos Santos in his radio segment “Tinig Kalusugan.”
RNPC Santiago explained to the listeners the relevance and significance of breastfeeding both for the mother and infant. She mentioned that breastmilk is the best food any mother can give to her baby and also the first immunization of her baby because it provides antibodies which helps strengthens the baby’s immune system. She also shared on the right positioning of the baby for a comfortable and relaxing breastfeeding moments of the mother and baby.
When asked on the programs being given by the government to support breastfeeding campaign, RNPC Santiago said that the National Nutrition Council have provided capacity building among health and nutrition workers on the Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices as well as monitoring on the implementation of EO 51 or the Milk Code and RA 10028 or Expanded Breastfeeding Act at the local level and in the work places.
