pcnaos rtwg meetingFebruary 6, 2014, Manila- The Provincial and City Nutrition Action Officers (P/CNAOs) of CALABARZON together with the Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) convene for their First Quarter 2014 Joint Meeting. The meeting tackled a number of new inter-agency interventions scheduled for implementation in 2014 such as Search for Outstanding Nutrtion Action Officers (NAOs) and Project Orientation on Documentation of Good Practices in the Implementation of RA 10028 or the “Expanded Breastfesding Act”. The meeting also covered a discussion on the progress of regular activities particularly results of Operation Timbang, schedule of MELLPI visits, NAOPA Plans for 2014, RTWG Plans for 2014 and Updates from the National Nutrition Council of Region IV-A.

rtwg4 March 2014 - The Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) on Nutrition committed to visit the nutritionally depressed municipality, Jomalig in Quezon during the Special meeting held at the CHD IV-A Building in Quezon City.

Ranking consistently first in terms of high prevalence in malnutrition in the region as well as in the national level for more than a year, the RTWG took the challenge to visit and experience themselves the way of living in the said community.

It was second quarter of last year when the group was able to meet with the Jomalig Municipal Nutrition Committee headed by its Chair, Mayor Rodelo Tena, MNAO Ms. Liza Eyatid, MHO Dr. Rita Ang and other members. During the meeting, several issues were raised which the MNC believe have caused the consistent high prevalence of the municipality and they are as follows: low prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding (34.0%); incapacitated BNS; food insecurity; poor health seeking behavior; poor knowledge on proper health and nutrition practices and; presence of illness such as diarrhea and pneumonia.

cnn4a media service caravanLucena City - Around 100 pregnant women, 36 lactating mothers and 56 Barangay Nutrition Scholars actively participated in the Media Service Caravan: Breastfeeding Month Celebration held in this city, sponsored by the National Nutrition Council - CALABARZON, Communicators’ Network for Nutrition in Region IV-A (CNN-4A), SM Cares, and Lucena City Nutrition Committee last August 29 at the event Center of SM City Lucena.

The said event was supervised by Ms. Carina Z. Santiago, RNPC, Ms. Lourdes B. Bulante, NO III, and Ms. Hannah Christina P. Clemente, NO I of NNC-CALABARZON while the CNN-4A Nutrition was represented by Ms. Janet Buelo, CNN-4A President, together with the Public Information Officers of different cities and municipalities in CALABARZON, including Batangas City, Cabuyao City, Dasmarinas City, Lucena City, Quezon Province, Laguna Province, Rizal Province, Sta. Rosa, San Pablo, DZJV, Ronda Balita, Radyo Kaisahan Arya & Radyo ng Bayan-Lucena.

Tackled in the event includes the importance of ten (10) Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), emphasizing the importance of eating fruits and vegetables to get good nutrition, good diet and understand the importance of breast feeding. According to Dra. Maria Teresa Corpuz, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist, newborns should get the colostrum - the initial surge of milk from a mother.

disaster operations25 July 2014 – The Calabarzon Regional Nutrition Cluster members, together with the Nutrition Cluster Coordinator and RNPC Carina Z. Santiago and Staff conducted rapid nutrition assessment among infants and young children as well as IYCF counseling to mothers and guardians in the evacuation centers in Barangay Parian and Pansol in Calamba City and Barangay Masaya and Tranca in Bay, Laguna.

Having discussed during the emergency meeting held the day before, the Regional Nutrition Cluster went to fulfill their functions and duties by providing nutrition response to the people situated in the said evacuation centers. The cluster members measured the mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of the children to identify their nutritional status. They have identified two (2) moderate acute malnourished (MAM) children among the 26 children assessed, where they were later referred to proper authorities. On the other hand, the importance of breastfeeding specifically during disasters was emphasized to the lactating mothers and more so to those seen currently bottle-feeding their young ones, during one-on-one counselling by the Cluster members.

NOBNSBarangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) Efigenia G. Javier of Brgy. Maharlika East, Tagaytay City was awarded as the National Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (NOBNS) during the 2014 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (NNAC) held on 22 October 2014 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City. Together with DOH IV-A Regional Director Dr. Nestor F. Santiago, Jr., RNPC Carina Z. Santiago, Tagaytay City Mayor Agnes D. Tolentino, Brgy. Captain Joel B. Tibayan, and City Nutrition Action Officer Engr. Emilma U. Pello, BNS Javier received her plaque of appreciation and cash award worth Php 150,000.

BNS Javier stood out among the other 7 finalists because of her promising and excellent management of their barangay nutrition programs, advocacy to continually improve the nutrition situation in their community and also because of the strong support of her Barangay Nutrition Committee. During her speech, she shared that she was overwhelmed by the extent of a BNS’ duties at first but then accepted it as a challenge. Having to work round that clock, she has experienced a lot from being a BNS and eventually loved her job.

calabarzon national breast feeding month27 August 2014 – Upholding and strengthening linkages to various organizations for nutrition advocacy, the National Nutrition Council CALABARZON joined the SM Cares - SM City Calamba and Calamba City Nutrition Action Office in their celebration of the 2014 National Breastfeeding Awareness Month held at the Cyber Zone Activity Center. The participants of the said activity were about 120 pregnant women and lactating mothers from various barangays in Calamba City.

Technical assistance was provided by Nutrition Officer I Hannah Christina P. Clemente of NNC CALABARZON through a brief lecture on the 2014 Breastfeeding Month theme “Gatas ng Ina: Tama, Sapat Eksklusibo, Siguradong Panalo!” emphasizing on the importance and benefits of the early breastfeeding initiation and exclusive breastfeeding. A preview of the 2014 World Breastfeeding Week with a theme “Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal for Life!” focusing on the protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding in relation to achieving the 2015 Millennium Development Goals was also shared to the participants.
