The pretesting of the Nutrition-School-on-the-Air (NSOA) for the “10 Kumainments” was successfully aired over DZJV 1458 kHz in the Province of Laguna last August 22 to September 2, 2016 and September 12 to 23, 2016, participated by different towns and cities of Laguna. It was a live on-air schooling that featured the 10 Nutritional Guidelines to promote healthy lifestyle among Filipinos and to address and prevent malnutrition, and diet-related non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
The “10 Kumainments” was patterned after the 10 Commandments, chiseled by lightning in stone tablets given to Moses found in the Book of Exodus. In equivalent, the 10 Kumainments in nutrition are the Ten Commandments on how to live healthy etched in two loaves of bread carried by Mang Moi.
The Sta. Rosa City Nutrition Office, headed by Ms. Carmencita “Amy” Catindig, held the NSOA graduation last October 13, 2016 at the Sta. Rosa City Auditorium. City Nutrition Office Staff, Barangay Nutrition Scholars and about 300 participants were among the graduates of NSOA in Sta. Rosa City alone. Also present during the graduation were Ms. Carina Santiago, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC 4A, and Daniel Castro, Anchor/Head, News & Public Affairs of DZJV 1458 kHz. The graduation was also graced by the City Councilors of Sta. Rosa headed by Vice Mayor Arnold Arcillas, who also gave away six (6) tablets as prizes to lucky graduates.
Ms. Carina Santiago was overwhelmed with the results and enthusiasm of the participants in 10 Kumainments Nutrition School on the air in Sta. Rosa City alone, and very grateful to the support given by the City Government. Ms. Santiago assured that the NSOA program of NNC 4A will continually air next year. Sta. Rosa City is a Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN).

As mandated by Presidential Decree 1569, there should be one Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) in every barangay in the country whose task includes monitoring of the nutritional status of the children especially the malnourished; mobilizing the community with the goal of improving the nutrition situation; and linkage building. They are tasked to ensure that all members of the community especially the malnourished avail the nutrition and related services.
To ensure that our Nutrition Action Officers have an in-depth level of understanding of the job and responsibilities of our BNS, the National Nutrition Council annually conducts Training of Trainers on the Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars.

“First 1000 Days ni Baby Pahalagahan Para sa Malusog na Kinabukasan” is tagged as this year’s nutrition month theme -- to focus on the importance of improving provision of appropriate interventions in the first 1000 days of life. The month-long celebration was launched by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) last July 5, 2016 at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City.
The province of Quezon was chosen to be the venue for the launching because the province, (together with Lucena City) is included in the priority areas targeted under the Early Childhood Care and Development Intervention Package for the First 1000 Days (ECCD IP/1000 Days). The province is also implementing the “Quezon First 1000 Days of Life Program, otherwise known as the Q1K Program.

After 5 months of conducting the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) in the 5 provinces and 17 cities of the region, the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) gathered last September 13, 2016 at Eurotel, Makati to deliberate on the results of the evaluation and identify top performing LGUs.
The National Nutrition Council - Calabarzon identified the areas to be recognized during the 2016 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony to be held on November 11, 2016. Although still for validation by the NNC Central Office, the following were declared by the

This year, three (3) municipalities and one (1) city in Calabarzon were awarded by the Philippine Association of Nutrition (PAN) as “PSN Outstanding” for having successfully implemented the “Pabasa sa Nutrisyon” for 2015.” These are Alaminos, Laguna; Pangil Laguna; Padre Garcia, Batangas; and San Pedro City.
The other areas, namely: Sta. Cruz, Laguna and Tagaytay City, were both also recognized as “PSN Hall of Famer” for having efficiently and effectively implemented the “Pabasa sa Nutrisyon” for four (4) consecutive years.
“Pabasa sa Nutrisyon” is a “nutrition education peer to peer approach” conceptualized by the Nutrition Center of the Philippines (NCP) and is participated by mothers in the community. Mothers take turns reading the manual provided which contains good nutrition practices. Thereafter, the mothers are involved in informal discussion on topics which includes breastfeeding, balanced diet and the value of vitamins and minerals. There are also fun learning activities like games that help enhance the understanding of the topics discussed.
The Philippine Association of Nutrition (PAN) gives annual recognition to local government units whose efforts in project implementation are exceptional.

Twenty eight (28) participants completed the 4-day 2016 Nutrition Program Management (NPM) Training ” of National Nutrition Council (NNC) last August 9 to 12 at the Makati Palace Hotel in Makati City. The participants (composed of NNC Calabarzon Region’s Nutrition Action Officers, District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators, members of the Nutrition Evaluation Team and Nutrition Staff) are also the new set of Nutrition Program Managers.
NNC Calabarzon is hoping that the new set of Nutrition Program Managers will be strong allies in formulating and implementing more effective nutrition programs to help alleviate food and nutrition security problems in the region and in the country.
