The indigenous sour and steamy taste of a recipe entry of Ms. Merrcedita Abe and Leila Delos Santos of Antipolo City garnered the 1st place in the NNC Regional Recipe Development Contest of National Nutrition Council Region IV held last April 26, 2012 at Quirino Memorial Medical Center Covered Court. Sinigang na Dalag sa Alibangbang, a version of a popular Filipino dish – Sinigang gained a 91.67 percentage score from the judges because of its original, unique and twisting sour taste made by an uncommon vegetable called “alibangbang.” Ms. Abe and Delos Santos brought home a cash prize of Php 10,000 and a certificate of recognition.
Second place was the “MaKaFiSi Balls” of Ms. Julie Bayugo and Emy Jamosale who are also from Antipolo City. The MaKaFiSi Balls which was described as a “child-friendly vegetable dish” garnered a percentage score of 91% and took home Php 8,000 and a certificate of recognition. Meanwhile, the “Vegetable Medley” by Gian Carla Fernandez and Arlene Esteves, from the Provincial Nutrition Office of Laguna landed on the 3rd spot with a percentage score of 88%. They received Php 6,000 and a certificate of recognition.
Consolation prize of Php 2,000 and a certificate of participation were given to: “P Noy Tsap Suy,” by Susan Gareza and Editha Java of San Mateo, Rizal; “Pako Omellete over Kalabasa and Kamote Croquette with Teriyaki Sauce” by Ms. Azenith A. Ramos and Mr. Rizalvy Ramos of Lucena City; and “Sweet and Spicy Talong” by Ms. Elizabeth Viernes and Minerva Toldoya of Dasmariñas City.

In line with the nationwide celebration of this year’s Nutrition Month, Karangalan Elementary School in Cainta, Rizal joined thousands of school children all over the country in a simultaneous vegetable planting last July 2, 2012.PICT6479
A foot parade which was participated in by school children from kinder to Grade VI, teachers, personnel and parents of the said school formally opened the event. During the foot parade, school children wore vegetable costumes such as hats decorated with different kinds of vegetables, vegetable masks, and vegetable mascots; some of the children also brought with them baskets loaded with vegetables, posters and slogans with messages about vegetables.
The foot parade, was followed by a short program done at the covered court of Karangalan PICT6526Elementary School. The program was highlighted with the messages given by Principal Fe F. Maala of Karangalan Elementary School and NO II Julius Cesar P. Alejandre of National Nutrition Council Region IV. Principal Maala emphasized that children should start eating vegetables at an early age because vegetable consumption supports the proper physical growth and mental development of children. She also shared their school’s contribution in nourishing the school children through their school canteen’s effort of providing nutritious, clean and safe food to the school children. NO II Alejandre on the other hand, explained the theme for the 2012 Nutrition Month which is, “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain.” He gave details on the benefits and importance of eating vegetables and further expounded the significance of Nutrition Month to Filipinos.
Song renditions, dances and speech choir by the school children made the event more exciting.
PICT6543The vegetable planting followed right after the program. One hundred thirty school children from Grade VI joined the planting of various vegetable seedlings such as okra, bush sitao, pechay and mustard in ten plots prepared by Karangalan Elementary School. They were assisted by their Edukasyong Pantahan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) teachers. Ms. Maala invited the National Nutrition Council Region IV to visit the vegetable garden after a month to see its improvement and status of the planted vegetables. Aside from the vegetables given by Department of Agriculture (DA) thru National Nutrition Council; malunggay, ampalaya and upo was also planted in the same garden.
The National Nutrition Council Region IV fervently hopes that the activity will strengthen its campaign of encouraging schools, families and communities in putting up vegetable gardens to ensure vegetable supply and eventually increase the consumption of vegetables here in the Philippines.

“Padamihin ang miyembro ng Pederasyon! Padamihin ang pondo!” was the direction set for the FBNS, Inc. for 2013 by the regional BNS federation officers and board of directors during their 1st Quarter Meeting and Team Building on 22-23 February 2013 at the Tesoro’s Farm and Resort in Bay, Laguna.
FBNS, IV-A President, Ms. Karen Ballonado led the Officers and Board in crafting the plans of the Federation for 2013 which included the recruitment of more members to be able to increase their funds for the conduct of their planned activities and work program. Other plans of the Federation include the following: the reorganization and strengthening of the provincial/city BNS associations; fund raising through direct solicitation to their respective LGUs; capacity building for the officers and board members on basic computer skills, proposal making, leadership training and proper bookkeeping and; Lakbay-aral to the 2011 National Outstanding BNS.

On December 4, 2012 at the Hotel H2O, Manila, the Calabarzon Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony 2012 was held to honor Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), Nutrition Action Officers (NAO’s) and Local Government Officials from the different cities and provinces of the region. The event’s highlights were the messages given by: Ms. Carina Z. Santiago, Nutrition Program Coordinator of CALABARZON; Honorable Angelo B. Palmones (Representative, Agham Party list); Mayor Jose F. Mendoza (Chair, Municipal Nutrition Committee Atimonan, Quezon); Ms. Cecilia S. Santos (BNS, Barangay Kaybagal South); Director Josefina Castilla-Go (Regional Director, DILG and Vice Chair of RSCN) and the Keynote Speech of Director Edgardo M. Gonzaga (Director IV, DOH-CHD IV-A).

Lessons on how to practice good nutrition can now be heard on radio as the Nutrition School on the Air (NSOA) in the province of Laguna takes its maiden broadcast on March 1, 2013 over DZJV 1458 kHz in Calamba City. The NSOA will be aired from Monday to Friday at 1:30-2:00 p.m., with Mr. Daniel Castro as anchor, and Provincial Nutrition Action Officer, Ms. Teresita Silo as co-anchor.
The NSOA will involve all the City/Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (C/MNAOs) of Laguna in the conduct of the NSOA specifically in disseminating information in their respective municipalities and cities, recruiting participants to enroll in said program, monitoring and evaluation through the conduct of pre and post test, and coordinating the graduation exercises. NNC NO III Jellie Anne C. Palencia conducted an orientation on NSOA during the 1st Quarter Meeting of the C/MNAOs of Laguna on February 6, 2013 at the Provincial Nutrition Office in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

15 January 2013 – During the 1st Quarter 2013 Meeting of the Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) on Nutrition held at the Conference Room of the Center for Health and Development IV-A in Project 4, Quezon City, a new member was welcomed by the group. Ms. Vicki Wieneke, the president and founder of Kabisig ng Kalahi, a nongovernment organization (NGO) and long-time partner of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) IV-A in their feeding programs was invited by DSWD to share their best practices and also for her to have a clear picture of the nutrition situation in the region. In acknowledgement, she informed the group that she looks forward to being a member of the RTWG and being able to help in the group’s as well as the Regional Sub-Committee on Nutrition's (RSCN) mission of ensuring effective harmonization of regional efforts of public and private sectors and other stakeholders in addressing hunger and malnutrition in Calabarzon.
The RTWG members, in the same meeting reviewed the activities conducted in 2012 and discussed the plan of activities of the group for 2013. They decided to conduct a nutrition service caravan in the nutritionally depressed municipalities (NDM) in the region. One of the identified priorities is Jomalig in Quezon province which topped the ranking of municipalities with very high prevalence of underweight preschool children at the national level. The service caravan aims to provide nutrition services by the different member agencies of the RSCN to help in improving the nutrition situation in the target area.
The group also discussed the criteria for the Search for the Outstanding Nutrition Action Officer (NAO) 2012 and the Search for Outstanding Barangay 2012, the new awards launched by the RSCN during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony in December 2012. The RTWG members were also updated on the New Nutritional Guidelines for Filipino (NGF), as well as other program updates.
