lactation station antipoloLactation Rooms in Antipolo City Hall are finally open for public. One of the rooms is found at the City Hall's ground floor in front of the Accounting Office and the other one is located at the Gender and Development (GAD) Center.

Mayor Danilo Leyble and the city councilors were very happy to announce recently that the city goverment finally established rooms exclusively for breastfeeding mothers. According to City Councilor Alexander Marquez, Chairman on Committee on Health, the city officials supported this kind of project because they wanted to provide a comfortable place for mothers to express their breastmilk or breastfeed their babies while they are doing business transaction in the city hall. The mayor approved the budget to construct the lactation rooms immediately without hesitation.

The Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS's) and the Barangay Health Workers (BHW's) are reponsible for the maintenance of the lactation rooms as per city order.

mnaos quezonThe National Nutrition Council Region IV-A, headed by OIC-NPC Ma. Eileen B. Blanco, organized a consultative meeting for Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAOs) for the province of Quezon on 11 January 2012 at the Center for Health Development (CHD), QMMC, Project 4, Quezon City. Discussed during the meeting is the forthcoming conduct of Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) barangay trainings for the remaining 50% of barangays targeted in Quezon. These trainings are scheduled to be conducted from January to May 2012. Trainings for the 1st 50% barangays of the province were conducted September to October 2011. These IYCF barangay trainings aims to equip health workers in barangays particularly Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), Barangay Health Workers (BHWs), Day Care Workers (DCWs) and volunteer mothers among others on promotion of good nutrition, particularly on exclusive breastfeeding and complementary feeding.

rscn1stmeetingThe Regional Sub-Committee on Nutrition of CALABARZON (RSCN IV-A) held its 1st quarter meeting on 12 April 2012 at Center for Health Development IV-A Conference Room, Project 4, Quezon City. Assistant Regional Director Corazon I. Flores, MD of Center for Health Development-DOH presided the meeting in behalf of the Chair, Regional Director Edgardo M. Gonzaga. Present in the meeting were Regional Directors and representatives from different member agencies which includes Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA) and Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR). Also present were Provincial Nutrition Officer (PNAO) of Rizal, Nutrition Officer (NO) of Lucena City and City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO) of Cavite City.
Discussed in the meeting were a) 2011 RSCN Accomplishments; b) 2012 RSCN Plans and Activities; c) 2011 Operation Timbang (OPT) Results of Pre School Children (PSC); d) 2010-2011 Operation Timbang (OPT) Results of School Children (SC); e) Updates on Kalusugang Pangkalahatan (DOH); and f) Expansion of RSCN membership to include PNAOs and CNAO of Lucena City being a Highly Urbanized City in the region.

tagaytay city bns drillThe City Nutrition Office and City Planning and Development Office of Tagaytay City in coordination with the Center for Health Development (CHD)-CALABARZON and National Nutrition Council Regional Office IV held its World Health Organization-Child Growth Standards (WHO-CGS) Training Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) last 1-3 February 2012 at Jeb Restaurant, Tagaytay International Convention Center (TICC), Tagaytay City. The said training was participated in by 33 BNSs of Tagaytay City.

The three-day training aimed to introduce and orient the new Child Growth Standards (CGS) to the BNSs and teach them how to measure the weight and length/height of children; assess children’s growth; and counsel the mothers on child’s growth and proper child feeding using the new CGS.

Packaged with module presentations, lectures, drills and field practice, the training was divided into two phases: the lecture proper and the practicum or the field practice.

Mr. Dan Sanares, Nurse I of Tagaytay City Health Office introduced Module A (Introduction of Module and Manual) to the participants. In his session, he basically discussed the overview of the Child Growth Standards, the development of CGS, the purpose and the objectives of the training course as well as the legal bases of the adoptation of Child Growth Standards in the country.

Discussions of Module B (Measuring Child’s Growth), Module C (Interpretation of Growth Indicators) and Core Developmental Milestones of Filipino Children were tackled by Ms. Jennifer Tañag, Nutritionist-Dietitian of Center for Health Development (CHD)-CALABARZON. Included in her discussion on Module B are the computation of a child’s age in months; recognition of clinical signs of marasmus and kwashiorkor; and measurement of the weight and the height/length of a child.

Calamba City conducts WHOEl Cielito Inn, Makati City – As part of “Capacity Building” for health workers, the City Nutrition Council of Calamba headed by CNAO Aleli Catalina Y. Jimenez conducted Child Growth Standard training last 13 – 15 March 2012. The 3-day training included: 1) Introduction (definition of terms); 2) Measuring of Child’s Growth; 3) Interpreting Growth Indicators; and 4) Counselling of Growth and Feeding. The training made use of various instructional methods such as reading, written exercises, discussions, role play, demonstration, and a practicum in order to capacitate the participants with knowledge and skills in weight and height measurements, age in onths computation, plotting of growth chart, and nutrition counselling.

Participants were health workers from the different barangays of Calamba City. They were composed of Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), midwives and nurses. Ms. Ma. Eileen B. Blanco, OIC-RNPC of National Nutrition Council Region IV and Ms. Jennifer M. Tañag, ND IV of Center for Health Development – DOH facilitated the training. rscn1stmeetingThe National Nutrition Council Regional Office 4 conducted its Joint Regional Program Implementation Review on Program Management Systems last 15-17 February 2012 at Pagsanjan Falls Lodge, Pagsanjan, Laguna. The said program implementation review was attended by members of Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG), Provincial Nutrition Action Officers (PNAO), City Nutrition Action Officers (CNAO), Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAO), Nutritionist-Dietitians (ND) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) from CALABARZON and MIMAROPA regions.
The three-day seminar workshop was composed of six technical sessions and two workshops. Included in the technical sessions are: 1) Reviewing the performance status of the Council; 2) Integrated Action for Hunger Alleviation and Improved Nutrition in Covergence Areas (HAIN) Overwiew; 3) Feedbacking and Action Lines 4) Updates on the Revised Operation Timbang (OPT) Guidelines/Form (including Height/Length Measurements); 5) Documenting Good Practices; and 6) Program Directions. Workshops dealt on: 1) Strategic Planning; and 2) Next Steps/Action Planning.
