The state of mental health in the Philippines still has a long way to go towards improvement. Mental illness has become the third most common disability in the Philippines wherein at least 3.6 million Filipinos suffer from one kind of mental, neurological, and substance use disorder as identified in the study conducted by Philippine WHO Special Initiative for Mental Health in the early 2020.
There are many factors that can contribute to one’s mental health condition, such as biological factors, life experiences, family history, socioeconomic status. But emerging research studies have shown that access to food and overall quality of diet can also affect a person’s mental health.

The power of breastmilk for babies is already well-established as breastfeeding offers children the healthiest start in life and perfect infant nutrition. A complete food that contains the energy, vitamins, and minerals that a child needs for optimum growth and development for 0-6 months old.
As we all know, breastmilk prevents undernutrition, infections such as ear infections, diarrhea, and other bacterial and viral infections. It also lowers the risk of having allergies and has been linked to higher IQ scores in later childhood. In addition to that, breastfeeding also prevents obesity in children.

Fat is essential and plays a useful role within our body. It gives energy, offers insulation from extreme temperatures and protection to vital organs, and help produce and regulate hormones. Dietary fat on the other hand, aids the transport and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins in the body.
Fats are essential to us, but we need to consume them in a limited amount. A diet low in fat is beneficial in reducing overall calorie intake which in turn helps in managing weight. Low fat diet also improves cholesterol and other blood lipid levels.
We considered a diet low-fat when its calories from fat is 30% or less. Foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains beans, lentils, peas, seafood, and lean meat are generally low in fat.
Typically, a low-fat diet will involve reducing fat intake from foods such as bacon, sausages, cured meats, butter, eggs and cheese. But more than avoiding such foods, there are ways to make your meals low in fat. Take some tips below for your next meal preparations!
