Article OJT Culmination19 October 2021, Cagayan de Oro City – Interns Keishe Jan T. Aban and Lorry Jane G. Rumbines, both senior students taking Bachelor of Science in Nutrition & Dietetics at Central Mindanao University, completed their 300 hours of community nutrition practicum at the National Nutrition Council Region X Office last 14 October 2021.

Ms. Aban and Ms. Rumbines started their internship last 23 August 2021, and are the first batch of interns to be engaged in a virtual setting due to the pandemic situation.

Both on-the-job trainees were exposed to the nutrition program management cycle, particularly on planning and implementation through drafting of a Barangay Nutrition Action Plan (BNAP). They partnered with Brgy. Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City for this purpose.

26 Radyo Kalambuan15 October 2021, Cagayan de Oro City – The National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region X conducted the 2nd semester monitoring in Radyo Kalambuan DXNE-FM 94.3, one of the Nutriskwela Community Radio Stations in the region, located at Media Center, Mindanao Civic Center, Tubod, Lanao del Norte on 13 October 2021. Nutrition Officer I Vazamija Therese A. Villasi facilitated the monitoring.

The radio station was off-air since 1 September 2021 due to damaged antenna. The management took action by coordinating with a radio technician in Cebu City regarding the replacement of the antenna.

According to radio staff Rosendo Sacote, the station will conduct a meeting on October 2021 to reorganize the Community Radio Council (CRC) and to update program schedule especially on the station personnel members.

NNC X advised Radyo Kalambuan to fast-track updates from the technician. Moreover, NNC X will continue to monitor and provide assistance so the radio station to support their endeavor on disseminating correct nutrition and nutrition-related information in Lanao del Norte and nearby areas. reviewed Infographics KAMUSTAHAN Session13 October 2021, Cagayan de Oro City – The National Nutrition Council (NNC) X and Department of Agrarian Reform through its Central, Regional and Provincial Offices held a virtual Kamustahan session with the participation of Agrarian Reform Beneficiary Organizations (ARBOs). Held 12 October 2021, the meeting was conducted to discuss program updates and issues encountered in the preparation and implementation of the Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program in Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte areas.

DAR X Assistant Regional Director, Seny Fe B.  Fabe her message said, “This session is an opportunity to converse with the updates, accomplishments and challenges encountered during the program’s implementation and minding the gap to strategize more effective steps for future engagement”. ARD Fabe also expressed her aspiration to continue the harmonious relationship and partnership between the two agencies for the years to come.

For the program update, NNC X's Provincial Nutrition Focal Points for Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte in the person of Mr. Gwyn Y. Balaba, and Ms. Lizelle Bete, respectively, discussed the Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program's overview, updates, accomplishments, challenges encountered, and program’s next steps.

Infographics Advocacy Meeting on TK DSP16 October 2021, Cagayan de Oro City — The National Nutrition Council (NNC) X holds a series of advocacy meetings in the Province of Lanao del Norte for the Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program (TK DSP), of which select local government units (LGUs) are recipients of Phases III & IV of the program.

NNC X, represented by Provincial Nutrition Focal Point (PNFP) Lizelle L. Bete and Nutrition Officer (NO) I Vazamija Therese A. Villasi, paid a visit to Local Chief Executives, Mayor Leoncio C. Bagol of LGU Tubod, and Mayor Judith V. Miquiabas of LGU Bacolod, Lanao del Norte.

PNFP Bete introduced and advocated the TK DSP, its objectives, components, priority groups, social preparation requirements and updates to the Municipal Mayors, Medical Health Officers and Nutrition Officers in the respective LGUs. In both LGUs, Nutritionist-Dietitians II Mitzilyn Brillo and Merry Glor Saure of the Department of Health accompanied NNC X.

During the fruitful dialogue, commitment and full support of the program were expressed especially by Municipal Mayor Bagol, wherein he conveyed his ambition to eradicate child malnutrition in their municipality by the end of the year. Furthermore, he added his concern that there are few Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) in one of their program recipient barangays, and tasked the Medical Health Officer, Dr. Maria Filipina Camins and Municipal Nutrition Action Officer, Cholie Mae Lahoylahoy to propose additional number of BNSs to the Punong Barangay as one of the preparations for the upcoming implementation of TK DSP. A total of 170 children aged 6-23 months will receive the program in Tubod.

World Sight Day 2021

Adapting to the new normal, most of the activities are shifted to digital platforms. Work and school activities are switched to online meetings and classes. Also, we connect with our families and friends via social media and virtual calls. These increase our screen times which can threaten our eye health.

Long exposure to digital devices can cause eyestrain that may lead to dry eyes, blurred or double vision or eye fatigue. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that at least 2.2 billion people globally have vision impairment. In addition, the most common eye problems are age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and blindness.

To give focus on the global issues on eye health, World Sight Day is observed every 14 October annually. This year’s theme “Love Your Eyes” aims to address eye health concerns by increasing awareness on eye health and getting sight tests.
