3FINALLYYYYYYYY Infographics Newborn ScreeningThe National Newborn Screening Week is celebrated annually every first week of October, pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 540. This event is commemorated to draw the public’s attention to the vital role of Newborn Screening (NBS) in the early detection and management of several congenital disorders, in which if left untreated may result to mental retardation, or worst, death.

Since 1996, NBS has been an integral part of routine newborn care in the Philippines. The Newborn Screening program in the Philippines originally only includes screening of six disorders namely: congenital hypothyroidism (CH), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), phenylketonuria (PKU), glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), and galactosemia (GAL).

Pursuant to the Department of Health (DOH) Administrative Order No. 2014-0045, the National Comprehensive Newborn Screening System (NCNSS) has expanded the screening panel of disorders from six (6) to twenty-eight (28) more disorders.

Fad diets feature article 2It's natural for people who are trying to lose weight to want to see the effects as soon as possible. It's not only about sticking to a diet to lose weight in a healthy way, it's about making long-term lifestyle changes that include daily food and activity.

Fad diet is a weight-loss strategy which provides quick results and is usually just a temporary shift in eating habits. These diets are unhealthy since they give people fewer calories and nutrients which is vital in your body.

Most fad diets exclude food items that will offer essential nutrients that your body requires to stay healthy. Diets that are high-fat, low-carbohydrate, or high-protein are some of the examples. Sources of nutrients like grains are eliminated and there are also compounds such as lectins that are removed from these diets.

Article New PNFP for ECCD F1K in LDN22 September 2021, Cagayan de Oro City – In line with the National Nutrition Council (NNC) memorandum signed 17 August 2021, a Provincial Nutrition Focal Point (PNFP) was hired for the Early Childhood Care and Development-First 1000 Days (ECCD-F1K) Program in Lanao del Norte Province.

The PNFP, in the person of Ms. Lizelle L. Bete, RND, will act as the focal person for the Phase 3 and Phase 4 Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program implementation in the said province. The two phases will deliver supplementary feeding program for almost 1,600 children aged 6-23 months old for 180 days.

As new member of the NNC Region 10 team, Nutrition Program Coordinator Gladys Mae S. Fernandez, and Ms. Sheena Marie G. Talle, Nutrition Officer III, oriented PNFP Bete last 20 September 2021 on the overview of NNC, including its mandates, programs, operations, and the roles and responsibilities of a PNFP.

PNFP Bete will conduct facilitation of social preparation activities, coordinate the dietary supplementation component, ensure implementation of the nutrition education and food demonstration component, and facilitate program monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.

The hiring of PNFP for the program in Lanao del Norte warrants better coordination and implementation as NNC aims to provide dietary supplementation to target groups under the First 1000 Days period.

Lanao del Norte is the second province in the region to receive the Tutok Kainan DSP, after Bukidnon. Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon are included as priority provinces under the Human Development and Poverty Reduction Cabinet Cluster (HDPRC). (NO III Sheena Marie G. Talle)

24 Radyo Kalilang Monitoring 202130 September 2021, Cagayan de Oro City – The National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region X conducted its regular monitoring in one of the Nutriskwela Community Radio Stations in the region, namely, Radyo Kalilang DXNN 104.3 FM at Bus Terminal, Kalilangan, Bukidnon on 23 September 2021. Nutrition Officer I Vazamija Therese A. Villasi facilitated the monitoring.

The radio station was off-air since August 2019 due to the damaged transmitter booster, corroded antenna and loose transmission (cable wire) line. Thus, there is a need to replace the damaged equipment. In addition, the walls of the radio station were damaged due to the earthquake that happened in 2017, has not yet been repaired as of this writing. The damaged transmitter was brought to Dumaguete City for repair on 13 July 2020.

The delay of repair and shipment of the transmitter booster were due to the restricted movements imposed by quarantine classifications, increased COVID-19 cases in Dumaguete City, and the required travel protocols such as COVID-19 testing, which would incur additional cost for the technician and his crew. The Local Government Unit of Kalilangan through Mayor Omaradji C. Pizarro committed to explore means to shoulder such expenses.

Radyo Kalilang resumed to air its programs last 27 July 2021. Station equipment such as the audio mixer, microphones, speakers, CD player, external hard drive, computer with monitor, FM stereo radio monitor, printer, headphones are functional and are being used in the station. Currently, Radyo Kalilang is being manned by Station Manager Roger P. Palma and Technician Reches P. Fiola. According to Technician Fiola, the hiring of additional staff and computer repair will be included in the 2022 LGU budget.

As a result of the restrictions of community quarantine and increasing cases of COVID-19, the station was not able to conduct Community Radio Council (CRC) meeting and programming last August 2021.

NNC X adviced Radyo Kalilang to explore the use of online platforms to re-organize the CRC members as well as plan the program schedule. Moreover, NNC X will continue to monitor and provide assistance so the radio station can fulfill its duties of disseminating correct and updated nutrition messages over the municipality of Kalilangan and its nearby areas. National Nutrition Council X

30 September 2021 (Cagayan de Oro City) – National Nutrition Council X joins the observance of Linggo ng Kabataan and International Youth Day with the theme “Transforming Food System: Youth innovation for human and planetary health”.

The celebration honors young Filipino heroes who have made significant contributions to the country's development. “Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan,” (The youth is the hope of our nation), as Dr. Jose Rizal put it.

A youth is defined as anyone between the ages of 15 to 24 years old, regardless of gender. Youths are the backbone of the society and determine the society's future. A handful of responsibilities are in play because their families, communities, and country's future are at the palm of their hands.

Linggo ng Kabataan aims to create safe fora for our youths to communicate with one another given they have already encountered hurdles in terms of employment, drug usage, and HIV/AIDS, but there are ways to resolve these obstacles.
