Infographics F1K Tutukan Infancy

Infancy is one of the critical periods of a growing child due to rapid growth and development. From birth to 6 months, babies must double their weight and triple at 12 months. Thus, babies need lots of nutrients to be able to grow as such.

Infants’ proper nutrition is fundamental for their rapid growth and development. Likewise, correct feeding in this stage plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of illnesses and diseases throughout their life span. And the best source of good nutrition for the first 6 months of life is breastmilk.

Kumainment No. 2 tells us, “Pasusuha ang batang bag-ong natawo gikan sa pagkahimugso ngadto sa unom ka buwan; hatagi usab siya sa saktong pagkaon sugod sa unom ka buwan.” (Breastfeed infants exclusively from birth up to 6 months, then give appropriate complementary foods while continuing breastfeeding for 2 years and beyond.)

F1K Pregnancy 270 daysThe first 1,000 days is a period of great potential as well as great vulnerability. The quality of nutrition and care provided to mothers at this time have significant impact on a child's ability to grow, develop, learn, and survive. The foundations for their lifetime health are laid during this time.

Brain development commence before birth. Early in pregnancy, a child's brain begins to expand and develop at an incredible speed. The fuel that drives much of this remarkable change is the nourishment that a baby receives from his/her mother through her food.

To meet the pregnant mother’s nutritional needs, consuming a variety of foods is a must. An additional 300 calories should be consumed throughout the pregnancy. Both the expectant mother and the baby will benefit more from whole foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats like chicken, fish, and beans, and carbohydrate-rich foods. Protein, iron, folate, and fatty acids, among other nutrients, contribute to the development of a baby's brain health during pregnancy. Junk food and other processed foods must be avoided as much as possible. Chips and soda, to name a few, have no nutritional value.

18 National Lung MonthWe live because we breathe. As a matter of fact, breathing is something that we all do without realizing it. We breathe in and out about 22,000 times a day. That’s a lot of work for a very important part of the body, our lungs.

Lungs are located at either side of the chest. The main function of lungs is to take in oxygen, which all cells throughout the body need to live and carry out their normal functions. It also gets rid of carbon dioxide, a waste product of the body’s cell. This maintains the pH level of blood for the normal function of body organs.

National Lung Month is observed and celebrated every August by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 1761, signed by former President Ferdinand Marcos on 24 July 1978. Its observance is aimed at focusing awareness to contribute to a better and healthier environment, also so that the chemical exchange taking place in the lungs and detoxifying the body is sustained.

National TB Day Inforgraphics

Infectious diseases can jeopardize one’s health. At present and globally, we are combating the dual burden of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the tuberculosis pandemic. Both diseases show similar symptoms, however, tuberculosis has a longer incubation period with slower onset of disease.

Tuberculosis widely known as TB is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis that attacks any part of the body, but the most and often affected are the lungs.

To educate the public on the devastating effect of TB particularly on health, the National TB Day is commemorated yearly on 19 August. TB remains the deadliest infectious disease worldwide. Globally, 1.4 million die due to TB and 10 million are ill that affects 1.2 million children (World Health Organization, 2019). In 2019, the Philippines was among the eight (8) countries worldwide which account for two-thirds of the total TB cases.
