Article SOLNFP Deliberation29 August 2021, Cagayan de Oro City – In a virtual deliberation meeting convened by the National Nutrition Council X, the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) settled and identified this year’s outstanding local nutrition focal points.

This was held last 25 August 2021, attended by five (5) RNET members led by Dr. Arlita Amapola B. Minguez, RNET Chair and CHED 10 representative, and NNC X as Secretariat.

The deliberation focused on the individual scores based on the following metrics: desk review, and interview for all Nutrition Action Officers, Local Nutrition Program Coordinators and Barangay Nutrition Scholars. BNSs’ scores on written exams were also accounted.

The evaluation process is done to assess the performance of frontline nutrition staff in carrying out core functions.

This is the first year that NAOs and LNPCs were evaluated, a milestone in the region’s pursuit of assessing and improving capacities of focal points, who are the main nutrition movers at the ground level.

As part of immediate next steps, NNC X is currently preparing the documents for endorsement to the National Nutrition Evaluation Team. Depending on the NNET’s validation, Region 10’s contenders may vie for the national awards. (NO III Sheena Marie G. Talle)

Article Training on News Article Writing28 August 2021, Cagayan de Oro City – The National Nutrition Council X organized the Training on News Article Writing on 23 August 2021 intended for all of its staff. The virtual training was also opened to nutrition workers from interested provinces, cities and municipalities.

Mr. Edgardo “Gardee” U. Pacalioga, freelance writer and editor and a member of NNC X’s media network, facilitated the training.

During the training, Mr. Pacalioga emphasized on the elements of news writing, drafting the lead of the story, overall structure of a news article, reminders on clear and effective writing, among others.

While the training aims to improve article outputs of staff and nutrition workers, Mr. Pacalioga stated that producing well-written news stories take a lot of practice. The secret to writing good news articles is to write, he said.

A workshop was held to apply the learnings from the lecture, followed by critiquing of outputs by the facilitator.

Nutrition Program Coordinator Gladys Mae S. Fernandez in her closing message thanked Mr. Pacalioga and the participants for taking part in the agency’s pursuit for improved promotion of good nutrition through writing substantive and well-written news contents for webpage and social media outlets.

The First 1000 Days consists of 270 days for the entire duration of pregnancy, 180 days from birth up to six months or infancy, and 550 days from 6 months up to 23 months or older infancy. This period is considered as the golden window of opportunity for lifelong health and productivity.

Six months to 2 years of age is a critical period of a child’s life wherein nutrient deficiencies and illnesses during this stage can contribute significantly to overnutrition or undernutrition, particularly stunting. To protect our children for malnutrition, appropriate complementary feeding is a proven intervention to reduce stunting during the first two years of life.

Article CMU BSND OJT28 August 2021, Cagayan de Oro City – The National Nutrition Council X welcomed two on-the-job trainees from Central Mindanao University last 23 August 2021.

Ms. Keishe Jan T. Aban and Ms. Lorry Jane G. Rumbines, both senior BS Nutrition and Dietetics students, will undergo 300 hours of Public Health Nutrition (PHN) practicum to apply principles and theories on food and nutrition in a community setting. The internship is expected to last until 13 October 2021.

Due to the pandemic setting, activities and other coordination measures will be held virtually.

Both interns will experience the actual nutrition program management cycle through involvement in NNC X’s programs, and barangay-level engagement as well. Various online platforms will be maximized for the interns to be engaged fully in PHN.

The course aims for the students to gain knowledge, develop positive attitudes and skills in applying theories into practical situations in managing community-based nutrition programs, projects and activities within the framework of the local nutrition and development plan.

This is NNC X’s 6th year of accommodating the community nutrition phase of select CMU interns. The agency remains committed to provide a good training ground for future public health nutritionist-dietitians who will help champion nutrition and related advocacies, despite the current challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. FINAL Infographics Landscape ASEANThrough the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established on 8 August 1967. The original declaration was signed by the Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand which was later on joined by Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam; forming the present ASEAN Member States. The association was founded to promote economic, social and cultural development of the region through cooperative programs, to safeguard the political and economic stability of the region, and to serve as a forum to resolve of intra-regional differences.

This year the ASEAN is observing its 54th anniversary under the chairmanship of Brunei Darussalam with the theme, “We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper.” The ASEAN Month Celebration is commemorated every August by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 282 dated 31 July 2017 amending Proclamation No.1008 (s. 1997).

As we celebrate this year’s ASEAN Month, let’s take a look back at the commitments and initiatives of the ASEAN toward a collaborative approach to achieve sustainable food and nutrition security among nations of the region.

MisOcc BFFs(Misamis Occidental PNAO Marichu G. Tijing/Ms. Glady Adlaon) — The Provincial Nutrition Action Office through the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental is in pursuit to actively functionalize the implementation of both nutrition-specific and sensitive programs province-wide, thus alignment of the nutrition laws and policies.

Breastfeeding Support Groups were created through the Executive Order No. 19, s2020 signed by Governor Philip T. Tan last 10 February 2020 entitled: “An order creating the breastfeeding support for the province of Misamis Occidental enacted to All Municipal Mayors, Punong Barangays, Sangguniang Bayan, and Sangguniang Barangay and all concerned agencies”

DOH Administrative Order No. 2005-0014 issued in 2015 serves as a guide for health and nutrition workers and other concerned parties on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF). This includes appropriate feeding practices in exceptionally difficult circumstances and ensuring the protection, promotion and support of exclusive breastfeeding, and timely and adequate complementary feeding with continued breastfeeding.
