Sleep infographicsSleep is as important to food and water especially to a developing child. It has a direct impact on the physical, emotional, and behavioural health of children. A study conducted by Xie et al. (2013) entitled “Sleep Drives Metabolite Clearance from the Adult Brain” shows that sleep has an integral part in brain functions, in fact, recent findings indicate that sleep plays a role in removing toxins build up in the brain.

The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that carries out executive processes such as thinking, decision making, and planning. The brain’s cognitive functions including attention, learning, understanding and memory are all entirely dependent to the functioning of prefrontal cortex. This region of the brain is more active to those who have adequate sleep than to those who under slept. It is also during sleep that the acquired memories, information and skills are transferred and stored to permanent brain regions. Thus, children with adequate sleep are more alert and retains learning or skills over a long period of time.

april 4 129 April 2019, Cagayan de Oro City – Summer is here and there’s no denying the intense heat Northern Mindanaoans experience every day. So how do we beat the summer heat with good nutrition?

During the Radyo Mo Sa Nutrisyon Year 8 Episode 45 last year, UP-PGH Chief Dietitian Emelita O. Lavilla enumerated tips and reminders to stay nutritiously healthy during the summer season.

To maintain hydration, an individual is advised to drink more than the 8-12 glasses of water most especially after meals. This is the recommendation of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology when spending too much time outdoors or being involved in strenuous physical activities. One must keep in mind not to drink water only when thirsty, but make sure that the recommended water intake is attained at the end of the day.

It makes up more than half of a person’s body weight. A person could die as early as two days without water.

According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the heat index in NorMin ranges from 32°C to 41°C. The effects of this heat index in our body needs extreme caution. This could lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion and worse is continuing activity could result heat stroke. Obvious tip to be perceived by the public is: Drink plenty of water regularly, but how plenty is plenty? Does all drink in the liquid form helps us hydrated?

Usually, people are told to drink 6 to 8 glasses each day (3 Liters for men and 2.2 Liters for women).  That is reasonable but let’s take consideration that different people need different amounts of water in their body due to age, gender, weight, climate, activity levels, and overall health. Especially this summer, staying hydrated under the extreme heat can be very challenging compared to cooler environment temperature. This is because we lose a significant amount of fluid through sweating.
