MAMBAJAO, Camiguin, August 25 (PIA) – The provincial leadership here issued a strong policy pronouncement to reduce malnutrition rate to three percent among under-five children (0-71 months) in 2016.
Governor Jurdin Jesus M. Romualdo uttered the commitment during the recent conduct of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) on nutrition, in which the province, including two towns and five barangays we’re subjected to the evaluation conducted by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET).
Camiguin reported an improved nutritional status of underweight and severely underweight children, based on the Operation Timbang (OPT) or weighting result, the province noted a 7.15 percent malnutrition rate in 2012 to only 5.88 percent in 2014.
Romualdo noted that it would had been easier to target lower than three percent, if the data does not include the other side face of malnutrition, which is obesity.
When it comes to over nutrition, Camiguin reflected a 1.03 percent rate, ranking 4th in the region. Lanao del Norte with 1.80 percent, Misamis Occidental with 1.59 percent, Misamis Oriental with 1.11percent and Bukidnon with .54 percent. The rates are all increasing except for the province as it reflected 0.03 percent decrease from 2013.
To achieve its target, the provincial and municipal LGUs have been initiating various program in support to nutrition from learning sessions to feeding, and livelihood assistance to priority families with identified malnourished children. (JCV/RTWG/PIA10)

In its continuing support in promoting good nutrition in Northern Mindnao, the Regional Development Council X approved for adoption the Nutritional Guidelines for Muslim Filipinos (NGMF) during its 105th Full Council Meeting held last August 20 at the Mindanao Civic Center Hotel, Tubod, Lanao del Norte. The adoption was led by RDC X Chairperson Governor Khalid Q. Dimaporo with Mayor Nelieta Q. Noval presenting the agenda. Along with the NGMF, the Committee also approved the promotion of 10 Kumainments and Pinggang Pinoy as part of the IEC and advocacy of the 2012 Revised Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos to lend greater support and wider dissemination in the region.
Similar to the RDC adoption of the 2012 Revised NGF with its Visayan translation (through Resolution No. 41 s. 2014), the newly adopted 10 Kumainments was translated into Visayan for easier message recall and retention.
Prior to the RDC meeting, the ceremonial turn-over of check for Complementary Food in Tubod, Lanao del Norte was held with DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo personally handing over the dummy check to Gov. Khalid Q. Dimaporo and Tubod Mayor Nelieta Q. Noval. The DOST support amounts to more than ?1.5M. mdmn

Three nutrition focused agenda will be presented and discussed during the Third Quarter Social Development Committee (SDC X) Meeting on August 6, 2015. This is a manifestation of the strong support being extended by SDC X on nutrition recognizing the need to address hunger and malnutrition in the region through the promotion of good nutrition.
Included in the meeting’s agenda will be the 10 Kumainments, Pinggang Pinoy and the Nutritional Guidelines for Muslim Filipinos (NGF-MF). Secretary Kadil M. Sinolinding, Jr. of DOH-ARMM and OIC-NPC of NNC ARMM also a major figure in the development of the NGF for Muslim Filipinos was invited to present the agenda. SDC X looks forward to vigorously push for the promotion and adoption of the NGF-MF especially among the Muslim communities in Northern Mindanao. All these agenda will be elevated to the Regional Development Committee X for advocacy and support.
SDC X as a platform for nutrition advocacy has consistently supported the Regional Nutrition Committee X through the National Nutrition Council X. A total of five nutrition focused RDC X Resolutions have been passed since 2014 up to May 2015 facilitated by SDC X. This includes RDC-X Resolution 41 (s. 2014) adopting the 2012 Revised Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos and its Visayan Translation. mdmn

The City of Oroquieta through the Sangguniang Panglungsod of Oroquieta City chaired by the City Vice Mayor Hon. Harry J. Guantero and City Mayor Hon. Jason P. Almonte passed on July 9, 2015 City Ordinance No. 617-2015 known as OROQUIETA CITY COMPREHENSIVE NUTRITION PROGRAM ORDINANCE.
Authored by Hon. Jesselie Borbon, Committee on Health Chairperson the Ordinance establishes a comprehensive nutrition program and appropriates funds to improve the child and maternal nutritional status towards achievement of the MDGs. The ordinance recognizes that all nutrition interventions shall be a mode in improving the quality of life of individuals in the city specifically to help the people especially those who are unable to enjoy the right to good nutrition to provide their nutritional needs. The ordinance also aims to uphold implementation of the nutrition program and services which the City Government through the City Health Office.
The City Government also intends to set up a separate Nutrition Office later to ensure that the Comprehensive Program on Nutrition will be effectively and efficiently implemented. hge

Hon. Governor Herminia M. Ramiro signed and on June 23, 2015 Executive Order No. 35-2015 – CREATING THE PROVINCIAL NUTRITION LOBBY TEAM TO EXPEDITE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE OBJECTIVES EMBODIED IN EXECUTIVE ORDER NO.-02-2014. The Provincial Nutrition Committee is mandated as the lead implementor of the Governor’s directive and is tasked to formulate policies and guidelines, monitor and evaluate the progress of the nutrition program in the whole Province. EO No. 02-2014 was earlier issued by Gov. Ramiro creating the Provincial Nutrition Committee and calling on all municipalities and barangays to organize the same to collectively achieve set nutrition targets.
The Governor also ordered the LOBBY TEAM to closely work and coordinate with the Mayors, Punong Barangay, their respective Sanggunian and all stakeholders to fully support, reinforce, supplement and vigorously implement the provincial nutrition program. Among the pioneering work of the Lobby Team is the upcoming initial purchase of balance beam weighing scales (Detecto) to replace the bathroom weighing scales being used for the nutritional assessment of school children.
Misamis Occidental now carries the “One Province in Nutrition” movement through the issuance of the E.O 35 that will unify the efforts of all stakeholders in addressing the problem of hunger and malnutrition in the Province. Misamis Occidental, likewise, is the first Province to cascade Northern Mindanao’s social movement of “One Region in Nutrition”.hge

Valencia City Nutrition Committee together with Muslim Religious Leader Abdul Pata led the launch of the Nutritional Guidelines for Muslim Filipinos (transliteration)to ensure the City-wide promotion of proper nutrition and adoption of healthy lifestyle among Muslim Filipinos in the City. The said launch was done side by side with the unveiling of the City’s 2015 Innovative Nutrition Projects this time led by City Councilor on Health Hon. Policarpio V. Murillo IV, with other members of the Sangguniang Panglungsod.
The Mayor's GIFT (Garden Innovations on Food Technology), putting up of the NUTRILAND, CNC Communal Garden, Search for Healthiest Weight Loser-Kids Edition Season 1, Healthiest Loser Season 4, Enhanced Selopin ko Panginabuhi ko Livelihood Project were among the innovative programs launched.
The launch highlighted the Nutrition Month Kick Off Celebration of Valencia City and the Regional Nutrition Committee X held last July 1. A “Nutri-Family Run” and Amazing Nutritious Race was conducted which sought to promote the importance of physical activity to prevent overweight and obesity. A total of 1,168 constituents of Valencia City including children, youth, and senior citizens participated in the kick-off activities. hge
