Memorandum Circular 2014-25 signed by DILG Secretary Mar Roxas dated February 25, 2014. 28 March 2014 – All Provincial Governors, City and Municipal Mayors, Punong Barangays and ARMM Regional Governor are encouraged to support the promotion of the 2012 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos per Memorandum Circular 2014-25 signed by DILG Secretary Mar Roxas dated February 25, 2014. The support may be in the form of:

  • http://old.nnc.gov.ph/plugins/system/jat3/base-themes/default/images/bullet.gif) 20px 7px no-repeat;">Production and deployment of relevant information, education and communication materials, preferably in the local dialect; and engage the local authorities sector for the production and/or ensuring the availability of nutritious and safe foods.

The new NGF is primary recommendations to promote good health through proper nutrition. The guidelines include food-based and behavior-driven messages and addresses current nutritional and dietary problems. It serves as a tool for nutrition education, promotion of desirable dietary and nutrition habits. As such, the messages have to be promoted nationwide in the country.

Director Rene K. Burdeos, Regional Director of DILG Region 10, on the other hand, instructed all Region X DILG Provincial Directors in his letter dated 5 March 2014 following the directive of Sec. Roxas.

April 3, 2014 - A total of 17,524 severely wasted school children in Kinder to Grade 6 of Region 10 will benefit from DepEd's School Based Feeding Program (SBFP) starting this July with a total funding of over 33M.

This is one of the newest and expanded features of the SBFP for SY 2014-2015 as disclosed by Dr. Ella Naliponguit, Director of DepEd's Health and Nutrition Center during the Mindanao Cluster SBFP Planning Workshop held at the Regional Learning Center, Cagayan de Oro City. Among others, SBFP shall be done for 120 days following the standardized malunggay based recipes and 20 days cycle menu utilizing locally produced or grown foods. The SBFP nationwide implementation is funded under the GAA amounting 1,079,543,040.00 in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

.The new SBFP will also be implemented with a component on Partnership Building and Creation of Local Alliances.  During the workshop, NPC Navales underscored the importance of tapping the already existing Local Nutrition Committees from the provincial to barangay levels for the purpose.  NPC Navales also requested DepEd to consider these structures as part of the enhancement of the implementation and partrship arrangements of the SBFP which was welcomed by Dr. Corazon on Dumlao of HNC DepEd.

1996 NOBNS  Hon. Marivic Monstesclaros during the First BNS Regional Conference attended by over a thousand BNS from region 10.Over a thousand Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) of Region 10 convened during the First Regional BNS Conference organized by the National Barangay Nutrition Scholars Federation Inc., Northern - Mindanao Chapter held on September 10, 2015 at the Dynasty Court Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. With the theme Sa Tanang Panahon BNS Andam sa Pag-alagad, the conference is aimed to strengthen relationships among the BNSes in the region and increase public awareness on the critical role of BNSes in nutrition improvement in the region.

The highlight of the conference that stirred the crowd was the keynote message delivered by Hon. Marivic R. Montesclaros who was Northern Mindanao’s first National Outstanding BNS awarded in 1996 and now Provincial Board Member of Bukidnon.  In her speech which she tagged as “THROW BACK THURSDAY, July 29, 1996”, she described her life as a BNS being full of challenges which she was able to overcome because of commitment and being hands-on in all the activities that a BNS is tasked to do.  She also shared that bagging the 1995 NOBNS Award, is a product of true and dedicated service. As old happy memories feel her heart during the Conference, with teary eyes, she read her acceptance speech (the original copy of which she still keeps) which she delivered at the Bureau of Soils (Quezon City) 20 years back.

“Let us work together to improve the nutrition situation of Cagayan de Oro City”.  This was disclosed by Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno during the courtesy call of NPC Marissa Navales held April 25, 2014 at the City Mayor’s Office.

Mayor Moreno was alarmed when NPC Navales presented to him the 2011-2013 OPT results of Cagayan de Oro that showed increasing prevalence of malnutrition over the years.  He said that the City needs to strategize on how the nutrition gaps can be addressed.  Both the Mayor and NPC Navales agreed to immediately schedule a strategizing meeting to be attended personally by the Mayor together with the City Health Office, the City Nutrition Office and NNC X.

 

The Region-wide Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation 2014 commenced Last April with the deployment of Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team 10 (RNET), headed by Chairperson Ms Marietta V Deiparine .

The Team prioritized the visit to the Region’s contenders for the First Year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner for Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance Award – City of Valencia last April 10-11 and Province of Misamis Oriental last May 19-22 respectively. The RNET visit is part of the preparations for the National Evaluation to take place.

The Annual RNET 10 deployment is one of the efforts of the Regional Nutrition Committee X (RNC-X) to assess the nutrition situation of the community as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of nutrition program implementation of the LGUs. It is also a way of appreciating the time, efforts, and resources provided by Local Implementers to nutrition programs more significantly. MELLPI has been utilized as a mechanism in motivating LGUs to continually support nutrition programs in order to address malnutrition in their respective areas.

Media partners present during the meeting, including CDO Bloggers Inc., concurred to the MANGO Diez Terms of Reference and pledged commitment and support to be part of the media consortium.

Dr. Adriano Subaan, Assistant Regional Director of DOH – RO X graced the event and gave an empowering message - “We, the duty bearers, need MANGO DIEZ. We need you to help us inform our local residents so as to move them to participate in our nutrition activities in a way that will lead them to enjoy the right to good nutrition. After all this right is for all Filipinos and not only for a few.”

NPC Marissa DM. Navales, on the other hand, called on the quad media to help NNC put malnutrition in the public debate.

Director Thelma B. Oliver of PIA X stressed the need to maximize the potential of social media: reason why the new term “quad media” emerged.
