ro10 rbatf 2015 nm gain sdcx supportThe Social Development Committee of Northern Mindanao during its May 12 meeting resolved to support the reactivation/reorganization of the Region X Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF) and the strengthening of the institutionalization of the celebration of the 2015 Nutrition Month. Both agenda will be elevated to the Regional Development Council for support and advocacy.

Upon request of NNC X, the body will endorse to the RDC X the following action points relative to the RBATF reactivation:

1)Enjoin the member agencies to actively undertake their functions

2)Call on the organization of Local Bantay Asin Task Forces and shall utilize the exiting local bodies and committees such as the Local Nutrition Committees to streamline functions and ensure convergence of resources

ro10 mis occ unites niIn a move to unify action in addressing malnutrition in Misamis Occidental, Hon. Governor Herminia M. Ramiro signed and approved Resolution No. 161-15 – Urging All Local Chief Executives in Cities, Municipalities and Barangays in the Province of Misamis Occidental to Reorganize and Strengthen their Respective Nutrition Committees.

The resolution, authored and introduced by Board Member Hon. Gerard Teodorico R. Olegario II, supports the major thrust of the Provincial Government in strengthening the delivery of basic nutrition and other health-related services as embodied in the Provincial Nutrition Action Plan. Moreover, the issuance of the Resolution necessitates the revitalization of the local nutrition committees to give the much needed support in responsibly and effectively implementing the nutrition programs and projects of the Province. mdmn

 ro10 doh dilg head 2015 rnetThe Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) X voted Ms. Telesfora G. Madelo, ND IV of the DOH-ROX and Ms. Blanche Villamor, LGOO V of DILG X as Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the 2015 Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) X, respectively. The RNET X will undertake this year’s Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) and Search for Northern Mindanao Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (OBNS) starting April 15.

The 2015 RNET X was constituted during the RTWG Special Meeting on April 7, 2015 at Middleton Apartelle, Cagayan de Oro City. Chairperson and Vice-chairperson are elected among its member to ensure that the monitoring and evaluation activities are carried out as planned. RNET X welcomes the participation of new member agencies including NCIP and CHED. Guest evaluators coming from NHA recipients will also join the Team.

The current leadership of the RNET is consistent with that of the RNC’s. Ms. Madelo and Ms. Villamor replace Ms. Marietta Deiparine and Ms. Eva Pacturan of DA who has both serve as Chair and Vice Chair of the RNET for more than 5 years. sfp

ro10 lanao del norte revives bns programThe Province of Lanao del Norte is set to conduct a series of capacity building among newly appointed Barangay Nutrition Scholars for all its 22 municipalities.  An orientation on Nutrition in Emergencies will also be integrated in the training as part of their Provincial Nutrition Cluster’s NiEm initiatives.

Three batches of Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars will be conducted on May 13-15, May 27-29 and June 3-5, with Lala and Maigo as the training venues. The training is part of the commitments of the Province of Lanao del Norte in revitalizing and strengthening its nutrition programs, particularly the BNS Program, after undertaking a Local Nutrition Planning workshop in November 2014. Executive Order No. 9 series of 2014 was signed by Governor Khalid Q. Dimaporo organizing its Provincial Nutrition Cluster.

NNC X is assisting the Provincial Nutrition Committee in mobilizing trained facilitators from other provinces and cities for the said trainings.  srdc

ro10 gp talakayan pia“The salt used by households in Northern Mindanao is not adequately iodized”. This was disclosed by NNC X Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Marissa DM. Navales during a Talakayan sa PIA citing the results of the 2013 National Nutrition Survey.

NPC Navales said that based on the survey, the iodine level of salt at households in Northern Mindanao is only 6.7 parts per million (ppm) way below the 15 ppm standards. This will require a collective effort among LGUs, regulation offices, local salt producers and manufacturers to ensure only adequately iodized salt reaches the households.

Ms. Juliet Bingona, FDA Regulation Officer, said that the iodine level of salt in Northern Mindanao will now be easily tested and monitored with the availability of the WYD equipment at the regional and provincial level.

Ms. Telesfora Madelo added that the Talakayan was sponsored by DOH RO X to drumbeat this year’s Garantisadong Pambata with IDD as one of the concerns being addressed.

Ms. Karen Yee of DOH X also discussed the pneumococcal vaccine for six weeks to 11 months old babies to be dispensed by DOH X for free through a simultaneous launch on April 15. mdmn

ro10 gov ramiro organizes bantay asinGovernor Herminia M. Ramiro alarmed over the iodine deficiency disorder situation of Misamis Occidental issued in March 23, 2015 Executive Order 12-2015 on the “Organization of the Provincial Bantay Asin Task Force” to ensure the supply and distribution of only adequate iodized salt within the province.  The action came following the conduct of the Regional Bantay Asin Task Force Forum aimed at strengthening the implementation of the R.A 8172 commonly known as the “ASIN Law”.

According to the 8th National Nutrition Survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), Misamis Occidental registered 94 µg/L UIE level of among 6-12 years old children indicating mild iodine deficiency.  

The E.O aims to manage and coordinate the National Salt Iodization Program (NSIP), lead in advocacy in the province for the effective implementation of the ASIN LAW including ensuring sustainable support to the program.  Gov. Ramiro also ordered the monitoring and evaluation of program implementation to immediately address the malnutrition problem of the province. hge
