DAVAO CITY, April 22 (PIA) -- The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG XI), through a memorandum, has provided the Department of Health (DOH) approved set of guidelines for the nutrition cluster in Region XI.
The said guidelines are designed to provide communities all over the region with proper nutrition by advising all local government units, non-government organizations, business companies, and other civic-oriented organizations providing nutrition services to provide food relief assistance that is well-balanced and high in nutrition value.
In an advisory provided by the National Nutrition Cluster, the guidelines approved by the DOH for the proper implementation of relief efforts by all nutrition service providers call for a more impactful approach in addressing the needs of communities within the Davao Region.

DAVAO CITY — The National Nutrition Council (NNC) 11 has renewed its reminder to the public that a “no-milk” donation policy is being imposed amid the community quarantine due to the COVID-19 crisis.
NNC 11 program head Maria Teresa Ungson told the Mirror that in compliance with Executive Order (EO) 51 or The Philippine Milk Code and its Revised Implementing Rules and Regulations, donations of breast milk substitutes are not allowed and should not be part of general distribution of emergency food packs on any disaster and calamity such as COVID-19.

Last February 27-28, 2020, the National Nutrition Council XI represented by NO II Fernandez conducted its 1st quarterly monitoring visit and technical assistance to the two nutriskwela community radio stations of Davao Region, 97.3 Radyo Kalumonan of San Isidro, Davao Oriental and 101.3 Radyo Kahimunan of Laak, Davao de Oro. This is to assess the current programming and to update the technical operations of the stations.

Barangay Nutrition Frontline Workers otherwise known as Barangay Nutrition Scholars were capacitated to assist the Barangay Nutrition Committee in the management, coordination, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of the barangay nutrition programs. A total of 30 newly appointed and existing Barangay Nutrition Scholars from 30 Barangays of Municipality of Malita, Davao Occidental undergone a 4-day Training on Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars last March 3 to 6, 2020 at Jill’s Garden, Malita, Davao Occidental.
Mr. Abdul Rahman M. Yahya reiterated during his Message that the Local Government Unit of Malita through the Local Nutrition Committee Chaired by Mayor Bradley Bautista invested on this training to equip the newly appointed BNS frontline workers with skills and knowledge to become efficient and effective in the coordination, delivery and implementation of basic nutrition and health service interventions in their respective barangays. Each BNS participant were provided with a BNS kits containing a BNS handbook, BNS shirt, and some reference materials. Further, he stressed that the BNSs role in the implementation of nutrition program in the locality is vital to uplift the nutrition condition of the vulnerable group considering that cases of stunting and wasting is notably high in the locality. He added that through the BNS training they will be guided on the basic roles of a BNS from data generation through OPT Plus using the electronic OPT Plus tool; follow up monitoring of wasted, stunted and underweight preschool children through growth monitoring; campaign on the importance of breastfeeding and timely and appropriate complementary feeding; referral of cases of undernourished children, pregnant women and lactating mothers, among others. Furthermore, he concluded that the BNSs should work closely with other frontline workers in the community to carry out other functions for the delivery of other health and nutrition services e.g. Dietary Supplementation Program for pregnant women considering that the LGU of Malita is one of the ECCD-F1K areas in the province.

Dr. Eadara Shrikanth, TAN Asia Project Manager and Dr. Sahota Rupinder, Project Officer from Nutrition International - Technical Assistance for Nutrition (NI-TAN) conducted the progress assessment in relation to the project “Support to Scaling up Rice Fortification and Distribution with the Social Safety Net Program (SSNP) in the Philippines”. This project started on August 2017 – February 2018 and aims to support the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in scaling up rice fortification programme under the SSNP in the Philippines. This Technical Assistance by the Nutrition International is expected to bring a significant contribution to the Philippines government’s ability to design the national level policy and programme guidance for scale up of rice fortification intervention.
The progress assessment conducted last February 24, 2020 at the Provincial Government Office, Province of Davao de Oro was participated by Davao de Oro’s iRice task force composed of different agencies namely NFA, DepEd, Gawad Kalinga-kusina ng kalinga, PLGU, PHO, DOST, SP, DTI, and PNC. The assessment focused on what had emerged after the technical assistance, the problems and challenges faced, and the future plans for the food fortification program in the province.

Did you know that our favorite Banana Ketchup was actually invented by a Filipina? She was born in the heritage town of Taal, Batangas on November 29, 1893: Maria Ylagan Orosa. She was a food technologist, pharmaceutical chemist, humanitarian and war heroine who invented calamansi juice powder, banana ketchup, soyalac, and two breeds of fruit-plants called oroval and clarosa.
She was only 29 years old in the year 1922, when she worked for the government as the country’s foremost chemist. By 1928, the government was so impressed with her work that they sent her to Holland, England, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Hawaii to study food technology and food preservation. She became part of the Bureau of Science and the Bureau of Plant Industry.
