A series of earthquakes struck Southern Mindanao. The latest earthquake was on December 15, 2019 with a magnitude of 6.8 that affected a large number of families in Davao del Sur. As per record, the recent earthquake was the fourth earthquake incidence in Mindanao with a magnitude of above 6 in the past 2 months with the first incidence occurring last October 16, 2019 with a magnitude of 6.3, respectively.   The impact resulted to major and minor damage of households and infrastructures as well as livelihood in selected areas of the province. Families affected are temporarily sheltered at the evacuation sites with installed tents. The deployment of the Regional Nutrition Cluster team facilitates the assessment of the situation of the vulnerable group in the evacuation centers particularly the pregnant women and lactating mothers, infants and preschool children.

Lakbay Aral Wynward Dec 2019 PICDecember 27, 2019 – Before the New Year’s vacation, NNC XI team goes organic by spending an educational tour at the Wynward Valley Organic Garden Bistro-Davao City, a restaurant that promotes urban gardening and organic way of growing spices, fruits and vegetables, owned by Chef Rodelio Carmelo F. Dalisay,  a full-fledged Dabaweṅo, earned his doctorate degree in Plant Pathology with cognates in Plant Biochemistry and Plant Breeding at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky, USA. The team was introduced to some popular herbs and spices like Kale, Rosemary, Tarragon, Basil and Blue Ternate.

This July 2018, the 44th Nutrition Month celebration focus is on food gardening with the theme: “Ugaliing magtanim, Sapat na nutrisyon aanihin. The campaign aims to contribute to the improvement of the nutritional status of Filipinos through improved food access and encourage the development of food gardens among families and in communities and mobilize various stakeholders to provide a fostering environment for sustainable food gardens.

The National Nutrition Council XI conducted its 1st Regional Nutrition Conference last July 25, 2018 at CCFC Building, Ateneo de Davao University in partnership with Brahma Kumaris. The said conference was attended by representatives from various Government Sectors, Local Media Partners, Sangguniang Kabataan members, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, students from Ateneo de Davao University and University of Immaculate Concepcion as its primary target is the youth sector.

The participants were officially welcomed by Atty. Niceforo Solis, Jr., Director of Ateneo de Davao University followed by an Inspirational message from Dr. Azucena M. Dayanghirang, NNC Deputy Executive Director who discussed the Nutrition Month theme 2018 emphasizing the benefits of Home Food Gardening. The event was also graced by Bro. Yogesh Sharda, Country Director, Brahma Kumaris – Turkey with his topic: Healthy Mind, Healthy Body. The Program Head on Nutrition and Dietetics of the University of Immaculate Concepcion, Mr. Jason O. Molina, RND, MAEM also presented the Nutritive and Non-nutritive Benefits from Home Food Garden Veggies.

NNC XI also invited Ms. Lorna D. Alderite, Senior Agriculturist - City Agriculturist Office, Davao City to report about the basics of vegetable gardening, key cultural practices, and cultural management. This aims to contribute to the basic preparation of starting a home food garden. And lastly, Prof. Rodelio Dalisay of Ateneo de Davao University discussed about Vegetable Agri-business and urban home food gardening.

The activity was closed by NPC/Dr. Maria Teresa L. Ungson and the participants signified their support to the cause by signing the pledge of commitment board.

The 9th National Conference of Nutriskwela Community Radio Network Program was conducted last January 15-17, 2019 at the Mansion Iloilo City. Organized by National Nutrition Council and MQ Media Zone Production and attended by 44 Nutriskwela Community Radio Stations all over the country including 97.3 Radyo Kalumonan, San Isidro, Davao Oriental and 101.3 Radyo Kahimunan, Laak Compostela Valley both from Davao Region.

On the 1st Day of the conference, Ms. Jovita B. Raval, Nutrition Officer V and Chief of the Nutrition Information and Education Division of NNC, discussed the Updates of the Nutriskwela Community Radio Network Program highlighting the plan of NNC and MQ Media Zone Production of conduct a training of station personnel. 20 slots for station personnel allotted to join the national training for expansion areas. Radyo Kahimunan of Laak, ComVal was included to the list of Radio Stations who were qualified per NTC Technical Evaluation of upgrading transmitters from 100 watts to 300 watts. Mr. Salunga on his presentation, discussed the OPT Plus and the trends in the Nutrition Status of Areas with Nutriskwela Community Radio Station. 97.3 Radyo Kalumonan of Nutriskwela Phase 2 showed a great decrease in number of Underweight from 2008 to 2018. While 101.3 Radyo Kahimunan of Nutriskwela Phase 5 also showed a great decrease in number of Stunting and Underweight from 2015 to 2017.

On the 2nd Day of the conference, all the delegates traveled to Sibalom, Antique, to visit 88.5 Radyo Kaabyanan as part of their Radio Tour activity and bench marking. The Regional Director of National Telecommunications Commission Regional Office VI, Mr. Nestor Antonio P. Monroy, was also invited to talk about Rules and Regulations on Radio Broadcast.

The highlight of the National Conference of Nutriskwela was the Annual Awarding of outstanding performers from individual category to per station performances participated by the Nutriskwela Community Radio Stations who submitted their entries. Luckily, Juliet Mendoza A.K.A Ate Pichay of 97.3 Radyo Kalumonan, managed to be a finalist on the Best Female Broadcaster Category.

In line with this year’s theme, “Ugaliing magtanim, sapat na nutrisyon aanihin!” The National Nutrition Council Region XI has chosen Wynward Garden Bistro as the launching venue for it offers a garden-to-kitchen organic food-eating experience. The event was conducted on July 2, 2018 and participated by members of the Regional Nutrition Committee composed of Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) representing their offices, NGOs, and local media groups.
The launch started with a welcome address by Dr. Maria Teresa L. Ungson, the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of the National Nutrition Council XI discussing the benefits of having a home food garden in every household that aside from supplying our body’s daily need for nutrition, it is also economical. One of the highlights of the launch was the live cooking demo (Chicken Pesto Pasta) by Chef Rodelio Carmelo F. Dalisay, lifestyle chef, Professor, and the propietor of Wynward Garden Bistro. He demonstrated the right method of cooking vegetable dish and gave tips on how to maximize the ingredients available around the bistro followed by a ceremonial toast with an organic cocktail (Lemon grass-ginger juice) also prepared by Chef Melo. Everyone was encouraged to be a part of the Council’s mission of promulgating good and proper nutrition, and participants signed on the wall of the Pledge of Commitment.
Wynward Garden Bistro is proud to support the growing trend of Filipinos wanting to have a healthy lifestyle, more are being selective in eating healthy food by preferring naturally or organically grown food. It is located at Dalisay Compound, Bajada, Davao City.

             Ms. Luz Elda Ramos of DA XI administered the desk review of ECCD F1K documents at the barangay level.                                      

The inter-agency Regional Technical Assistance Monitoring and Evaluation (TAME) Team conducted a 4-day monitoring and evaluation visit to the Early Childhood Care and Development-First 1000 Days (ECCD-F1K) areas in the Province of Davao del Sur last January 28 to 31, 2019. The purpose of the monitoring visit is to assess and validate the status of ECCD-F1K program implementation; identify challenges encountered; determine good practices and innovations; and provide technical assistance to ECCD-F1K program implementers in terms of planning, generation of data on nutrition, updating of the masterlist of beneficiaries; preparation and submission of nutrition reports, skills enhancement on nutrition counselling, nutrition education and nutrition assessment, among others.

The TAME Team was led by Ms. Grace Elsa Albano, ND IV of the Department of Health XI with TAME team members from the Department of Agriculture XI represented by Ms. Luz Elda Ramos, Institutional Development Section Head and Ms. Charlotte Lumantas of the Department of Social Welfare and Development XI. The Regional TAME Team was assisted by Retsebeth M. Laquihon, Nutrition Officer III and Ms. Alma Cosico, ECCD-F1K Provincial Nutrition Coordinator for Davao del Sur. Among the areas visited are the Province of Davao del Sur through the Provincial Nutrition Office, City of Digos and municipalities of Hagonoy and Magsaysay, respectively. A total 7 barangays were visited at 2-3 barangays per ECCD-F1K areas.
