Cough and colds imageCoughs and colds are caused by germs called virus which infect the nose and throat. Viruses are passed on by coughing and sneezing into the air.

 

Cold is a mild viral infection which is very common and clears up on its own within a week or two.  The main symptoms are sore throat, runny nose, sneezing and cough.

 

Fever usually doesn’t occur in colds but with a more severe symptoms including high fever, headache and aching muscles may be a sign that there’s a bacterial infection or you got flu.

 

In children, there are some symptoms that should be look for as sometimes a more serious infection may develop caused by an initial viral infection. Among those are ear infection, chest infection or pneumonia, others are breathing problems such as wheeziness, fast breathing, and noisy or difficulty with breathing.

Based on WHO estimates, more than 17.5 million people died of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack or stroke in 2012. Contrary to popular belief, more than 3 out of 4 of these deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries, and men and women were equally affected.

Foods good for the heart:

Fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids which help to reduce blood pressure, regulate heartbeat and decreases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Vegetables which are packed with vitamins, fiber and carotenoids like carrots, red peppers, sweet potatoes and acorn squash must be consumed.

Fruits rich in fiber, beta-carotene, potassium and magnesium such as papaya, orange and cantaloupes are good for the heart including strawberries, raspberries, cranberries and blueberries which high in soluble fiber and phytonutrients.

Dark chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa are essential for the heart health.

The NEA AGUILA ONSE media group aims to strengthen and sustain the campaign on good nutrition and healthy lifestyle in the region through multimedia including radio, print, TV and social media to increase public’s awareness on the importance of good nutrition that will facilitate change of behavior towards good nutrition practices.

dengue article photoIt’s rainy season again and mosquitoes possibly lay their eggs on old tires, flower vases, cans, stagnant waters and depending on their breeding sites per region and therefore it must be cleaned.

According to World Health Organization, dengue is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito infected with one of the four dengue virus serotypes. It is a febrile illness that affects infants, young children and adults with symptoms appearing 3-14 days after the infective bite.

 

As to the Department of Health, the following are the signs and symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic fever:

  • Sudden onset of high fever which may last 2 to 7 days
  • Joint & muscle pain and pain behind the eyes
  • Weakness
  • Skin rashes - maculopapular rash or red tiny spots on the skin called petechiae
  • Nose bleeding when fever starts to subside
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting of coffee-colored matter
  • Dark-colored stools
  • Cover water drums and water pails at all times to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
  • Replace water in flower vases once a week.
  • Clean all water containers once a week. Scrub the sides well to remove eggs of mosquitoes sticking to the sides.
  • Clean gutters of leaves and debris so that rain water will not collect as breeding places of mosquitoes.
  • Old tires used as roof support should be punctured or cut to avoid accumulation of water.
  • Collect and dispose all unusable tin cans, jars, bottles and other items that can collect and hold water.

Davao City – Deserving Nutrition Workers in Region XI have been awarded for the CY 2014 implementation of Nutrition Program last November 19, 2015 at the Grand Men Seng Hotel, Davao City. It was attended by the different nutrition partners from Regional Nutrition Committee XI (RNC XI) and the Local Government Units (LGUs) of the region. Also on the said event, the new Sakto Seal sa Asin was launched.

The awards that have given were based on the 2014 performance of the LGUs who participated in the annual Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI). In giving recognition to the LGUs who have exhibited exemplary performance in the management of their nutrition programs, Nutrition Program Coordinator Dr. Maria Teresa L. Ungson led the awarding which was assisted by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET): Ms. Grace Elsa B. Albano from the Department of Health XI, Ms. Nemia Lumaino from the Department of Trade and Industry and Ms. Carolina Armada from the Department of Budget and Management – to be part of the congratulatory board.

One of the awards that were given for the LGUs is the 2014 Regional Green Banner Award given to the province, city and municipality that has been ranked as the first or represents the best in the region for their performance in the year 2014. This award was given to TAGUM CITY (City Level)and was received by Mayor Allan L. Rellon and City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO) Dr. Arnel Florendo; and to the Municipality of MAWAB, COMPOSTELA VALLEY (Municipality Level) which was received by Mayor Evalina Jampayas and Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) Manolito Cuasito. Also, the 2014 Provincial Green Banner Award was given to the Municipality of HAGONOY, DAVAO DEL SUR and received by Mayor Franco Calida and Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) Dr. Azucena Dayanghirang.

The Kaugmaon Award, is an award only given in Davao Region.  This award is given to the LGU who has improved and performed well and shows promise in the years to come.  For 2014 performance,the Municipality of KAPALONG, DAVAO DEL NORTE has proved to be a fighter and withstood challenges in their nutrition program that also ranked second best during the MELLPI visits. The award was received by Vice-Mayor Teresita Timbol and MNAO Edwin Ganiera.

Adding to list of awards for the LGU is the Pag-asa Award which is given to an LGU in recognition for its notable achievement with regards to achieving the highest average reduction in malnutrition among preschool children based on Operation Timbang Results and was given to the Municipality of Mawab, Compostela Valley.

Moving on to the individual awards, the Search for the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (ROBNS) is done annually.  A total of 5 BNSs were evaluated by the RNET this year, and among them, BNS Evangeline P. Orais of Barangay Visayan Village, Tagum City was chosen as the 2014 Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar. The second place went to BNS Regina P. Dellosa of Barangay Camudmud, Island Garden City of Samal; placing on third is BNS Ronela Q. Villacas of Bgy. Bawani, Mawab, Compostela Valley. Also, BNS Socorro Jean A. Sigasig of Barangay Buhangin Proper, Davao Cityand BNS Ester M. Arganda of Barangay Sinayawan, Hagonoy, Davao del Sur were awarded as Provincial Outstanding BNS of their respective provinces.

The launching of the adequately-iodized salt quality seal, dubbed as “Saktong Iodine sa Asin”, was developed mainly to strengthen and revitalize the existing Diamond Sangkap Pinoy Seal used in the labels of iodized salt. This adequately-iodized salt seal aims to increase awareness and use of adequately-iodized salt in households and point of purchase. The quality seal will serve as guide to consumers in identifying and purchasing adequately-iodized salt. RNPC Dr. Ungson added insights about  the importance of the amount of iodine intake in every child and even adults.

This is just a simple manifestation that the Davao Region is moving forward to a more healthy population with their rising dedication to nutrition.

2016 rnacDavao City - Last December 16, 2016, the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony was conducted by the National Nutrition Council XI headed by the good Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Dr. Maria Teresa L. Ungson. The awarding was attended by 142 participants from different LGUs, stakeholders, partners from NGAs, NGOs and academe. Also present was the BNS national president Ms. Jocelyn Lumaad and the newly elected NAOPA secretary Lynneth Demaisip. The following RNET’s was also present: Ms. Nemia Lumaino from DTI XI, Ms. Clemencia Fabia from Dep Ed XI and Sulbanon Quibo from NCMF XI who helped Dr. Ungson during the giving of awards and recognition.

This year’s ROBNS 2016 was awarded to BNS Daisy J. Bollifer, from Baragay Katipunan, Nabunturan, Compostela Valley Province among the 8 contenders within the region. With her during the award was Mr. Roldan Bollifer, her husband and Brgy. Captain Paz Maglangit. BNS Bollifer served her barangay from January 2, 2000 until present. The other BNS contenders were also recognized during the awarding ceremony  and they received cash and certificates. Following the recognition of ROBNS was the recognition of the Green Banner awards of City-level and municipal level. A short AVP presentation was shown to highlight the Nutrition Programs of the two Green Banner Awardees.
