February2023 borbon NIE TrainingBorbon Cebu – The National Nutrition Council Region VII (NNC 7) and the Department of Health Central Visayas – Center for Health Development (DOH CV CHD) trained the members of Borbon Municipal Nutrition Cluster (MNCluster) on nutrition in emergencies. The training was held from 31 January to 3 February 2023 at the DRRM-H OPCEN, rural health office of the municipality upon the request of MNAO Dr. Corazon B. Dotillos who wished to make their MNCluster 100% ready in case of calamities and disasters. 30 participated in the 4-day extensive training.

The MNCluster conducted said capacity development activity to ensure prompt and effective response during disasters and emergencies most especially to the most vulnerable groups including infants, children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, older persons, and people with disabilities. To be successful in the operationalization of the Nutrition Cluster, it also requires the correct and reliable most recent data about areas and the people affected and essential capacities to respond to nutrition emergencies generated through an efficient information management system.

According to the Daily Nutritional Guide Pyramid for Filipino Adults (20-39 years old), the recommended daily intake of sugar is 5-8 teaspoons. Too much sugar is associated with wide health complications such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Fortunately, we have sugar alternatives that help reduce the sugar in the diet. February2023 DMO Meeting FINALCebu City – The National Nutrition Council Region VII headed by the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, Dr. Parolita A. Mission, with ND II Franz Cassandra R. Ontina and ND II Geraldine Mae S. Pausanos updated the DOH Development Management Officers of Cebu on the status of the nutrition program in the province. The session was held on 9 February 2023 at the DOH CV CHD Conference Room. It was attended by 17 DMOs province-wide.

Under the National Health Workforce Support System (NHWSS), the DOH deploys Human Resources for Health in Nutrition through the Nutrition Dietitian Deployment Program. NDDPs are deployed to various priority areas in the province to catalyze and scale up nutrition action at the local government unit level.

February2023 OCD Advocacy VisitLapu-lapu City – The NNC 7 thru RNPC Dr. Parolita A. Mission and DMO II Christine M. Lopez conducted an advocacy visit to the Office of Civil Defense Region VII (OCD 7) Regional Director Segundo S. Bolo and called for support for the formulation and implementation of LGUs’ nutrition in emergencies plans and programs. The visit was held on 7 February 2023. Engr. Ver Neil Balaba, Chief, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Division; Mr. Philip Ponte, Chief, Operations Section; Engr. Rhafael Luche, Operations Staff & Information Officer, and Ms. Jane Abapo the RNC-TWG representative of OCD 7 also joined the meeting.

During the session, RNPC Dr. Mission introduced NNC 7 to OCD 7 and how the latter can contribute to the achievement of the Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition targets especially in protecting the nutritional status of the vulnerable sectors in times of emergencies and disasters. She also discussed the imperative of investing in nutrition and the possible joint projects both agencies can undertake.
