Bohol Province - The First 1000 Days of life starts during the conception of the child in the mother’s womb. The overall well-being of a woman during her pregnancy is vital for the growth of the child in her womb. Maternal undernutrition and overnutrition might lead to increased risk for acute and chronic diseases for both mother and child, poor pregnancy outcomes, or worst, maternal and child morbidity.

But these can be prevented from happening if we follow these recommendations for the right diet during pregnancy:

article on iodine

La Libertad, Negros Oriental -- Iodine is an essential mineral that is naturally present and found in some foods, added to salt that is labeled as “iodized” and is available as a dietary supplement. Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones control the body's metabolism and many other important functions. Getting enough iodine is very important especially for infants and pregnant women for proper bone and brain development of the growing fetus.

Since the body does not produce iodine, it needs to be supplied in the diet. People who don’t get enough iodine cannot make sufficient amounts of thyroid hormone. This can cause many problems. Iodine deficiency especially during pregnancy is considered a public health concern. Severe iodine deficiency can permanently harm the fetus by causing stunted growth, intellectual disability, and delayed sexual development.

Nutrition and human health

Carmen, Cebu – Food is one of the basic needs in our day-to-day living. No single amount of food can provide all the nutrients we need in our bodies. Nutrients are the building blocks of life. Nutrients include proteins, carbs, fat, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water. People are more likely to acquire certain health disorders if their food intake lacks the proper combination of nutrients.

Nutrition also examines how people can use dietary choices to lower their risk of disease, as well as what occurs when a person consumes too much or too little of a nutrient. The importance of good nutrition in our lives cannot be underestimated. It can aid in the prevention of diseases like as obesity, diabetes, and cancer.

PR nao congress

Cebu City – Finally back after last year’s hiatus, the Regional Congress of Nutrition Action Officers is given the green light by the Central Visayas Association of Nutrition Action Officers, (CeVANAO) Inc. Thus aptly, going with the theme: “Nutrition programs, Advancing Onwards in the new normal” or “NAO in the new normal”.

Scheduled on the 10th of September, the congress is jam packed with technical inputs that aim to equip Nutrition Action Officers to manage (from planning, organizing, coordinating, implementation and monitoring and implementation) nutrition programs in the new normal and in light of the financial windfall for the local governments and full devolution transition of basic services and facilities which will be permanently taken out from the NGAs and be fully entrusted to the LGUs.
