There is nowadays an increasing consumption of energy drinks – beverages that can keep us awake and keep us alert and have more concentration to meet the demands of our work. Among children and teenagers energy drink consumption may just be part of a fad.
Energy drinks have additives to increase stamina, alertness, and concentration.
Contents include the following in different amounts: Caffeine from different sources, sugar, stimulants (ginseng, guarana, yerba mate, taurine, L-carnitine, D-glucoronolactone, inositol), certain vitamins and minerals.
Caffeine. High caffeine content causes palpitations (You can feel your heart beating faster and harder), hypertension, nausea (the feeling that you like to vomit), vomiting, and convulsions.
Caffeine content ranges from 47 to 80 grams for every eight ounce to 207 mg. per two ounces drink.
Caffeine intake up to 400 mg. per day is generally considered safe among adults but no intensive studies have been done yet to know if there is any tolerable level of caffeine in children and adolescents.

The Cordillera has some of the indicators of good nutrition based on the latest statistics of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute.
However, the region has to address its high overweight data since it has the highest prevalence of hypertension.
National Nutrition Council Program Coordinator Rita Papey said among the nutrition indicators are the prevalence of underweight, wasting, stunting, and over nutrition.
According to the 2015 FNRI data, 5.8 percent of Cordillerans are underweight, compared to the national level of 10.3 percent.

BONTOC, Mountain Province – The Search for the Healthiest Office in the provincial government is on.
Led by Dr. Penelope Domogo of the Provincial Health Office in partnership with PDOHO Mountain Province and Red Cross Mountain Province Chapter, the inspection team started visiting provincial government offices and national line agencies except the Bontoc General Hospital and district hospital.
The Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC) and Provincial Coalition on Health Lifestyle (PCHL) launched the search to promote a healthy working environment among provincial government employees.
The judges include representatives from the Department of Education, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, PNC and PHO.
This is the first time the provincial government is conducting a Search for the Healthiest Office. Offices of seven personnel or below are under the Small Office category while those with eight or more personnel fall under the Big Office category.
The first criteria set by the PNC and PCHL include no smoking in the office and its premises; no drinking liquor during office hours except during special occasions such as Christmas Party; no chewing of moma in the office; and no burning of waste.

BANGUED, Abra – The Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC)-Cordillera is expanding the implementation of an interactive education tool in nutrition to address malnutrition in four towns of Abra and press on towards health and nutrition development for the whole province.
The Pabasa sa Nutrisyon will be conducted for Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries of the municipalities of Tayum, Lagangilang, San Isidro and La Paz for three months. It shall be undertaken in coordination with the Department of Health, Abra – Provincial Nutrition Committee and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
The project aims that by the December, the 4Ps beneficiaries would understand and give importance to nutrition and promote right nutrition practices that will meet nutrition needs of children in their respective places.
The Pabasa sa Nutrisyon is an educational tool involving modules on nutrition in the family development sessions towards an improved nutritional status of children, and other vulnerable groups like pregnant and lactating mothers.

The Department of Health advised the public to avoid buying vaccines for Japanese encephalitis or any vaccine sold online or from unauthorized distributors or retailers.
DOH Entomologist Ursula Segundo said that the Food and Drug Administration recently issued Advisory 2017-265 warning the public from accessing vaccines online or from non-FDA authorized sellers to be protected from poor quality drugs or counterfeit products.
Under Republic Act 3720, An Act Ensuring the Safety of Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics, as amended by RA 9711, all establishments that sell or offer for sale vaccines and other drug products must first secure a license to operate or an authorization from FDA.
Dr. Maria Socorro Sarfati of the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center also said getting vaccines for Japanese encephalitis or dengue during the peak season when these diseases occur is not advisable as this does not guarantee efficiency. BAGUIO CITY- Cordillera Administrative Region Barangay Nutrition Scholars Federation, Inc., the regional federation of BNSs in the region had their 2nd semetral meeting for 2017 on September 07, 2017 at Hotel Supreme, Baguio City. One main agenda of the meeting is the election of new set of officers for 2017-2019.
From the secret ballot way of election, a new President of the regional federation emerged in the person of Monica Sicat, the BNS of City Camp, Baguio City and the current President of Baguio City BNS Federation. BNS Joan Alvez of Baguio City, the outgoing President was elected as Vice-President, BNS Celia Dulnuan of Asipulo, Ifugao as the Secretary, BNS Love-in Lagat of Aguinaldo, Ifugao as the Assistant Secretary, BNS Thelma Bulosan of Bucay, Abra as Treasurer, BNS Veron Adviento of Lagawe, Ifugao as Auditor, BNSs Geraldine Cayat of Sablan, Benguet and Marilou Lu of Lagangilang, Abra as PROs and BNSs Mila Buya of Kapangan, Benguet and Leonida Uddipa of Luna, Apayao as Business Managers. For the Board Members of each province and city, Dado Ilong for Tabuk City, Helen Castillo for Abra, Evelyn Wacan for Apayao and Remedios Martinez for Baguio City were elected.
