ATOK, Benguet- LGU Atok heightens fight against malnutrition in the municipality through the conduct of a series of planning workshops for its barangays aimed at overcoming malnutrition. It allocated P90,000.00 fund for the 2018 Barangay Nutrition Action Plan (BNAP) formulation workshops that will be conducted from August to October 2017.
Ms. Linda Binay-an, the Municipal Nutrition Action Officer-designate and the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) secretariat facilitated the first workshop last August 29-30 for barangays Cattubo and Paoay at the FITS Center, Paoay, Atok, Benguet. Nutrition Officer II Nancy Paclos of NNC-CAR, Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Amelia Cayap and District Nutrition Program Coordinator Joynalyn Tadifa served as co-facilitators.
The barangays of Naguey, Poblacion and Pasdong are scheduled to have their BNAP formulation workshop on September 27-28, 2017 while the barangays of Abiang, Caliking and Topdac on October 2017. MNAO Binay-an is hoping that with this strategy of the Municipal Nutrition Committee, the municipality can further improve nutritional status of their population especially stunting among 0-59 months aside from improving planning and preparation of accomplishment reports in all barangays.

Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) were hailed for their contribution in improving the nutritional status of the communities.
The BNS are considered the heroes behind the success of the Philippine Plan for Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022 of the Department of Health.
In a recent visit, DOH Asec. For Health and Executive Director of the National Nutrition Council Maria Bernardita Flores acknowledged the important role that BNS are doing for the country.
“Through the help of BNS, nutrition programs and advocacies can reach even those in the geographically isolated and displaced areas, where malnutrition prevalence remains high,” Flores added.

BAUANG, La Union- Key members of the municipal nutrition committees from Bucloc, Lagangilang, Pilar, San Isidro and Sallapadan Abra drafted their local nutrition action plans for 2018 to 2020 in a workshop facilitated by NNC-CAR on August 22-24, 2017 at Marand Resort and Spa, Bauang, La Union. This is the second batch of planning workshop conducted by NNC-CAR as part of the LGU mobilization strategy approved by the Regional Nutrition Committee through Resolution No. 5 s. 2017.
The participating municipalities were selected based on the prevalence of stunting in the 2016 Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus results. Municipal Nutrition Committee members which include MNAO designates, Municipal Health Officers, MLGOOs, MPDC, MSWDO staff, other RHU staff and two Barangay Nutrition Scholars from Sablan, Benguet were the participants.
In 2016, the first batch of local nutrition planning workshop was conducted for seven municipalities of Abra namely: Bangued, Danglas, Lagayan, Licuan-Baay, Malibcong, Tineg and Villaviciosa Copies of the municipal nutrition action plans of these municipalities were forwarded to NNC-CAR office.

Barangay nutrition scholars (BNSs), while being community-based volunteers, are assured of their tenure and should not be replaced every time there is an election of new local government officials.
Assistant Secretary of Health Maria-Bernardita Flores, also the National Nutrition Council executive director, said Wednesday they have worked with the Department of the Interior and Local Government, which came up with a circular that provides that BNSs shall retain their status despite the conduct of elections and even when new local officials assumed their elective posts.
“NNC and the BNSs have invested a lot on their capacity building, training, and their connection with communities they serve. It assures the continuity of the provision of health services,” Flores said in a press briefing held as part of the 4th National Conference of BNSs National Capital Region and South Luzon Cluster in Baguio City on Aug. 30 and 31. The BNSs are members of the LuzViMin BNS Federation Inc. composed of more than 44,000 BNSs nationwide.
“BNSs are trained, already known to the families in respective communities, and are those who are able to convince them to practice that would improve and maintain their health,” Flores added.

BAGUIO CITY- Members of the Provincial Nutrition Cluster of Kalinga, members of the local nutrition committee with the Municipal Nutrition Action Officers and Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officers (LDRRMOs) of the seven municipalities of Kalinga namely Balbalan, Lubuagan, Pasil, Pinukpuk, Rizal, Tanudan and Tinglayan including the CRRRMO of Tabuk City were trained on nutrition in emergencies on August 15-17, 2017 at Jotay Resort, Santa Ana, Cagayan.
The training was attended by 25 participants including nutrition cluster members of Baguio City, Tinoc, Ifugao and Benguet province. It was facilitated by Nutrition Officer (NO) III Bella Basalong and NO II Nancy Paclos of NNC-CAR together with the District Nutrition Program Coordinator Ms. Frances Sebastian of Kalinga, Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) Merilyn Bangaan of Rizal, Kalinga and MNAO Jimely Quinones of Santa Ana, Cagayan.
The training completed the three batches of trainings on nutrition in emergencies for the local government units conducted by NNC-CAR for 2017. Among the six provinces of Cordillera, the province of Apayao was already trained in 2016. The provinces of Abra and Benguet and the city of Baguio are expected to be trained in the succeeding years to ensure that malnutrition among the vulnerable groups will not worsen during the emergencies and disasters experienced in the region.

Around 900 barangay nutrition scholars (BNSs) from the National Capital Region and South Luzon cluster met on Aug. 30 and 31 in Baguio for their biennial national conference to renew their commitment to end malnutrition in their respective barangays.
As community-based volunteers, BNSs bridge the gap between families and service providers to deliver nutrition and related services. The BNSs are members of the LuzViMin BNS Federation composed of more than 44,000 BNSs nationwide.
With the theme, “PPAN para sa bayan, nutrisyon at serbisyo,” the conference underscores the significant role of the BNSs in the implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2017-2022 as the country’s framework of action for nutrition improvement. The PPAN was launched in Iloilo City last May.
