Baguio City. The celebration of this year’s Nutrition Month with a theme “Timbang iwasto sa tamang nutrisyon at ehersisyo” is timely to intensify consciousness of the Cordillerans to be healthy by achieving desirable body weight according to the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator (RNPC) of National Nutrition Council-CAR during the Regional Nutrition Committee during the 2nd Quarter Meeting held on June 16, 2015 in Baguio City. She said that the Cordillera is among the top five regions in the Philippines with the highest prevalence of overweight and obesity based on the 8th National Nutrition Survey conducted by DOST-FNRI. She said that obesity poses health risk to individuals and puts financial burden to the government in managing the non-communicable diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer brought about by being overweight and obese, hence there is a need to address the problem on overnutrition.
In commemoration of the Nutrition Month, the members of the Regional Nutrition Committee decided to conduct Kapihan with cooking demo and creative gardening demo on July 2, 2015 and Walk for Nutrition on July 24, 2015 to intensify advocacy on the nutrition month theme.

The Cordillera’s nutritional status is better compared with other regions in the country.
In the recent 5th nutrition summit which was attended by health advocates, nutrition workers and barangay officials, National Nutrition Council Regional Director Rita Papey said the nutrition status of children within 60 months are better compared with other regions.
Older children however have a tendency towards under nutrition and obesity; within an “obesogenic” environment. Accordingly, these are caused by less outdoor activities, eating more processed foods, and more sugar based food and juices.
