LAGAWE, Ifugao – Stakeholders of the Nutriskwela Community Radio Stations (NCRS) Network Program nationwide have renewed their commitment that would propel excellent delivery of services to the people and the community as a whole during a national conference in Manila on January 6 and 7.

Assistant Health Secretary and National Nutrition Council Executive Director Maria-Bernardita T. Flores led the renewal of pledge of commitment of about 100 participants from 25 National Capital Region stations nationwide and NNC central and regional offices.

In the Cordillera, the Radyo Kiphodan, DZNC-FM 99.1 in Lagawe, Ifugao and Radyo Kabinnulig, DZNA-FM 99.7 in Lagangilang, Abra joined in the renewal of commitment.

Flores reminded NCRS is not just a music station. It also focuses on broadcasting nutrition-related information, wherein 60 percent of the broadcast is devoted to health and nutrition and 40 percent for music, fun and other related activities.

She said only timely and correct information should be broadcast in nutriskwela community radion stations, which should be used extensively during calamities and other kinds of disasters.

NCRS was established by the NNC in partnership with a local government unit or state university or college in 2008 with the goal of empowering the community through radio to disseminate correct, current, relevant nutrition and health information, and education and developmental information from all concerned sectors of the community. – Marcelo B. Lagawe, Ifugao – More Nutriskwela Community Radio Stations (NCRS) will be established and upgraded in the country radio to disseminate correct, current, and relevant nutrition and health information, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) reported during the fifth conference of the NCR network program in Manila, recently.

The NNC announced ten more NCRSs will be established in seven regions in the country under its Nutriskwela phase 4 expansion program. These regions include the Cordillera, regions 1, 4B, 5, 8, 9, and 12.

In Cordillera, the station is eyed to be set u in Pasil, Kalinga. NCRS are already established in this town and in Lagangilang, Abra.

There are currently 25 NCRSs in 15 regions nationwide established by the NNC in partnership with local government units or state universities and colleges with the goal of empowering the community through radio to disseminate correct, current and relevant nutrition and health information.

NCRS is a non-profit and non-partisan that disseminate educational and developmental information from all concerned sectors of the community, government and non government agencies.

The criteria to establish the radio station are high prevalence of underweight children, absence or limited access to commercial radio broadcasts, willingness of partner local government units to provide counterpart personnel, space and funds for the operations, pass the technical evaluation of NNC, and feasibility of sustaining the operations of the broadcast facility. – Marcelo B. The Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) and the National Nutrition Council (NNC) recently came up with guidelines on good practices on nutrition award that recognizes the outstanding achievements and contributions of various stakeholders in addressing malnutrition problems and promoting good nutrition among their respective targets clientele.

Regional nutrition program Coordinator Rita D. Papey said tough the Best practice on Nutrition Award is essentially accorded to local government units. The guidelines include programs or activities of non-government organizations, national government agencies, and other private institutions with significant contributions in nutrition improvement.

Criteria for identifying best practices are uniqueness/originality/innovative in nature, relevance, effectiveness, completeness of supporting documents, efficiency, sustainability, and client or community involvement.

Entries for the search can be through self-nomination or nomination by other parties. After validation, the result will be presented to the RNC for approval.

There is no limit, to the number of winners as long as the entry meets the required score of 88 points.

Papey said malnutrition in the region remains a concern with the substantial number of undernourished preschool children in some areas and other vulnerable groups suffering from undernutrition.

She added undernutrition is aggravated by the increasing number of overweight and obese individuals across all age groups. Acknowledging the effect of malnutrition to the affected individuals and to the economy in a broader sense, some local government units and civil society groups favor programs to address malnutrition. – PIA-CAR Maria Aprila W. ALFONSOLISTA, Ifugao – Mayor Glenn Prudenciano approved an ordinance granting incentives to retiring barangay nutrition scholars upon reaching the optimal or mandatory age of retirement.

The ordinance states nutrition scholars, at the age of 60 to 65, could apply early retirement with an incentive of P20, 000. Those who reach the compulsory retirement age of 65 will receive P25, 000.

The giving of incentives is in recognition of the untiring services of barangay nutrition scholars who help in the reduction of malnutrition cases in the municipality and gaining the Green Banner Award on nutrition in the region.

Barangay nutrition scholars are trained community workers whose basic tasks include caring for the malnourished, mobilizing the community for the improvement of their nutrition situation, linking the community with service providers, and assisting in the delivery of nutrition services.

To qualify as a barangay nutrition scholar, one must be bonafide resident of the barangay for at least four years and can speak the local language well. They must possess leadership potentials as evidence d by membership and leadership in community organizations and willing to serve the barangay, part-time or full-time for at least one year.

they must at least elementary graduate but preferably reached high school level, physically and mentally fit, more than 18 years old, but younger than 60 years old. Presidential Decree 1569 mandated the development of one BNS in every barangay in the country. ASIPULO, Ifugao – Twelve Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) in the province were among those honored by the National Nutrition Council for their long years of service during the 3rd National Conference for BNS Northern Luzon Cluster in Vigan, Ilocos Sur recently.

Provincial Nutrition Program Coordinator Corazon Dawong said the awardees spent 30 to 36 years in the service delivering nutrition services and other related activities in the barangays.

Among the provinces in the Cordillera, Ifugao has the highest BNS Awardees. “Every year, the province is producing outstanding BNS”, Dawong said.

Aside from a plaque, awardees received a cash incentive of 12,000 for 30 years in service and P400 for every additional year of service. Ifugao has registered a total of 191 BNS province-wide.

The giving of long-service award is in recognition of the invaluable contribution of BNS in implementing the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition. It also aims to encourage continuous and dedicated service among BNS.

The Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition is the country’s response to malnutrition. As a component of the 2011 – 2016 Philippine Development Plan, the Action plan provides the frame work for improving the nutritional status of Filipinos.

The action plan is anchored on the Millennium Development Goals, particularly those related to nutrition nutrition that targets halving the 1990 levels of underweight among under-fives and households with inadequate energy intake.

The Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition takes off from the nutrition situation as determined by the 2008 national nutrition survey. Challenges that should be addressed are hunger, child undernutrition, deficiencies in iron, iodine and vitamin A, obesity, and overweight. – Marcelo B. Lihgawon

LAMUT, Ifugao-Twenty-Four community mobilizers and peer counselors here recently trained on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Program of the Government.

The four day training was conducted to community mobilizers and peer counselors consisting of barangay officials and health workers and volunteer mothers by staff members by the officials of the provincial and municipal government through the nutrition and health offices.

The lecturers gave an overview on the Philippine IYCF strategic plan; community support; and proper position of breastfeeding and mapping or identification of partners; conducting assembly; practices in the community orientation of peer counselors, action planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and documentation; and overview of IYCF counseling and use of counseling cards.

“As trained community mobilizers, you should continue to educate mothers about breastfeeding and share the learning gained to your clients and family Z,” said National Nutrition Council-CAR Director Rita D. Papey.

The participants are expected to recruit more volunteers to join community mobilizers and peer counselors.
According to the Department of Health website, a global strategy for IYCF was issued jointly by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund in 2002 to reverse the disturbing trends in infant and young child feeding practices.

This global strategy was endorsed by the 55th World Health Assembly in May 2002 and by the UNICEF Executive Board in September 2002, respectively. Marcelo B. Lihgawon
