July 02, 2014 – The Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) kicked off nutrition month celebration through a forum held at Kabugao, Apayao in partnership with the Municipal Government and the Provincial Government of Apayao.
RNC representative from the DOH, DILG, POPCOM, Dep-Ed and NNC took 14 hours of travel(one way) for this activity attended by around 100 nutrition stakeholders from the Provincial Nutrition Committee members of Apayao , Municpal Nutrition Committee memebers of Kabugao and Members of the Barangay Nutrition Committees. The RNC also invited LGU partners from Baguio City, Ifugao and Benguet particulary Kapangan.
This kick off activity in Kabugao, one of the municipalities in the region with high in malnutrition prevalence and among the farthest municipalities from the regional center demonstrates the RNC’s commitment to its mission to converge efforts, programs and projects on nutrition prioritizing the nutritionally at risk areas in collaboration with local government units.
NPC Papey, Municipal Nutrition Coordinator Dr PJ Ukkong and Apayao DNPC Henschel discussed the local nutrition situation. Dr Mary Jo Dulawan, Provincial Health Office and Provincial Nutrition Action Plan of Ifugao, Barangay Captain Hon Richard Baguilat of Tuplac Kiangan, and Magdalena Sacpa, 2013 Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar all from LGUs awarded for oustanding performance in nutrition shared their experiences in managing local nutrition programs. DILG representative Jocelyn Rojo presented the Legal mandates on Nutrition while ms Angelita Sabado, City Nutrition Program Coordinator presented the Nutrition talking points.
All speakers stressed the need to improve the nutrition situation underscoring the role of provincial, municipal and barangay nutrition committees and the need for collabaoration among members of the local committees.
“High Malnutrition is considered as a silent emergency that makes the population doubly vulnerable in times of emergencies and ensuring that local nutrition committees get organized to act on the situation is a key step to preparedness for addressing nutrition emergencies” was the summary statement made by NPC Papey in her closing remarks.
Representatives from the PNC, MNC and BNCs expressed their commitment to push further the implementation of intervetnions to improve nutrition status in Kabugao.

7-9 July 2014—The National Nutrition Council-CAR (NNC-CAR) invited the two newly hired support staff of the Provincial Nutrition Committee of Abra for a nutrition program orientation held at the NNC-CAR Regional Office as one strategy of the Regional Nutrition Committee to focus technical assistance on areas in the region with high malnutrition rate and with not fully functional local nutrition committees.
The Provincial Nutrition Committee- Abra established its Provincial Nutrition Office last February 2014 managed by Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (PNAO) Dr. Leona Beroña and District Nutrition Program Coordinator Glenda Benedito. In support with the PNAO who is at the same time the Provincial Health Officer and DNPC Benedito who is assigned as dietitian at Lapaz District Hospital, Gov. Bersamin hired two staff, Ms. Lhea Grei Benedito and Ms. Krizmae Roanne VIllaruz to assist in managing the said office. Hence, the orientation focused on the management of the provincial nutrition office in which part of the orientation is the presentation of the following: NNC organizational structure, Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, Operation Timbang Plus and the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation. Checklist of reports to be maintained in the office was also shared.
To complete the orientation, the group which was spearheaded by the NNC staff visited Kapangan, Benguet, Nutrition Honor Awardee and Barangay City Camp Proper, Baguio City. The visitation aimed purposely to show how a nutrition office is being managed and maintained and what documents and reports should be available. It was also an opportunity for them to get insights on the local nutrition programs as well as the effective strategies of the both areas.
The two staff committed to apply whatever strategies and learning they had absorbed in the two-day orientation.

BAGUIO CITY, June 13(PIA) - - Members of the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) convened recently to deliberate the result of evaluation of the annual Search for Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar in the Cordillera Administrative Region.
There are six contenders for the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (ROBNS) title namely Easel D. Ledesma of Penarrubia, Abra; Magdalena Sacpa of Kapangan, Benguet; Love-In Lagat of Aguinaldo, Ifugao; Ellen Lingayo of Pasil, Kalinga; Purita Perez of Queen of Peace, Baguio City, and Milagros Cabe of Tabuk City.
Each of the contenders was evaluated and rated based on the comparison of their annual accomplishments and the targets set in her BNS action plan following the basic tasks of identifying and locating target beneficiaries, delivering services, surveillance of identified and interventions done to identified malnourished children and credit will be given to performance of additional activities such as more frequent weighing of all pre-school children and assistance in other barangay nutrition activities.
The first ranking BNS with a final rating of 90% and higher shall be declared ROBNS and shall be given a trophy and cash award during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony which will be announced soon.

BAGUIO CITY, May 13 (PIA) - - The search is on for the Search for the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) and the best nutrition program implementers in the Cordillera.
The Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) composed of representatives from national government agencies, non-government organizations and the academe, is now going around the provinces for the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) on Nutrition Programs.
The MELLPI which aims to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of local governments in planning and implementing local nutrition programs is an annual activity of the National Nutrition Council in partnership with the RNET.
Both the MELLPI and BNS evaluation are institutionalized activities since 1979 of the national and local nutrition committees.
The evaluation of MELLPI and the BNS has started in the City of Baguio last April 28, 2014 to May 2 followed by to Kalinga and Tabuk City on May 5-9; Abra on May 12-16, Mt. Province on May 19-23, Apayao on May 26-30, Benguet on June 9-13 and Ifugao on June 16-18. (JDP/MAWC – PIA CAR)

BAGUIO CITY, June 25 (PIA) - -The Regional Technical Assistants on Nutrition (RTAN) members have come up with proposed activities in line with the Nutrition Month celebration this July with the theme "Kalamidad paghandaan: Gutom at malnutrisyon agapan!".
Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Rita Papey informed that the 40th Nutrition Month campaign focus on nutrition in emergencies aims to provide the venue for the general public to realize the importance of preparedness during emergencies, how to respond and what recovery measures can be taken to prevent death and worsening of malnutrition of affected population groups.
It also aims to promote interventions to address nutritional needs in emergencies and disasters including preparedness, response and recovery; mobilize responders particularly the local nutrition clusters and stakeholders to address gaps in nutrition in emergencies response from national to barangay levels; and increase awareness among families and individuals on coping and resiliency strategies to prevent malnutrition and worsening of nutritional status in times of emergencies and disasters.
