Barangay Nutrition Scholars in the region continue delivering their duties and responsibilities amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the nature of their work, they are at risk of contacting COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. The MA being provided to them, alongside the other assistances, is beneficial for continuous delivery of health and nutrition services. (Photos were taken pre-pandemic).

Cordillera Administrative Region – Number of Barangay Nutrition Scholars given medical and survivorship assistance increased up to 2.56% from CY 2020 to 2021.

In 2020, 14 BNSs availed medical assistance (MA) and four BNSs beneficiaries were given survivorship assistance (SA), whereas in 2021, 38 BNSs availed MA and eight BNS beneficiaries were provided with SA.

Ms. Magdalena Sacpa of Central, Kapangan, Benguet was awarded as 1st Runner-Up Outstanding BNS during the virtual 2021 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on October 21, 2021.

Being a Barangay Nutrition Scholar for thirteen years is a rewarding learning experience for Ms. Magdalena Sacpa. She can still remember when she started to be a volunteer BNS on October 7, 2007, when she needed to undergo trainings and continuous education in order to deliver nutrition programs in the community. Some tasks were also gradually introduced to her, such as conducting Operation Timbang Plus, lectures on nutrition, orientation and IECs to constituents, home visits, monitoring and evaluation of vulnerable and primary clients, giving technical assistance to co-workers, and doing innovative programs. In implementing these works, she has to adjust her time and even sacrifice it to do work at night. She has to deal with people having different attitudes and values and even hike mountains to visit clients in far flung sitios.

“Leadership is service, not position.” –Tim Fargo

Being a leader is about giving service to others instead of being served by others. This is held true for the former District Nutrition Program Coordinator of Ifugao, Ms. Corazon Dawong. For forty-one years, she had worked and served at the provincial nutrition office. She is a leader but she didn’t look at it as a position but as a way to be of service to the people. Her hard works and effort had led the province to achieve the highest award given for nutrition.

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” –Steve Jobs

Noemi Garcia is described as a cheerful Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) by her colleagues in Baguio City. A high school graduate and was encouraged by her aunt to become a BNS, Noemi has been serving the barangay for 13 years now. Noemi first served as a BNS at Barangay Teodora Alonzo, Baguio City for five years, and was designated as a BNS in January 2016 at Barangay Alfonso Tabora and at the same time appointed as the Barangay Nutrition Action Officer (BNAO).  BNS Noemi dedicated herself on the implementation of health and nutrition programs and activities to their constituents.

Dr. Marcela M. Tinoyan of Tublay, Benguet was awarded as 2019 LNAO of the Year-CAR during the virtual 2021 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on October 21, 2021.

“I did all things through Christ who strengthens me”.  - Philippians 4:13

Challenging and fulfilling. These two words are how Doc. Marcela Tinoyan recounts her experience as the former Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) of Tublay, Benguet. It was challenging in a sense that she had to surmount herculean tasks along the way, but it was also equally fulfilling as she witnessed the empowerment of community people and stakeholders towards better nutrition outcomes. The added icing to the aforementioned “savory cake” are the recognition and accolades bestowed upon the municipality and barangays as best nutrition program implementers in the past years, and hopefully in the future.
