It is hard to find time to volunteer in this world full of hustles, but its benefits can be even greater for one as a volunteer.
Ms. Ayleen T. Luis’ journey as a Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) of Daclan for almost four years taught her a lot and it helped her in many ways. During her first time as a BNS, she struggled to interact with the people in the community and work as a volunteer. But as time went by, it made her realize that volunteering does not only help others or the community. It also helps oneself. Being a BNS honed her physically and mentally. She learned how to interact and communicate with different people with different personalities; became more self-confident; gained more knowledge and skills especially about nutrition through activities, seminars, and pieces of training; and developed her skills in documentation and record keeping. Most of all, it makes her happy because she has an opportunity to serve and is able to share God’s Word with her community.

Overweight and obesity exacerbate the burden of malnutrition in the country, together with the problems of undernutrition which include stunting and wasting. With this, national and global government agencies are calling for synergism among the public, civil society organizations, academe, and the public sector in acting upon the prevention and management of overweight and obesity, especially among children.
A healthy diet is very important, especially for children. According to Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov, UNICEF Representative in the Philippines, children who do not observe healthy diets and practice little exercise are increasingly prone to depression, underperforming at school and learning, and are more susceptible of having debilitating diseases like diabetes when they grow older. Also, we can fight obesity with public health tools to promote healthy diet and physical activity, financial and regulatory tools to make healthy diets more accessible and affordable, and clinical tools to provide quality care for children and adults who live with obesity as stated by Dr. Rajenda Prasad Yadav, acting WHO Representative in the Philippines.

Kalinga is a landlocked province in the northernmost section of the Cordillera Region, composed of seven municipalities and one component city. Worldwide, the province is known for the ancient method of “batok” or hand-tapped tattoos. The passion and love that the Kalinga people put into their work are seen in their rich cultural traditions and expressions of music and dance.
This same passion and love are what Ms. Kristal Dacio is demonstrating as the District Nutrition Program Coordinator of the province of Kalinga. She is a Nutritionist-Dietitian by profession and had been a public health servant for the YKalingas for almost eight years now. She is also the coordinator of other health programs such as the Adolescent Health and Development Program, Newborn Screening, and Geographical Isolated and Disadvantaged Area (GIDA). In addition, she serves as the alternate focal person of Provincial Council for the Protection of Children (PCPC) and the Gender and Development program. Despite the voluminous task of a DNPC, she always ensures her active involvement in other health-related programs and activities of the province.

The Philippine Action for Nutrition (PPAN) is a framework that guides stakeholders on how to continuously contribute to the nutrition development of the country and how to continuously address the problems on nutrition. Multi-sectoral interventions are needed to address the multidimensional problem of malnutrition. Thus, it entails the government and private agencies, stakeholders, nutrition workers, and the community to enjoin in battling malnutrition.
Inter-agency Local Nutrition Committees (LNCs) translate the PPAN thru their local nutrition action plans conducted in their respective Local Government Units (LGUs).
Representatives from different local departments such as health, agriculture, social welfare and development, development planning and budget as well as national government agencies such as DepEd and non-government organizations operating in the area compose the local nutrition committee. The overall management and implementation of the local nutrition program are coordinated by the Nutrition Action Officer (NAO).
