We make change work for women, Juana Laban sa Pandemya: Kaya! This year’s national women’s month celebration may have come to an end but the call for concrete, sustainable, and inclusive actions towards gender equality continues. The month-long celebration with the theme, “Juana Laban sa Pandemya: Kaya!”, highlighted the resiliency of Juanas and their ability to thrive in these challenging times brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In these difficult times, we need empowered Juanas who have the ability to determine their own choices and exercise their right to influence social change for themselves and others. As the nation focused on the importance of gender-equality emphasizing women empowerment this March, we are reminded that women or the Juanas play significant roles not only in the battle against COVID-19 but in building a better society through good nutrition. Women empowerment is a pathway to improving child nutrition.

Medical Assistance for Barangay Nutrition Scholars from National Nutrition CouncilDespite the threat of COVID-19 infection, frontline health and nutrition workers including Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) continue in their selfless tasks of providing nutrition and other services in the communities. Many of the BNSs are also deployed in quarantine facilities and are involved in COVID-19 responses such as being members of the Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams (BHERT). In doing so, they put their health at risk.

Notwithstanding the risks that they face daily in the performance of their duties in the communities, the BNSs remain true to their commitment in helping families particularly those with pregnant mothers, infants and young children with their nutritional needs and linking them with nutrition, health, and other programs and services. They help prevent the worsening of the nutritional status of these vulnerable groups especially during this pandemic.

2021 Nutrition Month Theme: "Malnutrisyon patuloy na labanan, First 1000 Days Tutukan!"This year’s celebration of Nutrition Month in July will carry the theme, “Malnutrisyon patuloy na labanan, First 1000 days tutukan!”.  It accentuates the importance of good nutrition during the first 1000 days of the child’s life in preventing stunting and obesity.

Nutrition Month is celebrated every year to create greater awareness on the importance of nutrition among Filipinos.  It is observed every July pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 491 signed on June 25, 1974 by then President Ferdinand Marcos. The National Nutrition Council was given the mandate to coordinate and lead this annual nationwide campaign.

Cabinet Secretary Carlo Nograles leading the distribution of the nutribun to selected Tutok Kainan Program pregnant beneficiaries in Pateros together with (from L-R) RNPC Mila Federizo, NNC ED Dr. Apet Dayanghirang, Pateros Mayor Ike Ponce, and MNAO Jenine Ponce. The Municipality of Pateros kicked off their implementation of the National Nutrition Council’s Tutok Kainan Supplementation Program for pregnant women on March 08, 2021.  The kick-off event coincided with the NNC’s celebration of the International and National Women’s Day.

The Tutok Kainan is part of the National Dietary Supplementation Program of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2017-2022 which aims to prevent stunting by giving nutritious food commodities to nutritionally at-risk pregnant women and children 6-23 months old. The NNC leads the implementation of the program in collaboration with the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Zero Hunger chaired by Cabinet Secretary Karlo B. Nograles.

Distribution of enhanced nutribun and monitoring and reporting of actual feeding of pregnant mothers of Tutok Kainan in Caloocan and Pateros. The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the country’s situation on hunger and malnutrition. Many families go hungry and are not able to eat healthy foods due to limited capacity to buy food. Because of this, many do not get the nutrients that they need to be well-nourished and healthy, and become resilient against COVID-19.

To address the growing problem of hunger and malnutrition, the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) approved a resolution on October 2, 2020 providing a dietary supplementation program (DSP) for children 6-23 months and nutritionally-at-risk pregnant women as a strategy to prevent stunting in children during the first 1000 days of life.

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) is the lead agency for the implementation of the national DSP also known as Tutok Kainan. The program is done in collaboration with the IATF on Zero Hunger chaired by Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei B. Nograles.
