TUGUEGARAO CITY, CAGAYAN- The National Nutrition Council Region 02 (NNC R-02) in line with the celebration of World Population Day led by the Commission on Population (PopCom) delivered Nutrition Services to its clientele last July 11 in Tuguegarao City.
As part of this year’s theme, “Investing in Teenage Girls”, the National Nutrition Council Region 02 (NNC R-02) conducted nutrition counselling by Ms. Ma. Gisela Lonzaga, Nutrition Officer III. This service directly help teenage moms, pregnant and lactating mothers who were present in the said affair.
In addition, other clients also seek for proper nutrition advice in order to monitor their Nutritional Status to avoid lifestyle related diseases. Moreover, the agency distributed IEC materials such as Pinggang Pinoy, Breastfeeding Fact sheet and other related materials.

CITY OF ILAGAN- The National Nutrition Council Region 02 (NNC R-02) in partnership with the City Nutrition Committee of City of Ilagan (CNC-Ilagan) welcomed first 1000 days in a Joint Regional Nutrition Committee and City Nutrition Committee of the City of Ilagan Launching of the 42nd Nutrition Month Celebration last July 1 at Ilagan City Community Center.
This year’s theme, “First 1000 days ni baby pahalagahan para sa malusog na kinabukasan,” focuses in proper nutrition intervention from the day of the conception until the second birthday of a child. Moreover, a total of 300 participants attended the celebration mostly pregnant and lactating, hence NNC R-02 and the CNC Ilagan prepared activities beneficial to them. Also, Director Milagros Morales, Chair, Regional Nutrition Committee, PNAO’s and CNAO’s of different provinces and cities, City of Ilagan Department Heads, BNS Federation Officers, students and Non-Government Organizations (NGO) were present in the affair.
The celebration kicked off with a presentation and orientation of the theme by Ms. Ma. Gisela M. Lonzaga, Nutrition Officer III-NNC R-02, she explained the concept of First 1000 days. Further she emphasized that the first 1000 days is the period of rapid growth where nutrient deficiencies can have long-term consequences. “Good nutrition during this period can help maximize the child’s ability to grow, learn and develop. It is globally recognized as the “golden window of opportunity” for nutrition and related interventions to have a positive impact on the child’s physical and mental development,” she added.
Then, Ms. Benjielyne E. Pagulayan, Nurse and Educator, shared her breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices that inspired the audience to follow her path towards their first 1000 days challenge. She got emotional as she reminisce the hardships that she encountered in her journey to assure that Riley (her daughter) should be exclusively breastfed. She also expressed her gratitude to the people who supported her, especially her husband, in this endeavor.
In addition, as one of the highlights of the program the NNC R-02 together with the various NGOs launched its Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement in the region. Ms. Rhodora G. Maestre, Nutrition Program Coordinator-NNC R-02, oriented the participants about the SUN and how important it is in order to eliminate all forms of malnutrition. “By working together as a movement, we can achieve much more that our own,” she stressed.

The Barangay Nutrition Scholars and Barangay Health Workers are the government’s arms in the efficient implementation of its programs on Health and Nutrition, hand in hand with other health professionals gainfully employed in the government service.
It is a fact well known to everyone that the BHWs and BNSs do not get much compensation from the government. In fact, most receive a minimal honorarium for their services in their barangays. Yet, their roles in the barangays are indispensable. They are the front liners in every barangay’s Health and Nutrition Programs.
Seeing the need to encourage their most effective performance, Board Member Maria Olivia B. Pascual authored the ordinance entitled, “An Ordinance Requiring All Barangay Government Units in the Province of Cagayan to Appropriate Employer Counterpart for the Pag-Ibig Fund Contributions of Barangay Officials as per Section 3C, Rule VII of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act No. 9679.” The ordinance has been unanimously approved by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Cagayan in September 23, 2015.

The ANAK program or the Assist in Nourishing A Kid program of the City Government of Ilagan has benefitted 1,262 day-care children thru its Supplemental Feeding Program for the year 2015 in 91 barangays of this City.
Since the implementation of the Assist in Nourishing A Kid (ANAK) program, specifically the Supplemental Feeding Program (SFP), in 2010, the program greatly reduced the number of malnourished and undernourished children in the City of Ilagan.
Data from the City Health Office revealed that based on their Operation Timbang , the number of underweight children have been reduced to 1.30% in 2013, to .61% in 2014 and . 47% in 2015. For the underweight children, we have a notable decrease from 4.41% in 2013, down to 3.08% in 2014, and continually decreased to 2.23% in 2015.
Insofar as normal children are concerned, it increased from 93.20% in 2013, to 95.08% in 2014, to a high of 96.62% in 2015.
Under the ANAK program, the main benefactor in this program is the Bethesda Ministries International, based in Baguio City, Benguet, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Region 2. Bethesda continuously supplies the vitamin-rich Vitameal Food Supplement which costs Php 2,000.00/bag and Dried Vegetable Soup Mix.
For SY 2015, we were given 200 boxes of Vitameal, costing Php 2.4 million. The DSWD R2 likewise, gave financial assistance in all 128 day-care centers of the City of Ilagan. On the other hand, the City Government of Ilagan supplied the rice subsidy and other assistance for viand.
The Supplemental Feeding Program under the ANAK is an integrated Health and Nutrition program which “feeds the body and nourishing the soul” not only to the day care children but their parents as well. Monthly values education are conducted to parents of these children and also other topics like food and nutrition, responsible parenthood, family planning and the like.

The National Nutrition Council Region 02 successfully held the 3rd Batang Radyo Congress with the theme: “First 1000 Days ni Baby pahalagahan para sa malusog na kinabukasan” at Baguio City last May 17-18, 2016, participated by the members of Batang Radyo sa Nutrisyon from Cauayan, Santiago and Tuguegarao City, Quirino and Lallo, Cagayan.
The said activity aims to inform the public about the importance of First 1000 days in a child’s life. It also presented the vital role breastfeeding starting from conception and before the second birthday of the child and to create awareness on the importance of proper infant and young child feeding practices.
Rhodora G. Maestre, Nutrition Program Coordinator, in her welcome remarks stated that the members of BRSN will be the role models to propagate the mass information for good nutrition by way of using the skills of elementary and high school students in Radio Broadcasting. She also noted that as a young media practitioners their role in massive information campaign is very important.
Mr. Ferdinand Narciso, Head Public Affairs Unit Department of Education Region 02, gave inspiration message to the participants. He emphasized that BRSN plays vital role in ensuring the equilibrium of nutrition status in the region. He applauded the effort of NNC in coming up with this young broadcasters.
NPC Maestre lectured about, “First 1000 days of in a child’s life,” that gave the BRSN members and coaches idea about the said concept. Further she explained to the audience that mothers/parents should prioritize the onset of first 1000 days because it is considered to be a golden window of opportunity.
Dr. Rogelio G. Matalang, President of Federation of Rural Broadcasters (PFRB) discussed the topic about “Tips on How to be an Effective Radio Broadcasting Communicator.” Also, Director and Actor Carlo Maceda of OnCam Productions Inc. shared about the importance of animation in industry.

National Nutrition Council, Region II Batang Radyo sa Nutrisyon recently expressed their support to the promotion of good nutrition in the first 1,000 days in a child’s life in the Cagayan Valley Region.
During the third Batang Radyo sa Nutrisyon Congress held in Baguio City on May 17-18, 2016, one hundred seven promising Batang Radyo sa Nutrisyon members passed a resolution supporting the Regional Nutrition Committee in intensifying its campaign and promotion of programs and interventions towards the first 1,000 days of a child’s life.
Before the signing of the resolution, the young broadcasters were oriented on the developmental milestones and delivery of services through the range of care in the first 1,000 days in a child’s life. These young broadcaster were impressed on how their roles as radio journalists effectively contribute to the wider appreciation of the community for this particular concern.
