Malnutrition remains a global threat, particularly in a child’s life. In the Philippines, the government formulated the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022 to address the pressing problem of malnutrition. It consists of various programs which aim to address the immediate, underlying, and basic causes of malnutrition.
One of the PPAN nutrition-specific programs is the Infant and Youth Child Feeding (IYCF). IYCF program is considered a key area in improving nutrition status and promoting healthy growth and development of children. Its sole goal is to reduce child mortality and morbidity through optimal feeding of infants and young children. Ideal feeding of children, particularly in the first 2 years of life, is critical for optimal nutrition.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that each year, 45% of all child deaths globally were associated with undernutrition, and many of these deaths are related with inappropriate feeding practices during the first year of life.
To improve a child’s survival, WHO and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) issued a global strategy for IYCF. For optimal feeding, the WHO and UNICEF recommended the (1) early breastfeeding initiation or breastfeeding within the first hour of birth; (2) exclusive breastfeeding for the 0-6 months old children; and (3) timely and appropriate complementary feeding at 6 months old up to 2 years old and beyond with continued breastfeeding.

Summer or dry season here, Ka-Nutrisyon! Many look forward to summer to do exciting activities, including basking in the sun, swimming at the beach, and, of course, the feast of delicious thirst-quenching desserts. Summer in the Philippines is truly enjoyable!
Although, technically, the Philippines only has two seasons, rainy and dry, Filipinos usually refer the hot dry season as “summer.” The Amihan season refers to the country’s cool dry season, usually from December up to February, while the Summer or hot dry season is typically starts from March to May.
Parents are preparing for beach getaways as the classes also halt temporarily for a short break. Outdoor activities including flying of Sarangola, bicycle games, scavenger hunt, water balloon fight and many more is indeed the most awaited time of the kids.
Samalamig which means “Coolers” are typically prepared beverages sold on the roadside as refreshments. They can come in various flavors. Starting from Pinoys’ all-time favorite Halo-halo, no one can deny the soothing feeling when the coldness of ice, sugar and varied ingredients travels your throat. Sorbetes or ice cream, Mais con yelo, ice scramble, Sago’t Gulaman, and Buko Pandan are few of the favorite Samalamig everyone can enjoy under the rays of the sun.

The Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022, the country’s masterplan in nutrition improvement, is now on its last leg of implementation and will be followed by a successor plan for 2023-2028. The National Nutrition Council (NNC) takes the lead in the formulation of the PPAN.
PPAN 2017-2022 contributes to the attainment of the targets set by the Philippine Development Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Several parts make up the PPAN, which includes targets, directions, and priority actions to address wasting, stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and overweight and obesity.
Results from the National Nutrition Surveys of the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute show favorable figures for stunting in the recent years (33.4% in 2015 to 28.8% in 2019), and fluctuating prevalence for wasting (7.1% in 2015 to 5.8% in 2019) and overweight/obesity (3.9% in 2015 to 2.9% in 2019). To add, international reports indicate that Filipinos rank second among the shortest in the ASEAN region, 9th in the global stunting burden, and 10th in the global wasting burden.
