28 January 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – The Northern Mindanao Mentoring Initiative for Nutrition (NorMIN) Regional Shepherding Team (RST) jumpstarted the year by conducting Advocacy Meetings with Lanao del Norte Province and Iligan City on 26 and 28 January 2022, respectively.
The virtual meetings aimed to a) hold a one-hour dialogue with the local chief executives (LCE) and the local government units’ (LGU) key players on nutrition, b) present the Nutrition Shepherding Project, and c) secure approval of the LCE and the Local Nutrition Committee (LNC).
During both meetings, RST Chairperson Ms. Hazel P. Dondonayos, Valencia City Nutrition Action Officer led the discussion on the details of the project, followed by the nutrition situation and LNC functionality checklists of the two LGUs.

Mr. Jaime “Boo” M. Iman, Jr., a Barangay Nutrition Scholar from Brgy. Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City, was hailed as the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (ROBNS) for performance year 2019.
BNS Boo is one of the six (6) nutrition volunteers of Brgy. Pagatpat, with five (5) years of experience as a BNS under his belt. Despite having several co-BNSs in the barangay, BNS Boo was hands-on in coordinating with their Barangay Nutrition Committee to implement their Barangay Nutrition Action Plan.
In Zone 1 where he is assigned, there were no malnourished children recorded for 2019, which is one of the results of his efficient management and exemplary coordination of programs under the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition. Also, he is a steadfast enabler of nutrition-sensitive programs targeting the children and the youth, being a former youth leader. Below are some of his notable achievements and projects:

Get to know Region X’s Local Nutrition Action Officer (C/MNAO) of the Year for 2019!
Cagayan de Oro City’s Nenita Fuentes Rabe, RND, MPA, a full-time CNAO for five years leads the City Nutrition Office (CNO) for nutrition improvement in all 81 barangays.
The CNO’s vision is to have a well-nourished and healthy Kagay-anons, which corresponds to their mission, which is to sustain effective and efficient nutrition program management through active collaboration among stakeholders leading towards a nutritionally productive citizenry. Being the head of the city’s nutrition frontliners, CNAO Rabe is committed to making this vision come true.
As a nutrition mover despite having several barangays—both in urban and hinterland areas— CNAO Rabe supervises all Barangay Nutrition Committees (BNC) through her City Nutrition Program Coordinators (CNPC). Aside from mobilizing the barangays, she also makes sure that nutrition is included in the city LGU’s priority development plans through her active involvement in planning workshops and constant coordination with concerned offices. This ensures that the legislative and executive branches of the LGU have a common agenda in terms of programs to be implemented, and budget allocation for nutrition.

25 January 2022, Cagayan de Oro City- The National Nutrition Council (NNC) X through Provincial Nutrition Focal Point (PNFP) Lizelle L. Bete conducted another set of Advocacy Meetings for Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program (TK DSP) in Lanao del Norte Province.
Last 13 January, PNFP Bete paid a visit to the municipalities of Sapad and Nunungan, Lanao del Norte. Local Chief Executives (LCEs) and nutrition staff were present during the visit. Nutritionist Dietitian Deployment Project (NDDPs) Alzenjoan Icalina and Mitzilyn Brillo accompanied NNC X.
In Local Government Unit (LGU) Sapad, Mayor Paruk U. Asis expressed that the LGU will continually provide support to TK DSP implementation. During the dialogue, it was agreed that the LGU will implement the dry and wet feeding scheme; 1st month - dry, 2nd-6th month - wet on weekdays, dry on weekends. Relative to this, Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) Norisa Ibrahim responded that they will schedule a meeting together with NDDP Brillo and the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) of the recipient barangay to discuss plans and strategies on the upcoming implementation of the program. In addition, storage of the commodities will also be discussed during the meeting.

Officer-in-Charge Provincial Nutrition Action Officer (OIC-PNAO) Marichu G. Tijing of Misamis Occidental was hailed as the 2019 PNAO of the Year Region X during the 2021 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) held last 18 November 2021 at Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.
Patience, hard work, commitment, faith and compassion are the key factors that helped OIC-PNAO Tijing as she continuously strived for excellence in her work. Serving the Province of Misamis Occidental for eight (8) years as PNAO, she has been consistently driven and dedicated to improving the overall health and nutrition status of Misamisnons.
OIC-PNAO Tijing is hands-on in terms of coordinating with the Provincial Nutrition Committee (PNC), local government units (LGUs), and various stakeholders to support the nutrition program. With that passion in her heart, she fervently advocated and lobbied the nutrition programs to the Local Chief Executives (LCEs), Local Nutrition Committees (LNCs), and even external partners. To seek their support, she made sure to set an appointment with them to discuss nutrition, its relevance, and their roles in each nutrition program. She successfully formulated and mobilized the Provincial Lobby Team composed of members from critical provincial government offices to help sell the nutrition program during their area visits.

Years of perseverance, hard work and commitment yielded City Nutrition Program Coordinator (CNPC) Sherill Faith P. Española of Cagayan de Oro City, the 2019 Local Nutrition Program Coordinator of the Year Region X award. The award was turned over to CNPC Española during the 2021 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) held last 18 November 2021 at Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.
CNPC Española has been serving the City of Cagayan de Oro for five (5) years as CNPC. Over the years, CNPC Española had shown her desire, eagerness and keenness in her work. These core values led her to becoming the very first Outstanding Local Nutrition Program Coordinator in Northern Mindanao.
Driven with passion, enthusiasm and the continuous pursuit in improving the overall health and nutrition status of every Kagayanon, CNPC Española goes above and beyond what is expected of her as a public servant. This is evident in her various accomplishments in the implementation of the nutrition program, and the promotion of health and nutrition in both public and private sectors.
CNPC Española is the focal person for planning and policy-related concerns in the City Nutrition Office. As such, her expertise in program management led to the achievement of more than the targeted programs, projects and activities (PPA) in the City Nutrition Action Plan. She also served as facilitator to various activities such as trainings, lectures and advocacy meetings on nutrition-related programs, especially in her assigned barangays.
