The month of May celebrates National Hypertension Awareness Month in pursuant to Proclamation No. 1761 to urge different strategies for the prevention, treatment, and control of hypertension in the country. The theme for this year’s awareness is Know Your Numbers with a goal of increasing awareness on high blood pressure (BP) in all populations around the world.
General Santos City Health Office conducted lectures on hypertension for National Hypertension Awareness Month last May 5, 2021. This was held in the Baluan Covered Court of Barangay Baluan, General Santos City. A total of 30 hypertensive clients of the Rural Health Unit of Baluan attended the lecture event.

The World Thyroid day is observed every 25th day of May, which focuses on increasing awareness of thyroid health and educating about prevention and treatment of thyroid diseases. Thus, the Regional Bantay Asin task Force (RBATF) XII initiated to conduct World Thyroid Day Virtual Celebration via Zoom as part the RBATF’s promotion and advocacy activities.

In connection with the Hypertension Awareness Month celebrated in the month of May, 1062 DXKI-FEBC Radio featured the topic on trans fat in its Talakayan segment that is relevant to this month’s celebration.1062 DXKI-FEBC Radio invited the National Nutrition Council Region XII on further discussion of trans fat and its relation to health. Ms. Gladys Faye Cawayan Combatir from 1062 DXKI-FEBC Radio held a phone interview with PNC Kristine Charl Nadela from National Nutrition Council XII last May 21, 2021 for the discussion of trans fat. The interview was aired live at 8:40 in the morning and the discussion lasted for 30 minutes.
It was discussed in the interview that fat is important for the body, but like all nutrients, it causes negative effects in the body when consumed too much. She emphasized that the key in consumption is moderation. The effect of trans fat in the body was also explained - which increases low density lipoprotein (LDL) and decreases high density lipoprotein (HDL), causing cholesterol buildup in the arteries, and eventually leads to hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. She enumerated food sources of trans fat which need to be avoided and food sources of mono- and polyunsaturated fats as healthier fat sources, in moderate amounts.

SOCCSKSARGEN--- The National Nutrition Council thru its regional office NNC XII have distributed Mobile Anthropometric Tools in 20 LGUs in the region covering the two batches of Blended Learning Course for Nutrition in Emergencies and Information Management held last October-December 2020. To recall, Batch 1 LGUs were: Sarangani Province including municipalities of Malungon and Alabel, Tupi from South Cotabato Province, Libungan, Pigcawayan and Midsayap from Cotabato Province, two municipalities from Sultan Kudarat Province: Kalamansig and Esperanza, and Koranadal City. On the otherhand, Batch 2 were as follows: Cotabato Province and its three (3) municipalities, Tulunan, Arakan, Makilala; South Cotabato province and three of its municipalities from Tampakan, Polomolok, Sto. Niño and two municipalities from Sultan Kudarat Province, Lutayan and Sen. Ninoy Aquino.
