APRIL LEAH1

Breastmilk is no longer enough to meet a baby's nutritional requirements when he/she reaches the age of six (6) months. Complementary foods are therefore being introduced. Children who do not receive additional food to complement breast milk are more likely to lose weight and experience growth faltering during this crucial time.

The survey of Department of Science and Technology -Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) in 2015 says that the prevalence of stunting in the Philippines starts to increase from 6 months -1-year-old, this is due to improper and untimely introduction of complementary foods or limited knowledge on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) among caregivers.

APRIL TIN 1

As April comes in, so as the most awaited summer vacations. Although the hot dry season starts during the month of March up until the month of May, Filipinos traditionally schedule trips on the beach and engage in outdoor activities more when the month of April starts. With these changes in season and usual activities, there are some tips to maintain health and beat the summer heat.

The first thing to consider and should be of much consideration when booking a vacation trip is the risk of being infected by COVID-19 virus. As we are in the midst of the pandemic, it is discouraged to go out for leisure and unessential activities. If that vacation can’t be delayed any longer, be sure to practice safety protocols during your booked trip. Avoid crowded places and observe social distancing. Wear face masks, bring extra when staying overnight and make use of face shield when necessary. Always wash and sanitize your hands, most importantly before eating and as much as possible, avoid sharing food especially when people are not in the same household.
