In the Philippines, among the leading causes of deaths are related to the digestive tract, which includes among others, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, peptic ulcer disease, diarrhea and stomach cancer.

SOCCSKSARGEN—National Women’s month has been annually observed in the month of March pursuant to Proclamation No. 227, as a tribute and call for the advancements of gender equality and women empowerment. This year’s campaign, “Juana Laban sa Pandemya: Kaya!”, also highlights women’s participation while battling the on-going pandemic which posed both challenges and opportunities.
In light of the aforesaid, the Regional Gender and Development Committee XII have encouraged all member agencies, institutions and other government instrumentalities in the region to take part to this month-long celebration while ensuring proper health and safety protocols.

National Oral Health Month is celebrated every month of February in pursuant to the Presidential Proclamation No. 559 signed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2004. The purpose of the observance is to raise public understanding of the value of good oral health.
Oral health may have significant effect on an individual's life in ways that are frequently overlooked. According to Department of Health (DOH), Oral illness in the Philippines continues to be a serious public health problem. The two most common oral health disorders affecting Filipinos are Dental Caries (tooth decay) and Periodontal Diseases (gum diseases). Although tooth decay and gum disorders do not cause disability or death directly, but it can weaken bodily defenses and act as entryways to other diseases and infections.

As the saying goes, “prevention is better than cure”. The same saying is relevant now more than ever in this time of pandemic. While we are hoping for Covid-19 vaccine to arrive as soon as possible, it is not a bad idea to protect ourselves in the best way we can while waiting.
Many depend on the availability of medicines in the market to cure almost all illnesses we know. However, there are way more benefits when these illnesses are prevented. One very important measure is through proper nutrition. Although, some nutrients play a bigger role in one’s immunity than others.
Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, E, and D, zinc, iron, selenium, copper, folate, protein, EPA and DHA [1,2] are noted as important nutrients for an effective immune response to prevent infection and other illnesses wherein they specific roles in different stages of the body’s immune response [2]. These nutrients act as antioxidants which protect immune cells, produce and develop immune cells and prevent inflammation in the body [1].

SOUTH COTABATO-Consistent with the Department of Education’s (DepEd) 10-Point Agenda to establish and sustain partnerships with stakeholders and to provide support pertaining to the “New Normal” in education, the Schools Division of South Cotabato (SDOSC) conducted Stakeholders Forum and Partnership Appreciation Program at Viajera Dine & Café, Brgy. Morales, Koronadal City, South Cotabato on February 2, 2021.

With South Cotabato as one of the target areas of the launched Tutok Kainan Supplementation Program, 11 local government units (LGUs) of the province and General Santos City are to participate in the program. In the said area, target beneficiaries are stunted and wasted 6-23 months old children from different barangays.
Since the past month, the National Nutrition Council Region XII and South Cotabato Tutok Kainan Focal Person PNC Kristine Charl Nadela consistently coordinates with different LGUs from the province to schedule orientations and coordination meetings with the municipality/city nutrition committee (M/CNC) members and relevant LGU staff and to firm up plans for the program.
From February 16 to 24 2021, orientation and initial coordination in municipalities of Tampakan, Tupi, Tantangan, Polomolok, Lake Sebu, Sto. Niño, Norala, Banga, and cities of Koronadal and General Santos were made. Attendees of the events varied including (M/CNC) members, LGU staff, barangay officials and barangay nutrition scholars.
