Goiter Awareness Week is observed every fourth week of January by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 1188 signed on December 11, 2016 to increase cognizance on the prevention and control of goiters and other Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDDs). The Department of Health takes the lead on this nationwide observance.

The National Nutrition Council monitors and appraises the progress of the implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) at various levels. One of the tools used is the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) Pro. MELLPI Pro emphasizes assessment of LGU’s progress towards compliance to quality standard. The tool is also used to assess the performance of the local nutrition workers such as Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs), District/City Nutrition Program Coordinators (D/CNPCs) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs).

The liver is the heaviest and largest internal organ that has a multidimensional functions to keep our body functioning and healthy. It functions essentially for nutrition, digestion, immune system, blood clotting and energy storage. The liver being a silent hard worker is also susceptible to many diseases.
In the Philippines, viral hepatitis especially Hepatitis B affects millions of Filipinos every year. On the other hand, unhealthy lifestyles and certain conditions like prolonged excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, smoking and hepatitis can damage the liver which in the long run will end to liver cancer, one of the top causes of cancer deaths in the country.

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Cotabato Province, Jan. 16 (PIA)-- To be able to support vegetable and fruit growers in Kidapawan City and help them cope the adverse effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the city government continues to purchase their harvest and sell it at the Farmer’s Market near the City Hall.
City Mayor Joseph Evangelista said that farmers are among those heavily affected by the pandemic and the local government has initiated actions to assist them.

SOCCSKSARGEN---Last December 19, 2020, a total of 20 graduates were lauded by National Nutrition Council Region XII of the first ever 10 Kumainments Nutrition e-school via online. Highlight of the virtual activity was the presentation of graduates and awarding of certificates (completion and participation) to e-schoolers who have successfully participated the 12 sessions. Four e-schoolers were also recognized as Kumainment Honor Students as follows: Top 1-Marilou Lanoy from Koronadal City, Top 2-Jacenth De Leon from Baguio City, Top 3-Shanerisse Tamondong from La Trinidad, Benguet and Top 4-Prime Moleno from Koronadal City. All Kumainment Honor Students will receive tokens and certificate of recognition.

SOCCSKSARGEN—National Nutrition Council XII disseminates among LGUs the interim guidelines in preparation for the conduct of Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus along with the activities on Nutrition Screening, Growth Monitoring and Promotion (GMP) in the context of the on-going pandemic and other related disasters. As per this issuance, the above activities are still to be done during health facility visits, community outreach and if the situation allows, strict observance of infection prevention and control (IPC) measures.
