In times of emergency, mitigating hunger and malnutrition must be one of the priorities of every Local Nutrition Cluster (LNC) to avoid further nutritional consequences. Thus, equipping the LNC members on Nutrition in Emergency (NiE) is necessary. NiE protects the nutritional status of vulnerable groups affected by emergencies. 

SCIn efforts to support the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) in their role as front liners in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, the Provincial Government of South Cotabato provided family food packs, together with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 12, and hazard pays to all BNSs in the province.

South Cotabato Nutrition Officers (NOs) Angela Frugalidad and Liza Enamno, and Chief Administrative Officer III Earl Rey Madres processed and facilitated the distribution to all 359 BNSs of the province in 11 local government units (LGUs), including the component city, Koronadal. Two sets of family food packs for each BNS were provided during August of 2020 and hazard pays were released last October 2020. One sack of rice was also given to the Municipal Nutrition Office of each LGU serving as food allowance during emergency responses.

MARCH PROJECT ANAK

Project ANAK or “Accelerated Nutrient Advocacy for Kids” is a model delivery system for complementary feeding intervention aimed to improve the malnutrition problem among children six months to two years old.

In Sultan Kudarat Province, the municipalities of Columbio, Esperanza, Lambayong, Kalamansig, President Quirino and Senator Ninoy Aquino adopted and implemented the DOST-FNRI Project ANAK that focus on providing feeding intervention for 120 days with priority to those who are underweight, stunted and wasted 6-24 months children using the complementary food produced by DOST-FNRI Complementary Food Production Center established in SKSU, Isulan Campus, Sultan Kudarat. The six municipalities also targeted 24-35 months old malnourished children.

SOCCSKSARGEN- The Regional Development Council of Region XII chaired by General Santos City Mayor, Hon. Ronnel Rivera approved the Regional Social Development Committee (RDSC) Resolution No. 10 series of 2021, “Requesting Local Government Units to support the Implementation of the Interim Guidelines for the conduct of Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus in the Context of COVID-19 Pandemic and other related Disasters at the LGU level”.

The Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) are community-based volunteers who assist in the barangay deliver nutrition and related services. Hence, basic information related to the performance of BNS must be given for them to carry out their roles and responsibilities more effectively and efficiently.

The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Libungan in partnership with National Nutrition Council (NNC) XII successfully conducted a two-day BNS refresher course to the 23 BNSs of the Municipality of Libungan, held on March 9-10 at Public Market Function Hall, Libungan, Cotabato.

MARCH WORLD TB DAY

 

Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that most often affect the lungs but can also damage other parts of the body. It can spread through the air when an individual with TB of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, or talks. Symptoms may include bad cough that lasts 3 weeks or longer, weight loss, loss of appetite, coughing up blood or mucus, weakness or fatigue, fever or night sweats.

In Asia, Philippines had the highest TB incidence in 2019 with 554 cases per 100,000 people, according to World Health Organization (WHO) report. Roughly, TB caused 74 Filipinos to die every day and is among the top 10 causes of death in the country.
